« Last post by Jack Gifford on May 25, 2024, 12:56:19 AM »At teardown the one-piece Viton rear main seal was melted onto the crank. It appears that the oil slinger behind the rear main was running against the rear face of its groove- as evidenced by discoloration of the groove face in the main cap. Apparently the heat of this interference, plus restriction of any oil getting to the seal, explains the melting. A possible explanation is that the align bore of the prior build neglected the appropriate machining of the slinger/seal area of the block and cap. .024" was milled off the bottom of the block prior to align bore, so the slinger/seal area should have been machined.
So... once again I'm stretching the limits of my little mill to machine the slinger groove correctly. I'm almost done with the block- by comparison the cap machining will be a piece of cake!
The seal groove appears to be correct, but I need to check it more closely.
