A couple years ago some guys brought a sled to Mike's Shootout and ran 200+ mph. Very cool deal! Curious, what rules safety or otherwise would it be classified in? I've had some guys asking me and I was curious...

The snowmobile was run under FIM regulations. The FIM has a rule book section which covers snowmobiles so it is a legal International class. Mike Cook's meet is the ONLY FIA/FIM event run on the salt. Not included in SCTA-BNI rules, so there is no class available. I doubt that one would be allowed as a Time Only vehicle.

I guess that rules my Bombardier out Hey?.

Nancy and I were there for this website -- but never did see a set of rules under which they ran. I remember that it was a factory team (I think I remember) and that the snobile (U P snowmobiler speak for snowmobile) ran in a fuel class - because of the little bit of nitro they had in the tank. I know that a bit of controversy arose because of their "apparent" qualification for the 200 MPH Club.
I do remember that they had a special track made for running on the salt -- and found that the stocker did better for them.

I thought we were hoping for warm weather and a dry track!

Jon and others,
When the run was being done and 200 MPH speeds were reached the 'controversy' was raised. As the 200 club representative on the salt I conferred with both the FIM and AMA reps present. We looked at the FIM rule book and found the vehicle to be in compliance with the regulations. The Bonneville 200 MPH Club does accept records by vehicles in both the FIA/FIM as well as those in legal SCTA-BNI classes.
There is a very long thread in the archives on the site. I bet 4 Barrel Mike could find it. He finds all the obscure threads.

I think years back someone ran a snowmobile engine in a lakester or liner, Burkdoll maybe ????
-
So what do we have to do to get it IN the SCTA rulebook? It already exists and the rules are already in play, plus it's more people to bring to the "Dark Side!
-
Just heard some other guys want to come out and play...

The vehicle: http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php/topic,6756.msg102148.html#msg102148 (http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php/topic,6756.msg102148.html#msg102148)
Dan's discussion (I think): http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php/topic,6822.0.html (http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php/topic,6822.0.html)
A quick search for "snowmobile" in the search box apparently shows a number of LSR vehicles have run/are running a snowmobile engine, however, YMMV.

Brad, sorry but you will not likely find a very easy time getting ANY new classes in the SCTA rule book. The simple reason is if you can't find a class to run in under our current structure then this might not be the organisation to run with. We have plenty of classes, we do not need more.
However active SCTA-BNI member can propose a new class to the SCTA in odd numbered years, i.e. 2017, 2019, 2021. See the page 1 of the SCTA rule book.
You can also do a search on this topic, there have been some very long threads on the subject. :dhorse:

OK, I shall relay the message...
-
The Bonneville 200 MPH Club is not a part of the SCTA.
The SCTA Rule Book covers only rules for vehicles to run at SCTA events.
The 200 Club salutes its members (including those that run at non-SCTA events) with a yearly insert in the SCTA SpeedWeek Program. This does not mean they are part of the SCTA.
-
Will the new snowmobile classes include vintage and sidecars?

Brad, refer them to the Cook Shootout... there are classes to run in and a venue. And if they go faster than the last one, probably a shot at the 2 Club.

You could contact BMST, FIM there too
-
FIM snowmobile record is 210ish. That may alter the thinking.

We currently are running a snowmobile engine in a Geo Metro. I purchased the car from the original owner, and I have owned/ ran the car since 2006.
There will be another entry this year at speed week in the I/GT class. He will also be running a snowmobile engine.
See you on the salt,
Clay

Not the same.

Clay, what brand of sports car also puts snowmobile engines in one of the autos? Or is your bud running in modified sports?

Let's see . . .
You can run a motorcycle engine in a car.
But you can't run a car engine in a motorcycle.
You can run a snowmobile engine in a car.
Can you run a car engine in a snowmobile race?

Back in the 1980's I built a M/C powered by a Can-Am snowmobile engine for LSR.....SCTA/BNI would not allow it to run .....time only.............still got it sitting here in the shop....should be very fast....................Oh, well........................................................................

This is a pic of Darrel Zipper's lakester that he ran in the early 2000s and it had a 440 cc snowmobile engine with the variable belt drive in it. I don't think it ever ran over 120 but it was sure neat. Carbon fiber body and the wheel covers were carbon fiber and he used the steel disc from a disc plow for the mold!! Would love to see this car with a GSXR of some size in it.

Easy mistake: Darrell Zipp of Zipper Motors http://zippermotors.com/?page_id=7 (http://zippermotors.com/?page_id=7) (ref 2nd para) :-D

Mike,
I stand corrected, thanks! Still a really neat lakester (although I am not a flat bottom fan) with what could be lots of potential.

Always love seeing Zipps lakester!

Would ECTA or LTA allow a snowmobile to run at Wilmington or Loring? I know snowmobiles are pretty common at dragstrips--would the machine's rear track hold up for a mile or a mile and a half of pavement?
