Wheel cover question

Moon discs vs Circle Racing Wheels Mud Covers:  Has anyone used the Circle Racing wheel covers?
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CRW-701020P/
They're about 2/3 the cost of Moon discs but they have a small hole in the center...since I know nothing about dirt track racing, I have no idea what it's for.

Since I got 4 Goodyear Front Runners yesterday, I guess I need to be thinking about wheels and wheel covers.  I probably don't need 'em for the 130 Club, but that's not the final target and I'd like to buy stuff as few times as possible.  Any input would be appreciated.  Btw, I'm running 15", 5 x 4 3/4" wheels.

Ray, I think those holes are for the axle to stick through on some dirt track cars.... or those are the mistakes that wore through when making a moon
You should call and have them measre the hole.  Maybe you can glue a silver dollar or a casino chip in it.

Many dirt track bead lock wheels have holes to attach discs. They have the large hole and the 2 for mounting the spring for the duez fasteners. You can get them also in plastic. Most of them are flat but I have seen them like the ones we normally use......JD

Okay, Ray, stop right there.

You've been peering through the lens too long, and you're missing the big picture.

Q. What is the single common element that distinguishes a land speed racing car from any other form of transportation?

A. Moon Discs.

You can take anything from a Rolls Royce Silver Ghost to a Smartcar, and the instant you put Moon Discs on it, people who don't even know this sport think "Bonneville".

Now I applaud your effort to think outside of the box, and we're all looking to save a few pennies here and there.  But Ray, you, above anyone else here on the forum - Ray, the Artist - Ray, the Photojournalist - Ray, the one guy who consistently captures excitement in motion with a keen eye for detail and a quick shutter finger - Ray, you're thinking of using something other than the REAL DEAL!?!?  :?

Okay, I looked at the picture, and they're close, but goshdarnitall, aesthetics and tradition demand the genuine article.

And if you go with the cheap-o's, I'll put buggers in the holes, and I mean it!

Okay, I'm standing down from my soapbox now . . .

Ray,

If you go to Speedway motors they have aluminum discs that are not moon eyes. I bought a set for the Z car. They have three small holes in them for mounting with screws but most people don't notice that. I made a simple Jig to weld the tabs on for dzus fastners if you want to borrow it that's fine. Bought all of the Dzus stuff there too. Make sure you buy the correct depth dzus and spings. If you want I can help show which ones to get.

If you have a pic of my car in 2009 thats what I had on it.

19.99 each

Ray --

One good thing about using the Moon discs and their jig -- if you damage one and need a replacement, the factory disc will fit.

I was thinking that I'd like to put Moon discs on the back of my bike for Bonneville (Build Diaries, BSA B50 APG), so the Summit Racing circle track discs with the hole in the center would not compromise the looks.  Then I saw this statement at the bottom of their ad:

"Nothing's worse than when you are on the track and mud gets packed into your racing wheels, which can really slow you down. Mud drag--who needs it?"

That would be a bummer at Bonneville.

Rule 7.B.10 says "No wheel discs are permitted". There is some allowance for a partially-covered front wheel, but the rear must stay open.

Okay -- as to stuff getting stuck to the inside of the wheel rim -- yes, it'll probably happen to you, but it's usually not that big a deal - that you need to take specific measures against it.  We've raced in many salt conditions, and even the worst salt hasn't been enough on rim to make us feel an out of balance condition while we're going down the course.  We carry with us - like many of the racers do - a "garden" type sprayer, full of water, to hose down the clumps and sprays of salt.  That works fine for us.

2011 wheel rule has been revised.

7.B.10 Wheels:
Wheels shall have a minimum nominal diameter of 15 in. except in the Sidecar and Streamliner classes. It is highly recommended that strict attention be paid to wheel alignment, wheel balance, spoke tension and tire run-out. Non-cross ventilated front wheels are not allowed except in the sidecar and streamliner classes if the wheel is fully enclosed by the body work. It is REQUIRED that front wheels be cross ventilated by an area equal to at least 25% of nominal rim circle area. Non-cross ventilated wheels rear wheels are allowed. No front wheel discs are permitted. Wheel disc may be installed on the rear wheel only, and must be installed in a secure , workmanship like manner. Installation methods will be closely scrutinized.

Thanks for the update, Scott.  I used my '10 rulebook -- but never thought to look at the list of updates and changes that are shown here on landracing.com.  So, then, Mr. Koncretekid -- yes, you may have a wheel disc on the rear.  Sorry for the cornfusion.
