does anyone have any results from elmo today.
-
We will have to wait for the racers or spectators to chime in. Results may be up later tonight or tomorrow.

111 entries. Fastest time when I left was 238 with a Flathead Ford for power. As I remember 6 of the first 8 vehicles set records. F/STR record was upped quite a bit by Mariani Farms (sp). I don't think Noonan set a record on his first run, but it looked like you would be able to get at least 3 runs today if you wanted, and the weather held. I saw Kent Richies in motorcycle impound. Weather was perfect with a 5 mph tail wind while I was there.
Sorry I was too busy socializing, and that is all I remember.

Noonan did not set a record :-D ...I heard that also...course was not so good however it is what Mother Nature gave us..they did not get through the second round as the course was crap..still had a great time and ran a few great passes of 232.559 mph and then 235.395 mph after a few changes were made..

Tom,
Don't tease me like that, how much did Mariani up the F/STR record?
Jim
-
Jim,
I was surprised they were running F class. I wish I had good new for you but as I recall the announcer said they were running on a 151 record, and I think? he said they ran 167. I do know he said they really upped the record. Sorry, didn't you and your Son hold the record?
Tom
-
Tom,
Yes at 150.149 but they are only temporary anyway. I think it is neat we will have another car in our class. Do you know what they were running for a powerplant?
Jim

Jimmy Stevens Flathead went 238 to reset the XF/BFS record in Jack Costella's Streamliner, Rick Yacoucci once again at the controls. Not sure if they got Top Speed again, but I think so...................
-
Jim,
Don't know what type of motor. I did hear it from a distance and it sounded good.

Rick and I got top speed of the May and June events (car and bike) last meet he hurt the engine and still ran 229 to my 242, this event he ran 238 to my 235 however he got top time of the meet..
Congrats to Jack, Rick and their team.

John, congratulations once again! 235 with a "crap" course is great, so don't worry be happy. You are still the fastest bike rider at Elmo and might be for some time to come.

John did a great job based on conditions of the track. Congrats John for being the fastest bike again!
We ran starting position 65, and by that time, the coarse was already getting chewed up pretty bad. I hugged the right side cones and stayed there as long as I could. We turned 154.754 on my little 600cc bike, which is up just a smidge from last month.
By round 2, it was slushy snow under power. I backed off considerably just to make a safe pass. It was nasty from 1/4 way down to the end. I even washed the front a little just before the lights. Scary stuff, so best to slow down and just make a safe pass and go home.
Sunday AM was stellar for weather. It was nice to finally run in the morning for once.
Other great performances by all the clubs including Rod Riders with 6 record passes, SDRC with 3 records, GG with 2, Michelle Brading with Eliminators got 1, Rick Yacoucci and Super Fours got 1 with a 238.321MPH pass, and LSR and GoldCstRdsts also making record passes.
See you all in July !

Dennis Mariani ran a 168 using 1/2 of Chevy SB. Measured 180 ci in impound.

I was wrong there were 111 entries at El Mirage.
Here is a link to the results page.

Dan,
Is it one side like Russ Eyers or two and two like Fred Larsens. They are going to be tough to beat as they ran 198 at Bonneville with their E motor.

We set our record last month during Bonneville tune-up time. Let's see 84 MPH in 1.3 miles equals 323 at the 5.
New fuel injection either makes A WHOLE LOT more mid-range -- or the course was shittey -- or both.
Going slow makes for better pictures, too.
I've been told -- "Me doth think he protests too much."
And paraphrasing one of my favorite book titles by Vincent Bugliosi --"and the Salt Shall Tell".

One side like Eyre's.
They will be running four cars at Speedweek, pretty ambitious.
DW

And so far, pretty successful.

I just realized, that means we need a chute to run the lakes now. Oh well it's the drivers inheritance i'm spending.

Good Luck Jim on reattaining the record with a true engine vs. 1/2 of another one. I really never cared when this was done in special construction vehicles but didn't like it when I saw them filter down to the other classes in the late 70's. It will be tough for your Chevrolet 4 to compete against 1/2 of a V-8.
Jimmy Stevens has done the best and holds the record at Bonneville running 170. His Fontana block had a Ford Yates head and it took him a few years. Good Luck..JD
-
Wow JD! I never knew....... :-o
I seem to remember that the Novi took 2 set of Offy cylinders (well almost as Goosens did design them) & bolt them to a common crankcase to make a v-8.
Then there were those guys who defanged 1 cylinder to drop a class.
Also seem to me that the GMC 12 port is an unfair advantage with it's inlet port tilted up 45 degrees. :-D
This is only to start some lively debate as the forum is a bit slow lately.
-
Mike,
Whose GMC 12 port head is that? The Wayne GMC 12 port had straight ports, the Chevy head had the angled ports.
DW
-
You're right Dan (of course) it was the Chevy head that has the angled inlet.
Now, was that different than the factory Chevy 6 head? :-D
-
I have a couple of pics that were taken at El Mirage. I thought that I would post them here and hope that the subjects in the pics will see them.
A couple of the pics are for Kent(I owe you one). The others are for first timers and over the ponders. Hope that you enjoy them.

JD,
????????????? Sorry but I am confused. If you can put a late model V-8 head on a 4 cyllinder block, what is the difference? What am I missing? Wouldn't they put out the same HP?

The GMC head is a Howard. It was the only one with 45 degree intakes. It used the same injector as the Wayne. It is now the Arias and Harris runs one on his Camaro.
Tom, I know they are just air pumps but for years 1/2 motors seem to have an advantage. With todays knowledge and the advent of more SOHC and DOHC "F" engine classes are making a come back using all cylinders. Barry Kaplan could sure make a 1/2 engine run and I believe Freddy does pretty good too.
-
Duggan also made a slant intake head for a Chevy 6 in Australia.
-
The Howard/Arias 12 port head appears to be a clone of the Wayne GMC head except for the intake ports. I was told that Howard used the patterns for the Wayne and modified them for his version. Don't know how true that is. The Duggan head for the late model 292 type Chevy I believe is now the Sissel/Duggan and not a cross flow head. I had a Howard head on my 32 Ford/GNC and then sold it to the Salt Circus roadster.
-
I'm with Tom on that, I know that Udo and Jack are running real good with the Pontiac "Iron Duke", and that my Dad's engine (191 cid "Iron Duke" with a splayed valve small block head on it) hit 394 hp on the dyno, don't understand where the performance difference could be, unless instead of running the "pancake" crank like the four cylinder does (180 degrees), they are running a 90 degree crank like the V8's run. Is that where the difference is? The power pulses?

I agree, but those two run or ran, that weird yellow stuff that smells funny and makes my eyes burn. :-D

Mike,
OEM Chevy head had three straight intake ports.
Rich, it is my understanding that the Howard GMC head was designed by Howard Johansen using the Chevy angled ports. Not a use of the Wayne patterns.
Funny story from Nick Arias, he claims that a few years after Wayne Horning and my father split he asked Horning why didn't he design his GMC head with angled ports. Wayne's answer "too stupid".

Funny indeed, Kinda like Enzo saying aerodynamics were for people who can't build engines.
