I'm getting my stuff together for my rookie debut at ElMo in May and I think I have everything just about ready to go out and try to run for my first time! (I'm so exited) My question this time is boots, the rules state a leather boot at least 8" tall with buckles, velcro etc. I have some newer motocross boots I dont think are leather but like a plastic/composite type, will these pass tech? Or do they have to be all leather?
Thanks again guys, Lance

Probably they'll be okay -- but you'd be wise to ask one of the bike inspectors from EM for his opinion. The rulebook (and I think their website) lists the contact information for Van Butler and Tom Evans -- and they'd be the ones to give you a ruling that's reliable. Got a photo or the sales literature for them - showing the boots? Send it to them and let them see what you're talking about.
-
faded show up with ALL LEATHER boots --lace, buckle or zip at least 8 in. high trust me willie buchta
-
Thanks, Willie. You know the routine at El Mirage better than I -- so your input is valued more than should be mine.
-
ive been down that road --- here is the tech sheet ---the tech inspector will go everything on the sheet

Tech sheet does not specify Leather???? Also what if you are a one man band, I see equipment required for support CB Radio and fire equipment.
-
Items on both car and motorcycle tech sheets point to the appropriate rulebook section. If you require that everything on the tech sheet needs to mirror the rulebook we can print multi-page tech sheets.
Not rocket science here.

By golly, if the Rule Book says leather, what part of that is not understandable?
Yes, you need a support vehicle at El Mirage. I guess you could get away with pushing your bike everywhere, but with the leathers on, it might get old after a few miles.
-
I guess my question is.....can they be LEATHER motocross type boots, leather work, cowboy boots, or do they have to be DOT/SNEll??? approved type of boots?
-
page 109 7.C.3 BOOTS Zipper, buckle or lace-up leather boots of substantial construction are required and shall be at least 8 in high. a fire extinguisher and cb radio are required in your chase vehicle and you CAN NOT ride your bike or drive your car under power any where except down the race course. you should also read the the el mirage procedures

if you find dot/snell approved boots let me know....

in the left column of the tech sheet is the place to look in the rule book for the long version----be warned if you dont have the proper safety equipment you wont make it through tech ---your leathers will have to be ALL LEATHER also NO CLOTH PANELS---if they have perforation's i would fill those also---and i would recommend that your ALL LEATHER GLOVES cuff over your leathers ---remember tech is a safety inspection
what club do you belong to willie buchta

Well Stan Back and Willie I guess I will not come to Race as I cannot run bike and drive a support vehicle at same time. When I started this forum everyone seemed helpful and positive.I guess I was to excited to read thru the BS. I have sent pms to several people I thought to be very knowledgeable. Some that I sent pms to post on this forum almost daily. The majority never responded. I do not know why as I said they are on here almost daily. Guess my questions were to tough. To BAK, Pegleg and Nortonist592 Thanks for your replies all of which I found very helpful. My desire to complete my LSR racer has been blown up with negative treatment given. I have read rulebook many times and I apologise for not totally comprehending it.
-
WILLIE I DO NEED SOMETHING, If I bring my bike to the next meeting could you look it over as far as teching it? That way I will have a week to fix anything that might not pass?
-
would be glad to ---i think i have a tech sheet willie buchta

Debgeo, Wrong. Totally wrong. Come out and race. We'll get you back after a run or whatever is necessary. I have roped by-standers into driving my support vehicle many times (whether they wanted to or not). The rule book is written by only those who know what it says. The rest of us take wild eyed guesses as to what it means. But we show up and race anyway. I'll be at SpeedWeek this year. So I'll tow you back. No excuses. See ya there!
-
Debgeo, I think if you check you can ride your bike back at the BUB event at Bonneville. I believe all of the SCTA events require you to use a support vehicle. If I'm wrong, I'm sure there will be a correction shortly.

sssoooo back to my initial question if I have leather motocross type boots that are leather and taller than 8" w/ buckles I should be cool?
-
yes if you can wear a 10 i always have an extra pair of boots and gloves and helmet willie buchta
-
would be glad to ---i think i have a tech sheet willie buchta
LOL!! Will that be a Willietech or a Tomtech?
-
Okay -- I'm the bad guy.
"My question this time is boots, the rules state a leather boot . . . I have some newer motocross boots I dont think are leather but like a plastic/composite type, will these pass tech?"
This one answers itself -- and I think your club is lax in informing and mentoring rookies. You should have known about support vehicles at this stage. And as Emperor Norton says, anyone with any friends and/or club members never goes without support at the event. But it's nice to bring a friend along to help you -- you gotta get the bike there somehow.

Willie you wear a size 10 helmet, boots and gloves, wow your a big dude. :-D
-
stan back---our club the gear grinders just did away with the mentor program---the scta has stepped up the rookie orientation process to a 2 day event, the day before the race and the morning of the race--when you join a club you should get a rule book and the el mirage procedures--if you read section 1 and section 7 and the rules for your class ( motorcycles ) and read the el mirage procedures anyone should be able to show up at el mirage ,go through tech ,rookie orientation and not have a problem ---i have found that the inspectors want you to race and will help and so will most racers and like bill said we have volentered a spectator when necessary and they all said they had the time of there life hope to see you all in may willie buchta
-
just boots----actually i wear a 9 but 9 1/2 feel so good i just buy 10s willie buchta
-
debgeo.......good luck...
-
debgeo,,,,I'll be at either Willie & Sheri's pit. or the Old Crow Speed Shop pit.....with a completly empty tilting trailor at your disposal if ya need it. Just ask for The Arizona Old Crow (Crow is my last name) Don't get discouraged this early,,,,,,,or at all! come to Elmo and play with us, were nice guys! See you there? Crow.
-
Willie --
I know SCTA has stepped up to a better rookie orientation. But his guy coulda shown up with the same two problems that he might not be able to fix on-the-spot. I think the clubs have a greater duty than just collecting dues.

stan i have seen a few not make it through tech --the first (and only ) time for me was in may 07 my leathers had slits in the calf area with elastic--bob sights gave me a pair of welding gloves which i cut up and glued over the slits went back through tech and all was good----that was an easy fix compared to some ive seen---if anyone needs help come see sheri and i ,we camp just east of the tech trailer --look for the white mailbox willie buchta

STAN I think you got me confused w/ the other guy. I have a tow rig, my questions was on the boots?
-
Don't get discouraged because the bored folks here are looking for a little humor at anybody's expense.
If you can't get someone to help you give a shout out at the driver's meeting. I don't care what your problem is, 10 guys will step up to help you. Tow vehicle driver, tow vehicle, welder, spare parts, forgot to bring your drill . . .
If you need something after the driver's meeting just head up to the announcers trailer and they can give a shout over the PA and on the CB radio.
-
OK Debgeo, Dean's offer makes at least five guys who will give you a hand should you need it. See you in May?
