After last year, I already packed the industrial-strength fly paper and a couple of Horror Fright electronic fly racquets in the truck.

My compliments to Mr. Lattin. That guy can drive a straight line! We all know how hard that is out there.

Ray, now I know why Pork Pie was complaining of the inhuman treatment he received at the hands of the folks in Taylorsville. Whatever -- yes, he's here. I'll take more photos, but right now I'm staying close to the pit to hand out toilet keys. :? :?
My vote for the build of the meet so far is the Stupedbaker Racing Team from Georgia. That coupe is very well done. It's shown in the photos above with the front end off for inspection. It must be a salt newcomer, I don't remember seeing it last year..

Ray, Pork Pie Hotrod, could someone post a pic from today on the salt...or more than one..?..
Joe
Ray...not to shabby...4 minutes from whining to results...
i know you all are busy...so i bit my tongue for 15 hrs from 0500 to 2000....
Joe :)
Hey fella's, loving the great coverage already and racing hasn't even started yet. I, like all of you, am looking forward to keeping myself glued to the computer all week to take in all of your first hand accounts of the action taking place out on the salt. That said, thank you very much to all involved, your tireless efforts are much appreciated.
Quick question, does anyone have any information on the "Flashpoint" streamliner? I've never heard of this car before, but just saw a few photo's of the car on Bangshift and the power plant in it looks pretty serious.
P.S. I'm looking forward to hearing how Damion Gardner runs in the "Green Demon" modified sprint car.
Yep, Slim, I saw the gendarmes at the Bend when I went thru about an hour before. If I was a conspirin' man, I'd say that there's a little bit of revenue enhancement in progress. But life's is what it is and I can only echo the suggestions of taking care when the "bears" are around...or even MIGHT be around.
The stop sign at the I-80 overpass going toward the truck stop is one place to take care....Mike Cook and I got busted on the same day a coupla years ago, I guess the cop saw that it was my birthday and only gave me a warning, but Cook got nailed.
Another place to take care is right across from Mike Crawford's auto parts store. An easy place to nail folks leavin Wendover in a hurry to get to the salt.
Meanwhile, here are a few photos from today:
The Vinson/Allison Corvette built by Rob Freyvogel...last year it ran in A/BGT, but Rob says it was virtually uncontrollable, even tho he got a red hat out of it. So this year it's running in A/BMS with some downforce changes added. Vinson tells me that they know all about the wide tire thing and that they have a set of "skinnies" but they wanna try the fat tires first. Could be interesting to be out around the 5 mile marker when he runs it.
The next 2 photos are of a Mustang being run by a couple of gents from the UK...they were telling a story about the Carrera Panamericana when I came to visit with 'em but their Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb (the oldest operational motorsport venue in the world) kinda gave 'em away as Brits. Nice chaps, I say. :)

Yea Ray don't run those wide tires we were only able to get a 280mph 21/4 and 294mph 1st mile time blowing before 3 mile trap in 2011. :-D A/blown GAS altered
Everyone should use skinneys :-D
We did have a 288 mph with a 279 exit speed in 1994 at World of speed when overdrive slipped, should have used those skinney tires and gone real fast
Yea you gota listen to the EXPERTS :-o

What is interesting about this whole debate is that the only car that has gone as fast in the first mile was the Leggit/Lindsay firebird that had skinny tires on it, but had twice the HP.
JL...just think how fast it might have gone on skinny tires...
joea...just think what ANY drag car with over 500hp would do with skinny tires on asphalt.
Hey.. been there and done that in 1958 when my brother and my blown Olds street roadster got sideways on me in the traps at San Luis Obispo drags at 121 mph from spinning the 6'' drag tires.
There has been a real fast Firebird with skinneys but the amount of weight used to hook up grossly overloaded
the weight rating of the tires. Something the SCTA/BNI looks the other way on.
Here's something else to think about Joe, that 294mph ist mile was an average, top speed was 318 when it blew
just at the end of the 3 mile and before entering the 4 with 2 more miles to go.
Yea listen to the EXPERTS

not a bad shakedown for Poteet and Main..440+ mph...320+ at the 2 1/4...just think if they had wide tires...:)....
Good day, Ray.
I'm at work and the "live" feed is not working. So, staying on step is important to me. Yes ME!! I NEED MY BONNEVILLE FIX!!! Thanks guys for posting the runs.

also can we get some pictures.

5656 Jerry strode in a Thunderbird, usually goes around 250-260. Cook record at 291. Spun just passed the 2 at 168. all is ok execpt for the timing lite at the 2. Course should be down for a while.

That is interesting for sure. Makes me think that maybe course condition makes more difference then anything else. The simple fact that 2x the power out accelerated wide tires on skinny tires says alot.... but at the same time you guys consistently accelerate fast but have a number of high speed spins under your belt. Seems like a car like yours would be a great test bed for comparing wide vs skinny on the same course under the same conditions but then one could argue car setup needs to change to work with the tires too..... :?

I had just tuned in on the live timing and heard him go down. It was a friend of mine Ralph Hudson on #3535. Keep us posted. THANX!
thanks for the tire report...:)...
in spite of feelings about old discussions..its pertinent to the situation at hand and may facilitate future forays
how about the solid tires (non-pneumatic) Poteet and Main said to trial this week....?...i know that subject has history here...
nonetheless its all interesting fodder at it relates to SW 2013 and seeking to go faster...
That sucks.. Is it other photographers too close or spectators in general? edit..... just saw your follow up post... That looks out of hand. Who can/will do something about that?
There's also been a few harsh words between photographers and people WAY too close to the cars as they launch...I'll post photos of that in a bit. Day 2 is barely started and tempers are already flaring.

Ray, please don't stop posting pics and reporting. You'll leave a needle in a vein that wont be refilled. Thanks so much for taking your time to post and reply.
To all other posters, thanks for the info, us newbies need the info to fuel our fires. We have 2 cars in the works right now and I cant believe how bad it is to have to just sit and listen and not be a part of it.
Thanks to all of the volunteers and the announcers, we are listening and appreciate it all.
And to the photogs out there, could someone get some pics of the 9913? Thanks!!
Wade
Ray, the 9913 is a super, swoopy Studebaker built by Johnson's Hot Rod Shop. Red in color and listed as running C/GCC. Made a turn out run yesterday.
Wade
Got a mssg from someone with Ralph Hudson. He's being treated for a big cut on his elbow, no broken bones.
Thank you so much to Ray, Slim and all the others for the pics and updates!!!!! You all rule!!!!!!
Audio feed is nice ....but...What I've done when the feed works is minimise the live feed page, then open the pre entry page from SCTA so I can floow by car numebr. STill doesn't cover all the info that would help us that don't know much. When the feed works I sure do enjoy it. Thanks to all connected with putting the event on and posting here.
I wish the announcers would say the make of car when it makes a run..
I know they try, but it is spotty.
Since the audience is not familiar with the names or car numbers, it would help.
Also, the SCTA results sheet need to have the car brand name too.

any sightings or word on Hooleys orange Studebaker ??? #974 AA/BGCC
Robby Cohn had a little "issue" when he had a flat spin...he found that a Monza's rear hatch doesn't quite work like NASCAR flaps...matter of fact, when the hatch gets lifted by the air whilst going backwards at speed, it seems to fold itself over and breaks the windshield. Not a good thing and Robby was kinda vocal about the whole deal. But they're gonna try to get all the bits back together and run it again the end of the meet.
Is there an updated entry list somewhere on the interweb? I can't find one one on the SCTA-BNI site is there one posted anywhere? I can't get the pre-entry list to link up on the SCTA site either. Any ideas?
.................^..................Like...we want Glen!
Stainless in the Amo Steele Streamliner qualified 246+ mph...its a start..:)...i see a AA license soming up soon..

Ray yer the man...!!!
audio is great to have...no...tremendous to have..priceless really, and beggars cant
be choosy...but...Ron C. is iconic...the other gentleman is trying..but not in the same zip
code with respect to covering land speed racing...too much emphasis on "color commentary" since
his knowledge base with lsr is blatantly lacking...it interferes with the flow of the coverage and who actually just ran and what they did.....im hopeful over time that will change...THANKFULLY
powers that be have Ron C. there with him...
I thank SCTA Ron C. and the other fine gentleman for putting in the effort...
thank goodness for Landracing and the tidbits of tech coverage Ray and ....well Ray mostly are providing...!!
Joe
In regards to the SCTA web site live audio broadcast I have coupe of comments, one Ron who has been doing the radio announcing does an excellent job for many years and knows our race cars and drivers, but the new guy Harold just does not have that background and says some to the silliest things on the air about BLM and other things, today I heard him say that on Wed. night the Bonneville 200 MPH club is having a banquet and all racers and spectators are welcome, just go to the Bonneville 200 MPH club booth and buy the tickets for $35 each, well if that true its news to me, I'm a member of the 200 MPH club and in the past if you wanted to attend the banquet a 200 MPH member would have to sponsor you and buy the tickets for you to attend and the banquet has limited setting too, so this news to me check out before Wed. Night , thanks for your time, Dave  PS, can we get Glen back to do the announcing!!!!!
Thanks for posting! I am back at work so you good folks keep me up to date when I'm on breaks or lunch. I listened to the live feed yesterday at home on Chrome. Worked great.
HEY Announcers you have an open mic! IF folks say something behind you we can hear what is said. So be careful and not let people behind you carry on conversations about how the BLM is screwed up and these new BLM reps are bureaucratic Acura holes. Ok, they may be Acura hats, but lets just keep that amoungest ourselves. lol
As my dear ole departed dad used to say "Don't discuss the obvious".
Keep up the good work!!
Last batch. Three new ones and a revision of one...I did it in sepia tones cuz it reminded me of what I might have seen in a magazine in the 50s or 60s.
Now I'm gonna go see if I can get some speed shots.
It seems that an exception could be made for Skip Hedrick's roll cage, especially if it has way more roll bars than the 4 point minimum.
Maybe you need a cattle prod for the starting line next year.
Chris
Ray The Rat or anyone else out there. Who is Gary Hart that is racing for time only???
Any pics of the othe side of the RZ 350, wondered what the blower looked like.

Fast Freddie on a test run, best mph was in the 230's on a short pass. Seems the rookie announcer doesn't know who Fred is and was quick to report speed. Didn't get all of the mile info.
Here are some speed shots done a little earlier...I've been runnin back and forth between the camera and the computer and it's takin longer than...well, it's just takin longer.

As I recall, there was a lot of pre-planning before Norris Anderson decided on what truck to build. He chose that Stude cuz it was slipperier than any other truck in that class...and 622" of Chevy big block doesn't hurt, either.
Speed Demon just ran...apparently with a motor/class change: D/BFS. He ran thru the 4 with an exit speed of 384. I dunno if he qualified or not.
Has anyone had the stream drop out. The stream has stopped more then once since i started listening this morning.
Hey, Ray, if you get a chance ask that fella what he did for oil to blower as I am building a 2 stroke with turbo too. Or get his contact info. TIA.
Ray...we need more please........ email me your mailing address and I will send a check...really...please post more and tell us people off the salt what's going on..
Amo, better get your band back together and get us some updates since you know all of the racers...history, records etc..
Glen, get on the mic and kick some azz!

Thank you everyone for the updates and the pictures! I am happy to hear that The chassis engineering car is there I was wondering if they made it. I also agree with you ray about the big red Camaro being a favorite. Any speeds from them?
I really hate to do this but I'm a new rider with a new bike. Ran out of time before speed week so the bike wasn't tested before I got here needless to say I have yet to run. I did get through tech though. Is there any chance anyone has a bike they would let me do a rookie run on? I know its a fairly tall favor to ask.

Interesting course conditions...Jon said its predominately smooth and hard not soft and damp...they were 232 middle mile yesterday with 246 last mile, today 246 in middle mile, then crash....Oh, sh*t!
Jon watched video....rolled at least 16 times...stainless seemed to think he stayed conscious throughout...cage intact, car completely totalled....many more details... ill hold back on for Jon and others to add as they see fit

Got a hold of ED said more spins today than in 15 yrs.
They were going to release Srainless after nothing more than an ECG and listen to lung sounds....he said "to hell you are...your going to do more tests...I have good insurance..." ... now getting CT scan...
I think the folks need to see pics of car... to understand the forces involved...and other factors from scene...not mentioned yet..
Group,
Have four LSR tires for sale, one currently detached from vehicle..... I asked Burkdoll if he brought his fiberglass repair kit.....
Thanks all whom have sent notes to us.
Jon
Group,
Stainless will be able to read all later, but he is OK. No broken bones that we know of, some scrapes and bruises, cage was still intact. Not released from hospital yet, waiting on results from cat scan etc. From the video I saw of the accident looks like a bunch of rolls. The car is gone.... Have four LSR tires for sale, one currently detached from vehicle..... I asked Burkdoll if he brought his fiberglass repair kit.....
More to come later.... Haven't release the car back to me yet that may be Wednesday before that happens.
Thanks all whom have sent notes to us.

I think he went about 173. They made a quick turn around from his first pass. I have not talked to them since they made the passes. Sumner was excited this morning and ready to drive.
As a side note I have heard that the car received an award from the veterans group the Wounded Warrior Project. This is very special to all of us who are a part of this car.

John
VERY cool award! How does one get involved with the WW project and their car? We are interested.
Thank you everyone for the updates and the pictures! I am happy to hear that The chassis engineering car is there I was wondering if they made it. I also agree with you ray about the big red Camaro being a favorite. Any speeds from them?
I sure wish I could provide speeds with the photos, but the way things work....well, I just don't have enough hands (not to mention feet, cars, cameras and computers) to shoot the photos, then edit 'em while listening to the officials' FM radio (I own a special handset for this) and at the same time, listen to the FM radio broadcast, sort out the wheat from the chaff and write down the speeds. One person can't do it. Then multiply that by 4 for the number of courses and...well, it's just overwhelming. To cover this event effectively, you need a minimum of 8 people; two for each course.
Other than that, it's a piece o' cake. LOL!
I'm outta here to head for the salt.
I would love to have the live feed going here at the shop but can't seem to get it to work. Any ideas?
Sumner just made his second license pass in the 974.
John
Sumner running it? Kool!

Holy cow! Haven't seen that car since Wilmington last year. What a wing! Also by the looks of it they went to turbo or centri blower?Sumner just made his second license pass in the 974.

I have no knowledge of this at all. My information was second hand. I am sure that in the near future we will find out more.

Bret Kepner, long course timing slips, actually it's course 1 and course 2 timing slips, have had 26 spins.
It is weird.
Course #1, our traditional "long course" has a long time between runs. Many fast cars have gone to course 2 to run.
Now anyone seems to run on course #1 that wants to. In the past the only cars that ran on the long course had to run
over 175 in the quarter mile lights. That isn't the case now. Maybe they can only go to the 3.
It's just strange.
Besides, its pretty mnad hot.

How did the Flat Cad guys do this morning? Did they back up yesterday's pass?
wow that is pretty! Twin engines?
Help I can't find it! I have been looking for something that would help me see what kind of car Stainless was driving before the crash. The pictures posted here after the crash don't give much clue as to what the car looked like before. Just curious as to how different parts for the car held up under those kinds of forces. Part of building a new car and wanting to learn and be safe. If you can help me with this I would appreciate it. Glad that he is OK and will return but it is sad the car is gone.

Yes. 2 386" Chevy Smallblocks. Since it was the virgin run, Lee Kennedy paced it as they pushed off. After both engines were making a little power, they shut it down; I figger that's as planned.
And there's always one photographer who selfishly spoils things for everybody else.
There will be until officials put ropes and designated areas for crew, spectators and photographers. Most organizations do that but it may take someone getting hurt before they take better control.
Great new Streamliner, 4 wheel drive? Are motors physically joined or independent like MT's Autolite car and Noel Black's?
Interesting course conditions...Jon said its predominately smooth and hard not soft and damp...they were 232 middle mile yesterday with 246 last mile, today 246 in middle mile, then crash....
Jon watched video....rolled at least 16 times...stainless seemed to think he stayed conscious throughout...cage intact, car completely totalled....many more details... ill hold back on for Jon and others to add as they see fit
OK now the fog is clearing. The crash photos are of Hotnuts car and now i am not sure if the Amo-Steele streamliner also crashed. I am thinking now that it did not. Is that correct? Thank you Ray for the great coverage and stories. You make the pain of not being there a little less intense. Hope I didn't accidently start a rumor that the streamliner crashed.

Ray, in ref to your post #442, The Treit & Davenport streamliner is built to run both motors coupled or both motors separate and with either RWD, FWD only, or 4WD.
This is possible because the rear motor is coupled to the rear end after passing thru a B&J 4spd transmission and belt drive gearbox which can/does transfer power to the "idler" power shaft that runs 25 feat +or- to a similar belt gear box that centers back up to the front differential.
The front motor faces forward (as does the rear motor) and sends power through its B&J 4spd trans to a third belt drive gearbox and ties into the power shaft.
The different configurations are accomplished by adding or removing gilmer (blower) belts and/or removing the rear drive shaft.
Incidently, Les Davenport built a throttle pedal which can feather either engine independently from the other simply by the driver rotating his ankle applying more foot pressure to either side of the pedal. It, like the rest of the car is amazing. Bob
Dang, I need to talk to these blown 2 stroke guys about oil pump for turbo!!!!! Anyone know them?

Maybe Ray could put together a pictorial representation of cars from each of the classes so he knows what he is talking about when he sees it?

I hate to say it, but the broadcast has really been a disappointment.... and I was on the salt... so I can't imagine how it was listening on the internet. They are getting better as the week goes on... and I'm all about continuous improvement... so I'll offer to donate one of my rule books so the new guy can learn to decipher the class designations and such. Maybe Ray could put together a pictorial representation of cars from each of the classes so he knows what he is talking about when he sees it?
I would suggest you stick more to the facts, like Glenn did... it worked for many years. A little color is nice, but there were countless times when we waited for hours to see a certain car... and the announcers didn't even know it ever went down the track because they were waxing nostalgic about something nobody cared about. I would also suggest that we aren't all able to decipher who car "444 something" is.... but we would all know what you were talking about if you told us that Jimmy Barton just went around at 260mph in Wayne Jesel's truck.
Also, maybe the new guy can keep the giggles, and tounge-in-cheek slurs to yourself... I don't personally have any less respect for a guy that builds a vintage engined motorcycle and races it for five years to reach 70mph, than I do for George Poteet. Maybe more, because that guy probably doesn't have millions of dollars to pay a full time crew like Goerge. And unless you have worked your arse off every night after work, passed on weekend fun and vacations, worn out your friends and family... and finally got that record you've been chasing... you have no idea what its like, and no right to opine on anyone's efforts on the salt. If you want respect, show some.
Just my $.02

Some news about the 3838 Corvette. They've sustained some drivetrain damage which results from (quoting Rob Freyvogel) "too much horsepower." It's still drivable for some licensing passes, but not for competition.
Ray do you know if the turbinator II is in line to make a pass today.

One regret I had from this weekend was not introducing myself to Ray and Freud at the Salt Talks Saturday. Have to remedy that next year. Thanks ray and freud for all you do.
A quick Stainless update.
Just talked to him. He's doing well at the hotel in Wendover. Plans to head back to Wichita in the morning with the remains of the race car in tow. Our plans haven't changed. I'll be towing the boxcar on the flatbed trailer, and he'll be towing my streamliner with his dually to attend the WOS. After that we'll be staying over and I'll be running my Vincent streamliner at the Mike Cook Shootout. They cut Stainless' fire suit off, so he'll be needing a fire suit as he plans to pilot the boxcar. He sounded in good spirits. Mentioned he had a black eye, and is a bit sore.

Had a great SpeedWeek, (although I did come home earlier than planned due to melted piston). I was a rookie this year although I have helped a friend in the past. Got nearly everything I had hoped to do accomplished. Got licensed up to AA, set a record albeit lower than my AA license would imply and had a great time. New car, new driver, new crew not a bad week.
Wanted to say Thanks to all who put on the event as well as all who helped us have a great week!
(edit. . . )No. Spectators can go no farther than the limit line at the end of the pits. After that the only people out in "no mans land" must have either a driver or crew arm band. Usually the pits are so long the limit line is about the 3 mile or a little less. Further, for your vehicle to go past the limit line it must have a Pit Sticker displayed in the windshield. The DMZ is patrolled and they look for that stuff. Now after all that being said . . . it all depends. Saturday and Sunday is a festering cluster of humanity and the DMZ is carefully watched. By Monday the event starts to thin out and by Tuesday all volunteers are getting tired. About that time it gets kind of "looser" out there and by Thursday there are so few people around nobody cares. All that is for the long course next to the pits. The other courses have less traffic (or people) and seem to have less patrol. However, with less people you also stand out easier. The best way is to volunteer and help somebody and buy your pit credentials.
i have one question when you are at the salt watching the racing are you allowed to watch the cars from any where on the course IE if you want to sit in your car down course say at the 2,3 or 4 mile and see the cars at speed is that ok.

Morning all!
I just got home, had to come home to go to work but had a good time all things considered.
I had a close up view of both the Johnny Hotnuts and the Amo-Steel incidents. Both drivers are very lucky that the safety equipment the SCTA insists on did its job.
So glad to hear Johnny and Stainless are ok, I was really worried when I saw the situations unfold.
I personally embargo all crash related pictures except for the car owners and the technical staff from the SCTA, those crash images have already been passed on to the SCTA for their evaluation.
The following picture of the Amo-Steel streamliner was taken almost exactly 2 seconds before the car got sideways.
From my vantage point viewing the car directly from the side I saw no hint of a problem right up until the last moment, it seemed to be running "hot straight and true" as the old navy guys used to say about a torpedo.
It happened very fast and stainless got the chute out as quickly as any human could be expected to react when things went south.
If you guys want copies of the crash images let me know by PM and I will get you full resolution images for your analysis.

It seems to have been awaited by every photographer left on the salt.
Whoops, there were more...
Finally under way and away from photogs but...
...there was this SCTA vehicle pacing it, so Dave Spangler did as planned, shut down around the 1 mile (wild guess.) But it ran and without any apparent problems.
According to the team's latest tweet (https://twitter.com/teamvesco (https://twitter.com/teamvesco))the car ran 235 mph. They're analyzing the data from their collection systems...let's hope it's good and they can make it back out this afternoon.
Hey 'person', your "PRESS" vest is on backward. Ray, THANKS for the pix, even though fools are getting in your way. I will get some coin headed your way after the HAMB DRAGS this weekend.

I hve an all day meeting tomorrow and will not be able ot log on...so here is my 2 cents.
SCTA Volunteers, although the event is not as good from my vantage point this year, it still took a lot of work to put it on, keep the racing on the salt and keep our teams safe. Thank you.
Announcers, I appreciate your effort. There are some good observations here to make your show more of what the LSR people seem to want. But I appreciate you doing your best. With all do respect, if I ever qualify for a record I will track down Glen where ever he is and offer to buy him the largest breakfast plate at the truck stop if he will record in my phone... "Mr. Reilly take it to impound." No offense but he is the icon.
Did anyone else lose the stream. It has been good all morning and just a little bit ago it went away and it says its offline. It was good all day yesterday with only 2 or 3 refreshes! Today I have had to refresh constantly starting around noon Utah time. There have been some very long breaks in commentary today and the silence appears to be a broken link which is not the case. I caught myself reaching for the refresh a couple of times but increased the sound to hear the background noise and it was still streaming.
Nice to finally meet you on the salt Jon, keep it straight up!

Whether you send it directly to him (I guess by mail, in a check form) or to landracing.com by using Paypal -- I'll see to it that what you mark as his portion gets to him. He has been working hard and deserves a good pat on the back - and one in the wallet - for the efforts.

(The Green Demon Sprint Car in Ray's photo above)
The Green Demon is Damion Gardner. T/O and he is trying to record 200mph which would become the world’s fastest sprint car. Licensing runs went fine but yesterday he spun near 200 . . . today same story. He says at the top end the front hooks a rut and then the rear hooks a different rut which starts the spin. I think it is the typical 410 SBC Sprint motor. One gear only with in-out box! Will try again tomorrow morning.
Nice professional video.

So they pumped alot of brine back onto the salt this year right? Is it possible that the "new" salt can seem really good but actually be less dense then salt that has been sitting there for thousands of years? Is there any sort of durometer for salt?
Sorry, T-Man I was making a subtle point. We have all stood on the line and heard a strong car with a 4-speed grunt and groan trying to pull away with LSR rear end ratios. Some never clean-out and shoot ducks for a mile before turning out. (5 & 6 speeds, with their very low starting gear don't seem to have the same problem). Think about it. If you use either 7,500 or 8,500 RPM, 200mph, and 28" Goodyears; Damion's rear gear is either a 3.10 or 3.54. That is a single high gear pull from 35 mph to 200 mph! That is not the same as a sprint car pull with 5.86s from 35 to 85mph. Maybe I'm easily impressed . . . I just thought his tuning and motor were interesting. One gear only with in-out box!
Uh, that's how they drive them things!
I think one of the issues is the way the salt cures from year to year and the drying conditions.Kind of my thoughts but way more in depth. I have some avalance study from college so your comment about the similarities between snow layers and salt layers makes sense to me.
This year as many recall on Thursday and Friday, there were lots of areas where there was a top layer of "stick to your shoes" salt that was in the process of drying but was still too wet to cement to the layers below. As it dried out it got harder and to casual examination it appeared to be good hard consolodated salt again but I suspect that in that top layer it needs time to cross bond between the salt crystals after it "appears" to be ready to race, before it really bonds to lower layers and forms a cohesive layer.
If that is the case it might behave similar to snow crust on top of a weak layer of snow and under high shear load (ie a car sliding) the weaker top layer breaks free sooner than you would expect and results in more tendency to spin for cars that are marginal.
Maybe it needs a bit more time to cure and cross bond especially on course #1 before we consider it "ready to race".
There is probably some research out there that would help figure out the proper drying conditions and time delays (much like curing concrete needs a period of time 28 days to cure to reach full strength after it sets -- I suspect the salt does too as it also is constructed of an interlocking matrix of crystals)
Maybe BNI needs to talk to some engineering schools and see if there are some bright graduate students who would be willing to do a paper or controlled studies of how to form a really firm hard racing surface after a late July or August wet down as we had this year?
It is common knowledge that the racing surface varies from year to year but why and how does that happen? Why in two apparently similar years you get different salt behavior and racing performance out of a surface that on casual inspection is ready to race on and hard and dry?

The Speed Demon gets down the course with no problem because of Downforce. That car has a bunch of it making it very stable. That equates to Drag that takes HP to overcome, which is why Mr. Dutwieler comes in.
that car looks pretty darn neutral to me..... i dont see where you see downforce...... Turbinator is #111 not #444

You see that big flat bottom that slopes up at the back of the car? At 400MPH what do you suppose the air pressure is there?
Turbinator DID make a run, looked very much like the previous run. I've gotta go turn in my vest and get home, so I'll post photos of it later. The 444 car is in the staging lane on course 2 now....no idea if either will make another run.
From Vesco's Twitter:
@teamvesco: #Turbinator 2 ran a second time at 247 mph. Hit a coursse marker causing minor body damage. Will work on fuel pressure issue for next meet

DeSotoman...the tire cop who wants US to stop talking but he can't.
Tom...before shootin your mouth off about wide tires only being rated to 300 mph. you shold have checked
closer on the specs of Goodyear Eagle Land Speed Tires. NONE are rated over 300.

The 2291 wide tires did not work very well for us. They did accelerate very good to about 220 then they became a bit evil to drive on. Put skinnys back on and had much better results.

I wonder if Speed Demon has got traction control figured out, 323 in the 21/4 :-o where other cars with wings and fast
speeds in the past can't get a decent time anywhere.

Also very anxious to see Turbinator run again, and yes I continue to be a strong proponent of real sidecars with real passengers. I appreciate the engineering that goes into some of the machinery that runs in the S/C class Speedweek but the dinky platform on a wheel on a stick is just not acceptable to this traditional sidecar racer. Thank goodness we are fortunate to have different venues where we can all exercise our passion for speed.

They get the power to the ground fast for sure, all incrementals are other worldly. It's a question of balance and technology. Downforce, traction control and a 7 speed Liberty Transmission is a big part of the quick acceleration. They have been working years to get it to come together and it's great to see them set records. There are several AA/FS now, each with a very different approach. Will be interesting to see how they do.

The 7 speeds might help them from falling out of power band [or whereever band they want] but it's not going to help acceleration if they blow the tires off. I suspect traction control.
We have to short shift the 222 car at a low power level less than 40% throttle and will still blow tires away in 3rd gear, full throttle only in high gear but still managed a 280 mph 21/4 time. 2011 only 40% throttle in high
gear before spinning on wet course. Started raining or had rained at the 3 mile on run. Chute was soaked when
picked up.
I know one reason Freddy D overgeared and short shifted his lakester was the tires would blow off. Not sure
but think he had 320 mph 21/4 also.
Looking into traction control for speed and safety.

Hammond spin photo sequence. Shot by a pals nephew, firstimer on the salt. He held his ground and kept shooting as all around him dove!

Way to stand his ground. Nice shots.
I think that was the 15 year old, newly minted car guys. Mark is trying to get them interested.
. . . I worked about 9 hours each day, and didn't have a clue as to what was transpiring. My car and bike shots are included with the SCTA results.
I hope someone finds them enjoyable.
A few comments . . .
I got back yesterday after taking about a 100 (finished) photos each day Saturday thru Wednesday. Each day they were supposed to be posted on the SCTA site. Some ran a little late. I was on all 4 courses, but it was impossible to include names and times and get them posted that night. Hopefully some racers will see their vehicle on the salt for the first time. This was my focus.
I've spent quite a bit of time today catching up with what happened. I'd try the FM for a few minutes between courses and then give up. I'd given the announcers my pre-entry sheets that I'd re-sorted in numerical order and posted the three-digit class record on each for their reference. I thought they did an okay job with this. But all the other unrelated comments were, in my opinion, not needed. It certainly is not required to be talking all the time, especially if you're not on subject.
I was one of the yellow-vested folk. Yes, once in a while, I'd get in someone's way, but it was by accident. Ron Jolliffe asked me over on #1 to herd the cats, but I really had no authority and courtesy was not even considered by quite a few. One time we were all lined up at 45º off the starting line, and one German fellow stood out by 20 feet from the line. I explained the principle to him, and he obligingly stepped back 1 foot. (No, it was not PP.)
All in all, I worked about 9 hours each day, and didn't have a clue as to what was transpiring. My car and bike shots are included with the SCTA results.
I hope someone finds them enjoyable.

Thanks for being there Porkie.
The odds are poor when the goal is a parachute shot.
You never know where it will happen.
Just look where Turbinator pulled his chute: before the 3.
Jonny Hot Stones didn't get to the normal chute release point either.
A lot of experience helps create luck but 'chute shots are always a gamble.
You captured documentation that was more important than the 'chute shot.
Ya done good.

Stoney Fritz....was cleared by trauma so to speak...cleared for surgery basically
tomorrow to plate the rib with multiple breaks, and a chest tube to help reinflate
the left lung....not sure yet if fx scapula will require surg repair....

Thanks alot Stan for the images...im wondered how all those great shots got in there each day..!! VERY much
enjoyed them....for without...much more would have been missed...!!!

First, as I said at the 200 mph Banquet....to all the racer's who had the bad luck that their racer went out of order, a great and fast recovering, and a happy birthday to Stainless and our Hotnuts who walked away after their scary crashes. And a special thank you to the SCTA/BNI for the today safety standards which make this possible.
About Stainless crash....I have heard from this video (done by the Hot Rod magazine) and so as they said on the radio...the video showed 17 "loops"....but I haven't seen the video.....Ray had mixed up my picture with the video
Anyway, I saw the crash from a other view...standing at the 5 1/2 mile, ready to make the parachute picture from Stainless and the streamliner....I just had got the racer in the focus at the 4 mile when he went out of control...
I need a moment to get him back in focus, but from there on I done picture of the crash.....and what I saw during framing the crash I can say it was one of the heaviest I have ever seen....
it is tough to make picture from a crash...but may be tougher when it is the car from your team.....in this moment you better stay cool and get the pics.....
about this picture....they went only to Jon Amo, as the co owner of the streamliner....and to the SCTA via Lee Kennedy.....this pics will never show up on any places....they are only for investigations of the incident and the reaction of the construction...
This picture are uninterested for the public....if the public like to see "sensations" they can view reality shows....but not this kind of picture.....this one are just for the safety issues....

Pork Pie:
Well said. People who spectate must learn that LSR is all about the journey regardless if the record you chase is 60 MPH or 600 MPH. If someone wants sensation or countless replays of a crash, well there are other venues they can consume to live out that fantasy Most people that dig the crash footage are people that don't have the will or stones to attempt anything bold.
Pork Pie and anyone else that refuse to distribute crash photos to anyone but the car owner and SCTA I say good for you.
My 2 cents.

Well Stainless is moving around, slow but moving. His swelling around his "coon" eyes has went down. Chin swelling down, still has dizzy spells when moving head too fast or side to side. He is still amazed he walked away without any major trauma, broken bones. He will be traveling back to Kansas today with his grandson driving the truck and trailer.
After all he is "Stainless", he will be working on the Bockscar to have it ready for WOS.
Thanks everybody

I assume this is not the LeSabre?
Just heard them talking about the American Iron Roadster class requiring a steel body..where is that requirement shown in the rule book?
One more note and not trying to be critical, but the 911 roadster ran 295 on a five mile pass Sun or Mon.
For the record:
Based on my count as they happened, the total number of spins throughout the week on all four courses was thirty-seven.

A dedicated lane for "motorcycles only" would resolve most of the track condition safety issues for the bikes. With 2 serious bike crashes this year, SCTA should seriously consider this option, especially considering the large number of bikes being entered in this event nowadays. There is a motorcycle only line. It's called Bubs
Simple solution!
There is a sure cure for salt fever, just let the Sheriffs oops I mean tech inspectors tell you how smart they are and how dumb you are. SURE CURE FOR YOUR FEVER! !!!!!!!

we heard more than a few teams had a bad taste in their mouths after tech. that's a bumber......
Chrome moly is good stuff and a skilled welder can make a nice and safe lightweight bike frame with it. One drawback is it needs the "skilled welder" and the tubes can break near the welds with no warning if the welding including before and after steps are not done right. Some of the Honda dirt bikes in the early 70's had chrome moly farmes. They looked great and we somehow managed to break them. Honda eventually figured out a solution. My fix was to ride a Yamaha. It had a frame made from higher strength mild steel and it never broke.
My experience is, for the average homeboy, he is better off using the more forgiving carbon steel for his work, and where light weight is critical, having something professionally welded from chrome moly is OK.

I'm with you Stan. While there are a few things like this that I might enjoy I don't have to know everything about what all my "friends" are doing. I don't like TV either and the trend to "reality shows" makes it even worse. Why do so many people feel that everything they do is interesting and the whole world should know about it?
Guess this is what happens after you reach a certain age!

BTW: I will be doing some engineering studies on the 1 1/2" vs 1 5/8" tubing so if any one has any questions or comments PM me over the next few weeks.
I was crewing on XsStress @ Bonneville '32 Ford so no time for posts. CW & CCW spins @ 217 and a final pass @ 233. Not bad for a little deuce coupe! :-o
I will put some pixs up later and will also be at BUB, WoS and Top Speed. Shoulda moved to Utah this year! :-D

Sounds like they are going to releases me from the hospital tomorrow  They pulled the drain tube from my lung, no more O2 needed and I am walking without a walker today. Thank you for the prayers and wishes. Looking forward to getting home. My understanding is that the bike is still in very good condition. Thanks again.

Glad to hear JH, Stainless and Stoney are on the mend. Thanks for the update guys.
Think I saw Stan a couple of times while I was at the Red Flame for breakfast and lunch. At least Im thinking a guy in a safari hat with a San Berdoo Roadsters patch on the front of it and a front license plate to match on his truck might be Stan :-)
Cant wait to go back next year although im sure the Wild Weasel will be done by then and Ill be busy doing between runs chores on it :-D

Mr. Therat --
Glad not to see my picture posted. We all accidentally get in the way once in a while, and some of us know the difference. I, too, was asked to help out. I didn't seem to muster the authority, and asked a starter for backup in one instance and was denied.
I thought of bringing a chalkline marker, preferably not white, next year, but was afraid the BLM would incarcerate me for salt contamination. I figured a 45º line would at least delineate the situation. We'll just wait and see . . .
On the last day of the meet I heard that someone blew the valve cover clean off the motor in his car at the line. If there had been some untrained and otherwise un-credentialed photographer (or worse, his/her kid) too close...well, I don't even wanna think of what could happen.

On the last day of the meet I heard that someone blew the valve cover clean off the motor in his car at the line. If there had been some untrained and otherwise un-credentialed photographer (or worse, his/her kid) too close...well, I don't even wanna think of what could happen.
Next time Ray; here's what you should do;
scream at them hysterically ... in German...like this:
http://youtu.be/PbcctWbC8Q0?t=3m22s
THAT will scare them away...fastlike... Guarantied.
.-)

Sorry Ray. My mistake; that comment was for PorkPie.
No offence, but I'm quite sure his German is better than yours.

I know enough German and body language to get the point. :) But yeah, PP speaks his native tongue much better than I do.
The temper tantrum in the video was pretty funny.
Photos from SW 2013 are on my web server: http://www.chevyasylum.com/lsr/bsf2013/01-sw/Welcome.html (http://www.chevyasylum.com/lsr/bsf2013/01-sw/Welcome.html)
There are 4 sections: Quick Pix, The rest, Bad Manners and Rods & Kustoms. The section names are pretty self explanatory, although I'll mention that the Bad Manners section was prompted by the abysmal shooting etiquette (lack thereof) at the starting lines, especially in the wake of HotRod (Larry)'s post here about the aforementioned subject. Simply put, it was a whore's nightmare. I'm gonna continue the rant in that Larry's thread, but you can see some pretty good examples here.
Hope you enjoy 'em,
