300.80 MPH in 660 feet!!!!!! WOW!!!!
« on: September 26, 2023, 11:06:26 AM »
Mike Salinas drove his Top Fuel Dragster to the first wheel-driven speed over 300 miles per hour in an eighth of a mile. On a 1000-feet qualifying pass of 3.647 at 338.00 mph, Salinas clocked 300.80 mph in 2.936 seconds in the first 660 feet of the run . Full article at:

Wasn't very long ago I remember reading that a dragster could never obtain 200 in the quarter. The car would disintegrate if it happened.

in the late 1950ths [t was 150 mph,  two weeks later the Bussell bomb went 155.

  So much for engineers

I've always said they can't get there before they leave.,,,,maybe

Roger Huntington wrote an article in Rod  and Custom in 1952 saying the the fastest possible speed in the quarter was 166 mph. This was based on the assumption that the maximum coeffficient of friction between tire and track was 1, and also not considering the possibility of downforce. The funny thing is, Huntington was a really smart guy, and readers learned a lot from his articles.

After cars started going in the high 180-90s he claimed they couldn't go 200. Wrong

You just need a flux capacitor for that.

Yes. But in 1952 plenty of smart people didn't foresee the friction coefficient of later slicks on prepped tracks.

Or multi-stage clutches. Or computer driven fuel timing. It's a process.

Probably closer to 450 turns of the engine. Lots of clutch slip early. The engine will rev up to around 8,300 rpm.

Some decades before that, people believed that if you traveled faster than a certain speed (I think it was about 30 mph) in
an automobile, that you wouldn't be able to breathe.  This made no sense to me, because horses can run faster than that . . .
and, of course, so can cheetahs.

People running away from a cheetah can't breath (after it catches them) so they were correct.
