Bonneville Salt Flats Discussion => World Finals 2021 => Topic started by: Seldom Seen Slim on September 24, 2021, 12:09:29 PM

I swear that a couple of weeks ago I set up a specific topic for Finals - but I probably didn't finish. Whatever, here it is.
NEWS: I won't be at Finals this time after all. I've got the tickets, the time off, all that stuff - and Nancy had brain surgery day-before-yesterday and gets home from the hospital Saturday. I was going to fly out Sunday. I thought and considered and weighed the options of going or staying at home - and came to the conclusion that giving ammunition to a divorce attorney was dumb.
I'll post more of the story in the Health and Welfare thread, but to summarise: She's okay.
-
Good to hear that Jon and a smart decision on your part, now you can sleep with BOTH eyes closed!!! :-D lol8
-
SSS, I hope Nancy's recovery is very sucessful.
-
Smart decision Jon.
Nancy wishing you a speedy recovery.

We arrived about 5PM and set up our pit... that means we staked out 2 small tarps and unloaded the stuff.
Inspection in the morning

I've seen reports, posts, and texts this morning, all reporting that it's windy and therefore everything is on hold. Anybody else got WF updates?
-
No change. 22 mph at the starting line and 31.5 at the end in the road.p
-
I believe they will call the race for the day. weather shows 18+ mph winds until late tonight
-
They called it about 3 o'clock. Supposed to be better tomorrow.

They are running this morning. My friend Chris was first off the line and right into impound!
-
Nice!!! Good luck everyone.
I see the Turbinator is there, but I guess no Speed Demon?

From White Goose Bar Racing
The #2111 WGBR Truck, driven by Keith Pedersen, in G/BFMMP had a great qualifying run this morning at 174.543mph. This is the fastest the truck has been with this engine. Very excited to be in impound and looking forward to the return run tomorrow morning.
From JBA Speed Shop running the E/GL
Just ran 245 mph on a 236 mph record at Bonneville with a 258 ci naturally aspirated engine. Dyno prep pays off!

have any of the EV cars ran yet?

Well not exactly... the qualifier is in the books... the record could be reset in the morning...
-
Stainless is correct. Although they qualified at 328MPH against Buckeye Bullet's 314MPH E3 National Record, they've still got to back it up. Plus, they'll have to add even more to exceed the Bullet's 341.264MPH FIA A-VIII-8 World Record for fastest EV that was set at the Shootout back in 2016. And even if they do, it wouldn't count as an official "World" record, as WF isn't an FIA-sanctioned/operated event. But go get that E3 record Team Vesco!

Would it be possible to get a list of qualifiers in impound? Really interested in the C/AIR guys.
Wish I could have gone but work is just over the top right now.
Thanks,
Chris
-
I think it got bumped another mile an hour to 212
-
From Team Vesco Racing ...
Eric Ritter gets it done! 316 mph today averaged with yesterday?s 328 mph for a 322 mph average speed! New E3 class record! Congrats Eric! Great job RevoltSystems!

For the sake of the discussion, the list of vehicles in impound - - - is two lists, first of all. The car inspectors and bike inspectors each list who's in impound and give those lists to Keith Pedersen. He's the guy that actually produces the list that I use in the announce trailer for return runs. Keith prepares the four-part list overnight and leaves it in my pigeon hole at the motel for me to get before I go to the salt. Good luck on getting one for yourself.
It's 4 parts - Long course and short (combined with short-short course) course cars and long course and short (combined) course bikes. That's why you can hear Ron and me shuffling through paper all the time (as we try to locate the correct sheet).

Why can't they get 'em posted that quickly at Speedweek, too?
Jeff in Boise
-
I'm anxious to see which class the Aardema lakester is running. Either E gas or C it should get a record.
-
According to the already-posted run info, it's running in "E".

"Why can't they get 'em posted that quickly at Speedweek, too?"
Jeff in Boise
Just maybe because they have one paid employee. And, Slim, you're lucky to have that list at SpeedWeek. It's probably not easily available later.
We must remember (as I've been told) . . . "The SCTA is an amateur-run organization -- and they prove it all the time." That has no bearing on them also being the best.
-
I think you're missing the point. The fact is that they got the results posted the day after the runs took place. It makes no difference if they have one paid employee or 1000. They did it. So, why can't they do the same at Speedweek?
Jeff in Boise
-
Maybe 'cause there's a whole lotta shitt to do with over 400 entries to do rather than informing non-paying non-participating folks with information they'd like to have (and they might have it if they'd paid to attend and/or observe).
One's always welcome to add to the volunteers if one would like to help in streamlining the event.
-
Yes, there certainly are more entries at Speedweek, so I suppose that does makes it tougher. And personally, I do both pay and volunteer. I would have been at WF now, but the doctors wouldn't let me delay my chemo/radiation treatments any longer - like I did for WoS, so I could work in Tech and Impound. I've also worked for SCTA/BNI in timing and as a course steward. I plan to be back working once again at Speedweek in 2022.

Any runs by Turbinator or Speed Demon?
-
The Turbinator ran 482 in mile 3 on a test run. That's about 20 mph faster than the mile 3 speed when the car did the 503 a few years back. I don't think it ran again today. I also don't think the Speed Demon was there, or, if it was, I missed hearing about it.
-
Turbinator ran 420 at the 3
-
I checked the email from which I copied the speed - and you're, I was wrong. Thanks for the correction.
-
So, is that 420 "at the 3" (from Mile 2 to Mile 3) or 420 in the 3rd timed mile (from Mile 4 to mile 5)?
Jeff in Boise
-
2 to 3 Jeff.

As I recall it was. I was busy walking on a cloud after running 189.593 in my Tank.

Looks like you'll need to enlarge your grin!

Woody, oddly enough, the changes I have made since 169 mph are aerodynamic.
Wayno
-
Forget the wide grin - that's more frontal area!
-
Now that the full results are posted, I see that Vesco's Little Giant ran against its own new E3 record and bumped it clear up to 353+MPH. That exceeds Buckeye Bullet's FIA record, so Team Vesco can add the laurels for fastest electric car to their many other records. Congratulations!

Forget the wide grin - that's more frontal area!
Well Woody I don't think that wide grin will disappear for a long while... Wayno is now in view of the record... from now on HP may be his best friend... we all know...
Lakester aero is all smoke and mirrors....
-
Nice write up on the 444 electric Little Giant. More details on the program changes from SW to WF etc.

I'm sure this is a dopey question but what is the difference between the "130 Club" and the "1st Mile" on a timing slip? Where are they measured?
-
Well, first of all, you'd only see "130 Club" on a timing slip from World of Speed rather than World Finals. The "130 Club" speed trap is a 132-foot long trap at the end of mile one (from 0 to 1, that is) on the USFRA's short course.
"First Mile", on the other hand is the first full mile-long speed trap. On the USFRA's (or SCTA_BNI's) short course, that would be from Mile 1 to Mile 2, as there's no timing light at Mile 0. After that comes the "Quarter", which is from Mile 2 to 2-1/4. Then comes the "Second Mile", which is from Mile 2 to Mile 3.
On the (five mile) long course, you have the quarter (2 to 2-1/4), then the "First Mile" (from 2 to 3), followed by the "Second Mile" (from 3 to 4), the "Last Mile" (4 to 5), and then "Exit Speed", which is the last 132 feet of the "Last Mile". There's no light at Mile 1 on the long course, but a "combo" course would have a light there.
Jeff in Boise
-
Thanks, Jeff. You've explained it clearly.
-
Sumthin' like dis? :?
-
The long course at all SCTA events have lights from the 1 to the 5. All speeds in each mile are on the timing slips.
-
Thanks, everyone. I was primarily asking about the "130 Club" and the "First Mile" since I could not find anything about them on the USFRA or SCTA websites.
-
About half way down the USFRA site's home page you'll find a section for the 130 and 150 Clubs (and other stuff, too).
-
That's true Jon, but nothing about the location of those two timing lights.
-
Neil,
The 130 MPH Club is set up to run from the start line to the 1 mile mark. The first timing light for the 130 is set right at the the mile survey mark. The timing trap is 132 feet in length and extends past the the mile mark for that distance. So the entrants are instructed to stay on the accelerator for the 132 feet past the mile board. I hope this helps clear things up.
Monte.
-
Thanks, Monte.
-
SSS, did you see what the new owner of my old #787 Studebaker went? He upped the AA/AGALT record to 287 MPH. Time slip shows 291 exit speed.
-
Hey Gary, does this look about right for your old car?
-
The math ain't rite???
-
Stan, we need a place to give you a thumbs up, like on Face Book. Like you said the math ain't rite, write, right or as Elmer Fudd would say white :|
