Folks,
Be aware that the move to the new server is happening starting today or tomorrow morning. That means that once I've grabbed the Forum database, posts done on the old server will not transfer over. To tell which machine you're looking at, go to the landracing.com home page, that will tell you. All should be shook out in a day or two.
Thanks for your patience,
Bob the Web Elf

Where will it tell us Bob? I don't see any indication right now.
Pete
-
Why not consolidate "Moving Now" and "Monday evening or Tuesday Morning"? Verrrrrry confusing and us ol' guys don't need that.
I still don't see where the indication is on the home page.
Pete
-
If it says "Please be aware that the entire website - landracing.com, the Forum, and all of the associated bits and pieces...", that's the old site.
If it says "This is the new site! ", it's the new one.
Sorry about the confusion, I can't do some important things, I have to get Dan the guy at the 'old' host to do them for me. He's being very helpful, but there is some coordination required, and even then we can't just flip a switch and make it happen.
This is still the current forum, and stuff posted now will be preserved and transferred over to the new site.
-
OK, 10:00 AM 12/27, this is the end of the forum with our old host. Any posts made after this time will not be transferred to the new site, even though the forum will still be up.
I'll post here again, when the new forum is functional, with a temporary address that will take you to the new site.

Test post

I appear to be herwe now. :-D I did have to log in on the new site. Wayno

Smilies and screen icons are showing as RED X's on my page
-
It appears that the avatars didn't move with everything else. The only one that shows for me is "tomsmp" and this is his first post so he probably registered after the move. Where the avatars normally show is a blue box with a white question mark.
Pete

Yep,,same here, but then again,,I've been trying to reach my target speed for 5 years,,this is LSR after all, it'll happen,,,

Hey! I am here! Or am I?
Anyway, Happy New Year!! Bob
-
The avatars are there, but the page can't find 'em. I've been beating my head against that for a week.
As I'm posting, I have all the smilies, let's see how they show in the post.
Oh, tomsmp is me, that's a test of the registration function. New avatars DO show up, and ones that are linked from an external site show too.
Onward,
Bob the Web Elf

Bobc, just so you know we're racers, so impatience comes with the territory. At the same time we do appreciate your effort and we do understand that there are problems involved in getting the results a person is looking for. Keep up the good work and the results will come! (We all work under that dillusion.) :-D :-D :-D
Oh oh, the spell check seems to have disappeared. :? :? :?
Pete
-
It's working here just a couple of things missing.
-
Hi, Glen. Maybe you're right now looking at the other "moving" thread, maybe not. But I just went to the new home page and clicked on Chat Line -- and sure enough it led me there. It took a minute or so to get going - and either that's the usual or it takes a while. But it did work.
-
Thanks for the feedback!
Spell check is on my todo list.
Chat line is just a link to a totally separate place, I'd guess just an internet glitch on the slowness.
-
Well, I realize I have spell check, it puts the squiggly line under words like "oughta". Yup, it works. Is that what you're missing?
-
 :-D
Smilies work, board looks normal
-
Aha! A quick poll, if you don't have smileys and lots of red X's for missing images, are you using IE? I'm in IE, and it's horrible. Firefox works fine.
:-o
-
seems to be working
-
ie works perfectly in Oregon.
I am having to sign in each time though (tried with "1 week" and "forever").
Mike
-
Well, the smilies and images were a problem of the settings being for "landracing.com", but the changes haven't propogated through the system yet, so the forum couldn't find 'em. I bet the spell check is the same. Let's see what happens tomorrow.
Thanks for all the feedback, that really helps. :-D :?

Works fine in IE, firefox and chrome, I see the avatars and smilies on the forum.

The propagation thing is kinda like a virus, it goes from machine to machine, looks like OR got hit early.
(I used to live in K Falls)
-
I see avatars for me (the Chevy PU) and Stratman59, but that's all. Do you see more than that?
-
Oops, 4-Barrel Mike too.
I'm getting excited here....
-
I just logged in directly using landracing.com only and it resolved to the new web site as it should.
I went over to the old bonneville photo thread and I did not see any avatars or any of the images, and got a 404 error when I clicked on an image link so it may still be trying to figure out where things are.
I tried shift reload once to see if that would pull up the images and avatars but no joy.
firefox 8.0.1 on a windows box.
I can also see the images in the gallery if I go out to the first page and click the gallery button.
Larry
-
Well the avatars that are showing up are external links, or (my) newly uploaded one.
The avatar problem is more than just a simple path problem, the image file names are encrypted in the database (why I don't know) and I'm thinking it's a de-cryption problem.
Onward through the fog....
-
just posting to see if I can see me............
hope you all had a great break
thanks for your efforts Bob.
Dr G
EDIT: yup!
-
Just an educated guess, but it appears that avatars only show up after that user has logged in to the new server.
Everyone that is active in this thread and the other move thread seems to have an avatar and occasional folks on other threads whom I assume have briefly logged in since the server move. The forum software may not be able to access the profile and avatar until the user has logged in once.

Can we get punctuation check and grammar check, too? (Or is that to, or two?) Your (you're?) the won to no.
-
My avatar still isn't coming through and I've drifted back and forth between the two sites.

Maybe it's the usual problem, hung up in Customs.

Avatar won't load yet - otherwise seems to be OK!

Don't you mean Grammer and cheque?
Their could be problems with that they're idea Stanley, however if we could get something to help people with there pronounciation that could help things hear were folk are talking to others on the other side of the whatever.......
-
What Woody said in reply #36.
This hasn't been too painful so far. Good work Guys!
Pete
-
I can get to the first page of posts on the forum, but my DOD computer won't let me go to 2nd...3rd....etc. page. It tells me that I'm trying to open a game. I will check on my home computer tonight after "work" it doesn't have the restrictions on it.
Smitty
-
Smitty, this morning I had a bit of a hassle getting the Forum to open, too. I got to the basic home page but couldn't go farther. So - I clicked the refresh button - and then everything was okay. Everybody -- remember to give the refresh button a click once or twice before you give up on any particular page.
We're getting there. . .
-
Hi Jon,
I still can't remain logged in as before.
Everything else seems OK except the avatar pic's
Keep up the good work
Neil
PS
IE8 on Win XP
-
Jon, are the forums going to be put back on the cover page???
-
I expect they'll show up there within a day or two. Bob tells us that the entire site is moving - and also tells us that some of the things take a while to get "propagated" throughout the internet.
I just checked here and they haven't shown up in the way up north country, either. Remember, of course, to try clicking the refresh button (whatever it's called on your 'puter) to see if there's a new page/screen available. Why the old one still shows is because the pages are sort of stored in the server near your home, so to speak, so things will load faster. So - when you go the home page, for instance, the server just gives you the old one that's stored there. By clicking the refresh button the server goes farther out into the internet to seek and find the page, and (we hope) that's where the new version is. Most of all this is automatic - but once in a while it works to give the button a click or two.
-
The question is, how many oblivious folks are still posting on the old server? :-o
Or is it shut off to new posts? Very quiet in here so I bet many have not changed the url in their favorites.
-
"have not changed the url in their favorites."
Whatever that is. All I know is that my machine goes here all by itself. ("Good little Mac, have some more steam.")
-
what's a server? i thought was the person who took my order at mickey d's
-
I'll bet that many can't remember their password for the no-longer automatic log-in.
Mike
-
And if you can't remember that password - we're in deep doo-doo. I can get to your registration page and even send you a copy -- but that doesn't show the p/w -- just the string of dots. It will show, however, the "secret question" or whatever it's called - that will let you access stuff that's otherwise inaccessible.
I hope you all remember and don't need help, though. And - Jon Amo might know of a way for me to resurrect your hidden password - but I've never learned it. I think he did show me once, maybe, but CRS has taken that (and many other things) away from me.
-
These things take time folks... have patience. DOD still thinks I'm playing games which is weird... you should see the games they do let me play... wow. Still no Avatar, but who wants to look at some crazy guy sitting on an Elephant anyway?
It will work out.
Smitty
-
FWIW, when I type in www.landracing.com in the address bar, it takes me to the normal home page. Clicking on "forum", I get redirected here, to the temporary onlinehome.us address.

Is the www.s394433980.onlinehome.us a temporary one? Will the DNS records change to refer to the new host IP address?
I guess we'll see if my avatar works, too.
Hmmm...no avatar. Waitaminit while I check a few things.
I'm back. I had to upload a new avatar picture file. Now it works.
-
That's my guess, but don't quote me on it: I keep losing the decimal point while trying to figure how many 5 1/4" floppies I'll need to back up my 3 gig HD.

If you do not remember your password, you will have to use the password retrieval link on the login page. The software does not allow the showing of the password, to the owner or even the user for that matter. You can only reset, login using the temp password and then change it to whatever you like. You should NOT email Mr. Wennerberg to do this, the software package allows you to do this VIA the login page. It would be the same process for him as for you.

Thursday morning status......
"Landracing.com" takes me to the new page. Be sure to 'refresh'. I think you all can forget about the "s..." URL, that was just temporary. The new page looks like the old one, but says "This is the new site".
The Forum link at the top was put back right after I uploaded and configured the forum database. Try a 'refresh', and if you don't have it let me know.
The avatars and forum attachments only got partially transferred from the old server, we're working on getting the other 10,000 (2+Gb) over.
The permanent-login option is on my list, I found out about it yesterday. So is the spell check (though with Firefox on my Windows machine, it works).
Thanks for your patience,
Bob
-
Spell check (such as it is - read my treatise on the topic "Spell Check"), is working in Skandia, Michigan.
-
Wow, I remembered my password.
-
Post to test spell check with IE/Windows nope nope, it don't work.
Jon has Safari - works
I have FireFox - works
On *my* IE, it doesn't.
Is there a theme here, or is somebody gonna pipe up with it working on IE? :-D
-
The fwog waces awound the twee.
I see no speelcheck in IE
-
While Jon may have Safari in his computer, he does not use it - ever. He has Firefox in his computer and uses it every time he's online.
-
Oh! Well, that's 2 for FF, -1 for IE, and Safari still at 0.
-
I never noticed your location before Bob. Does that mean you've been fighting the snow drifts that we don't have up here?
Pete
-
Not too bad, people with 4wd haven't had any trouble. I hit the elderly neighbors with my snowblower (well, not really, but you know what I mean) and another neighbor hit the roads with his (monster) loader. The highways are clear, and we're supposed to have low 50's tomorrow.
-
Pete,
Some time ago you asked for bigger photos of some of the avatars I've used. Here's one, taken on a trials-bike trip to SE Utah. As we say in trials, "Man, that's a biiiiig down!"
PS, I'm not really goofing, I'm trying for the 5th time to get the avatars and attachments downloaded, uncorrupted.
This is a test of the attachment function...
-
For some reason, with my IE, I can't see the 'attached' pics, unless I click on them- I just see the box with a red 'X'.
I can see the linked pics, like from photobucket, just fine.
Overall, the site seems to have hit the ground running!
EDIT: Hmmm, I can see the one you posted when I was typing, Bob! There are a lot in the build section that I can't see, though!
-
And it was worth the wait Bob. Awesome picture!

Living less then two hours from the Grand Canyon and many other great national parks in Utah it is some of the most beautiful country in the USA. Side trips when traveling to or from Bonneville are well worth while. Ask SSS about hyway 12.

The 'old' attachments and avatars are the ones I'm retrieving, that's why just the X's. New attachments and avatars work fine, as do linked pictures.
Here's another, doing maintenance on the rear end linkage. A bike like this runs about 160# ready to go....
-
Glen,
Hwy 12 is great, I try to go through there whenever I can, and have a semi-secret camping place just west of Escalante.
I also spent my Army time at Dugway, right near Bonneville....
Yeah, Utah's cool.
-
Ok, time to get back to work. But one more "test" :-D

IE works!!

"The highways are clear, and we're supposed to have low 50's tomorrow."
Thats good. I closed the door to the deck about an hour ago and turned on the a/c here in the Keys.

It should work with *new* avatars and attachments, :-D
but I bet you don't have spell check when posting. :-(

Spel checkist
Yup, got spell check here in the Upper Peninsula. Little dashed red lines under incorrectly-spelled words. Three of them in this post. Can you find all three without referring to your own spell checking system (well, other than your brain, that is)?
-
My extensive (well, sorta) research says that spell check is built into most browsers but IE. If spellcheck / spell check on IE was working before, but now isn't (which seems to be the case), there may be a plugin that got lost in the move.
-
PS, I changed some URL's, and it looks to me like the "Login-forever" function is working.

:-( :? :x
Folks, I apologize all over the place. I finally got a clean download of the 27,844 images that have been posted in the forum over the years (7th try). In my exuberance of uploading them (it's happening now, and will probably end early tomorrow morning) I blew away the images that have been posted on the new site in the last couple days.
My screwup.
There's no retrieving them, but I will change the forum rules so you can edit the posts you've made, and upload the files again (without having to re-post). Please wait until tomorrow, ok? I'll post here when the upload is done.
Again, I apologize....
-
Just anoooother test post.
-
Nothing to apologize for Bob, those things happen from time to time, when you are doing big data migrations.
If you have not done that sort of thing ----- you ain't doing much IT work!
If you are doing IT work you will sooner or later.
Thanks for all the hours you have invested in making this a painless cut over to the new server!
Larry
-
Thanks, hotrod!
-
BOB.....I sent you an Email about my problem getting on topic--looks like I managed to solve it given I am on here....sigh.......more computer courses are in my future....
-
PS, I changed some URL's, and it looks to me like the "Login-forever" function is working.
Yes it is and my avitar is back too. Still no spell check for me though. Will the "latest posts" area on the main page be coming back?
-
Bob, you're doing well! You've found the avatars too.
Blowing photos is easy. You learn the lesson and probably won't do it again. I do a lot of nature and landscape photography. I know I used to erase my card when I loaded a set of photos into the computer. At one point I blew away about 300 photos from an afternoon shoot and wasn't able to recover them. I now wait to format the card when it's back in the camera and the pics are safely entered in the computer and backed up.
Keep up the great work. This migration has been relatively smooth for the users.
Thank-You,
Pete
-

'Tis a good day... I was getting pretty nervous about all those forum attachments. Besides just getting the files, lots of the filenames are encrypted, so there could have been an issue with them being decrypted properly on the new server.
The IE spellcheck problem is on the list of things to check out.
The "Latest Posts" list on the LR home page is on the list too. It's a different plugin from before, and may be a bit different... we'll see.
If anyone notices an image that's missing, let me know.
Attachment test....
-
Thanks for the hard work Bob. Its getting there. Patients is a vertue.

Trials bike.... did I get it right? do I win access to the site for a year?

Yup, and you do win access for a whole year!

OK, All the Avatars are gone now. Is that good? How do I get them back? Computer stupid, yes? :?
Doug
-
Your profile had the option "Don't show avatars" checked, you can do that to speed things up, fewer images to load. I unchecked it, can you see them now?
-
Thanks, Bobc. Any ideas as to why my avatar still doesn't show? All the others are there, but not mine. Do I have to re-enter it? Sorry to be a pain.
Doug
-
From the home page when I go to "forums" I get this URL
http://www.landracing.com/forum/
If I then select "show unread posts" It changes to this one
http://www.s394433980.onlinehome.us/landracing/forum/index.php?action=unreadreplies
and it says no unread posts. If I look under recentposts there are some.
Refreshing is of no help.
-
Mine was the same. I used AdAware to kill off all of the minor spyware. All is well with "new" again.
Mike
-
That big messy URL was a workaround to get people straight to the new site before the 'landracing.com' name propagated through the internet system. I changed everything to how it should be, then found out that for some folks 'landracing.com' *still* didn't work. So I changed things back, and that's why there are 2 URL's in play. I should be able to set things right by now, I'll check with the folks that were having problems.
-
Avatars... Doug, I looked up your member number, then looked in the avatar files, and there isn't one. Why not upload it again, it's pretty easy.
Sorry,
Bob
-
Bob, I do not get any recent unread posts. Please reset me or tell me how to do it.
-
Hang on, the forum settings are still a bit in transition. A few folks can't use the "landracing.com" url yet, so I have some settings which will let them in, but a few things (I think 'unread posts' is one) aren't working at the moment because of that. Wait a day or 2 and I expect it'll be fixed.
Thanks,
Bob
-
Double click on unread posts , works for me.
-
Avatars... Doug, I looked up your member number, then looked in the avatar files, and there isn't one. Why not upload it again, it's pretty easy.
Sorry,
Bob
I have tried to upload my avatar about ten times on 3 different computers - no workie for me!
Otherwise working OK!
-
Woody,
Send me an email, bob@southmtpages.com, tell me just what happens when you try, I'll t-shoot it tonight.
-
Bob, I get logged out of the index page every time I leave the board. As soon as I click a sub forum I get logged back in. Then when I go home it recognizes me and logs me back in. This on 3 differnt computers in separate locations using IE.
-
Status: I just now straightened out the major settings, as it looks like everybody can use the "Landracing.com" url now, and get in. As I was changing them I had a bad time of getting logged out... see how your 'forever login' works now. I'm hoping making things harmonious, so to speak, will solve a lot of these little bugs. The login (at least) works on cookies, so if there are mixed url's being used, that might mess that up.
Spellcheck... a popular thing, it's on my todo list. Either get it working on IE, or put on an add-on which I've seen, but don't know details on.
So let's see what started working, and where the remaining problems are.
Thanks,
Bob
-
Bob, when I type a reply if I make a spelling error the red underline appears. It looks like the spell check is working, it's just the button and correcting area have disappeared.
Ain't technology great???
Pete
-
I've always (for years, that is) seen the red squiggly underline telling me that I've mis-spelled -- but I've never seen anything that would correct it. I thought that was up to me - the machine was just telling me where to look. That's how it is now. Where's this "button and correcting area"?
In the new system I'm having an interesting time logging in: I enter whatever it takes to get it ready to let me click "login" (what it takes has changed a few times in the past week, and was different just now from what it was a few hours ago), click to login -- and I get a blank page. I click the refresh button and get a quick drop down asking if I want it to "resend old data (or whatever that thing says) and I click "resend" and then everything comes up okay. Four clicks to log in - used to take two. I can live with it -- just reporting.
G'night. 13F right now, rising to 25 by 5AM. And don't forget, boys and girls, to look near Polaris (the north star to you Mopar fans) around 2.20AM to see the busiest meteorite shower of 'em all -- likely to be 80 - 100 meteors/hour for about one hour. Go to www.spaceweather.com to find the rest of this story:
"Watch the Quadrantids on a cold January night. The shower is expected to peak around 07:20 UT (02:20 am EST) on Wednesday morning, Jan. 4th."
-
The spell check button was always to the right of the preview button.
Boy Bob, bet your looking forward to a reduction in issues and a little time off.
Pete

In firefox (which has a built in spell check) you right click on the underlined word and it will bring up a pull down menu of choices you can select to replace the miss-spelled word. If the word really is correctly spelled, but just not included in the firefox default dictionary you can add the word to the dictionary on your system. (note this is capitalization specific, so if it is the first word of a sentence and capitalized the spell check will still show the lower case version as incorrect).
When in doubt regarding some obscure technical word, just do a search for the word in google and it will usually suggest the proper spelling as a search option.
Larry
-
Hey Larry, I just tried your method on the I-MAC and it worked like a charm. The suggested words were right at the top when I selected "Spelling and Grammar" with all the options below. Here Slim's had it all along and he didn't even know! Have fun with it Jon. You can even teach it new tricks.
Thanks Larry. It's always good when us older folks are able to learn new stuff. :-D :-D :-D
Pete
-
Glad it worked for you.
I am only a handful of years behind you, but I work with computers in my day job and you'd be surprised how often even professional IT guys have been doing things the hard way for years because the easy way to do it is not intuitively obvious (like for example to shut down a windows system you click on the "start" button).
The good news is the spell check works for you -- the bad news is it creates a new and sometimes interesting spell check induced typo problem when you accidentally click the wrong selection in the pull down list and you end up with a sentence that reads:
"sometimes interesting spell check induced typo problem when you automatically click the wrong selection"
:)
Larry

Thanks for fixing the "Show Unread Post" thingie.
DW

Okay, Larry - but before I can do what you suggest I've got to ask PJ what to do when you say to right-click. Apple mice don't have right or left click buttons - so, Peter -- what's the Apple way to do that?
And -- I've never had a spell check button to the right of the preview button - just post and preview. Still that way, too.
-
Perhaps this will help you out Jon.

I did look at the site -- but not for long enough. I'll go back. But there's still no spell check button on this here form. Maybe I'll post a photo and you can tell me where it should be. Ah -- I've got it, a screen shot. Here's what I'm seeing: (http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/Screenshot2012-01-04at94756PM.png)
Should there be a "spell check" button someplace there?

I haven't worried about it since Larry told me about the right click trick. I remember it being to the right of the other two buttons but then again, take my age into consideration!

This has been educational, like it or not! :-D
I didn't know about the drop-down either, just the squiggly lines. (Firefox)
I don't really know what to look for either, I never posted enough (before the upgrade) to know about a spell check button or anything like that.
I looked into an add-on, and found one that uses a different (commercial) server, and they evidently put ads up in payment for checking your words. A similar one is in Russia, that will spell check your English, Russian, Slovakian.... That's about it. I guess spell check is a complicated enough thing that it's not found in the (extensive) list of forum mods available.
The forum *does* have spell check built in, but it needs a particular library on the server, and I have a support ticket in to find out about that. I don't think they do.
======= Edit: They don't
Dr. Goggles, I just added "*-Tunes" to the list of banned words. :-D

Tapatalk needs reinstallation too.....

Tapatalk is working for me, just viewed unread posts, and posted this reply.

Hally-looya!
I guess that got transferred over, some things didn't.
I'll check that one off my list....
Many thanks for the feedback.

What little I know about a website has convinced me that you have had a period of sleeplessness and have probably lost weight.
Sometimes solving one problem brings another to light.
THANKS for all of your efforts and accomplishments.

Now I can't find the list of "Posts since my last visit section."
Am I just lost or has it moved on?

there is a tiny square on the right side of the page.
it is a plus or minus sign inside it.
click on that and it should come back.

If you've got a + you should click on it, that is. I guess if there's already a minus sign and you don't see the unread posts stuff -- you've got other issues, like maybe the folded-over cover of a magazine hanging off the top of the screen.
-
there is also a small square at the bottom of the forum homepage
at " info center " -- things change when you click on that, also.

I lost stuff a month and a half ago when the change over at lr.com happened.
my thumb must of crossed that part of the screen.
