Mike, that was on his motorcycle.  Fastest-ever bike measured mile, I expect.

Freud, yes, they'll end qualifying runs at 4 and run the return runs following that.

I had to make a quick trip to town - headed back to the Salt right now.

That's a big jump in one mile 29.763 mph. I sure hope he can back it up.

I'll bet that he can back it up. He is conservative and even with that speed I don't think he is "hangin' it all out."

He is also most disciplined and I think, w/o being there, that he knew what speed he had achieved and shut  off before using the last mile.

With a little bit of luck and his dedication.........we could see one hellofa number on the return.

Looks like he made a good decision to trade vacation time with his coworker.

Keep your head down, JOE. Push your bellie button into that ding in the tank and keep it there. The quieter you can make it under that windscreen, the

faster you will go.

I'm back -- just talked with Junior (Cook) and the Shootout won't start 'til sunup Monday.
The 504 "Stinkin' Lincoln" -- the Hurricane Katrina car -- just grenaded a motor on the course.  First run of the meet for the car -- last run for them, too.

At Joe's pit in impound -- he's busy, but Stacey told me they'd found the tubing taking air from the intake on the front to the turbo -- was loose for the past few runs, so some of the ram air intended for the turbo has been blowing in Joe's face.  Joe discovered that while waiting in line for the last run just a little while ago -- fixed the tubing, reduced the body lift he was getting, and you all see the result.

He's chatting with Mike Cook.  Wonder if Mike will ask him to stay and run in the Shootout.

Yes, Mike would like him to run, and Joe would love to run -- to give Richard Assen some competition.  And I would have been happy to start raising the $10,000 that it'd take for the entry fee (That number comes from Cook himself -- might even be a bit low).

But Joe can't run an FIM meet with the bodywork he's got on the bike.  The tail is too long.  It runs under the new SCTA rules.  The old rules prevented the long tail -- and while those rules have been abandoned by SCTA-- they've been adopted by FIM.  So -- don't check your piggy bank to help Joe enter the Top Speed Shootout -- the FIM wouldn't let him run the way the bike is built, and Joe isn't about to chop off his tailsection.

I still don't have Fred's speed.  He's in impound as I said earlier, and so is the Blowfish and the Bockscar.  I'm going to be packing up our pit for a while but'll keep the 'puter running for updates.

Well - so much for starting return runs at 4PM.  It's 5.10 and we're about ready to start.  About ready -- but AM 1610 is still playing music, so not quite yet, hey?  I'm about done packing up the pit -- only the chairs and the tarp to go -- and will quit that in time for the runs so I can give you full attention and information.

First up is Joe Amo, running on that 272 qualifier and against his own record.  Needs a 230 to break the old record.

230.201 in the quarter, 251.314 in the mile, started smoking in the middle mile and ran a 229.207, turned in -- to the "I need help" side.

Fire reports that he and the bike are covered in oil -- but he's okay.  His speed was a mile or so shy of what he needed to back up that 272 qualifier (against his old record).  Joe's okay.

Dang -- a 251 in the first mile is pretty quick, too.  I guess we'll all wonder for a long time just how fast he might have gone.

I hear on the radio that his engine is scattered over the course.

As for return runs -- I think there are four or five more.  Fred Vance, the Blowfish, Bockscar, Clark/Hall/Leggitt, for sure.

Clark/Hall/Leggitt is at the line, warming the motor.  300 inch hemi -- on more than pump gas from the sound of it!

284.747 1/4 mile, 294.245 mile,  308.602 middle mile, shut down.   New record speed is 308.492

213.726 against 210 .109  Fred's new record.  I've got the individual split speeds -- don't have time to get 'em all typed.  Fred ran a 208.353 middle mile and shut down.

Bockscar running now.

204.865 quarter, 209.160 mile,  217.750 middle,  221.071 last mile.  About 221 new number on a 215 record.
