Title: GT class suspension
Post by: nickleone on August 27, 2010, 12:10:26 PM
I went to Bonneville for 2010. I was infected.
Question:  I do not see a suspension restriction in the GT class.
I have a MGB GT that could use some suspension.  Am I limited to MG suspension?

Ah, Nick - you and I have got to talk.

Are you talking front or rear?  I don't know about the front for sure.  The rear suspension rule was put into place so Vettes could run solid rear ends.  Slam the front end, stick a set of '75 Rubber Bumper MGB-GT springs on the back, and you've got a nice rake that should clear a 26" tire.

I wouldn't dismiss the rear suspension (or rear end) on an MGB.  They're tougher than they appear.  Plenty of Rover V-8's twisting through them, and if you can find a set of MGC automatic gears, you've got a fairly usable 3.08 diff.

Current front suspension is set up for WIRE wheels. To change to steel disc etc you need everything from the bearings out. Bigger brakes would also help.  I am not worried about the rear horspower wise but just for common bolt pattern and wheel sizes.  Postal jeeps have Dana rears that fit with only a spring mount change and come with a ford(?) 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern.  The Dana rear would alow for more gear options.

Thanks for the input.

Your problem might be your solution.

You're running GT, so you can run knockoffs.  Have your wheels built around the wire centers.  I've got spares, if you need them, and if you're REALLY SERIOUS about this, I'll send you a pair for the cost of shipping.  It's pretty straight forward to an experienced wheelsmith, and you'll be able to adjust your backspacing.  The Australian Healey team was running knockoffs at WOS last year.

OR

Wire wheels have been used in racing for years.  Go with some Healey BN7 wheels.  They're 15", 4.5" wide, and they fit on the MGB hubs.  I've got them on my '72.  Get some tubes and a set of frontrunners, and you're golden.
