I get news releases from BurlyBug frequently - and never thought that I should be posting them in their own thread. Since they likje running at World of Speed -- here's where I'll be filing them from now on.

Many folks have already acquired the new Wolfsburg West 'Okrasa' style heads and/or head and dual carb kits for their 36hp Challenge engine. Many new racers however may not be aware of the parts numbers available for the variations on the heads and kits that Wolfsburg West makes available and so I thought I would share the part numbers and descriptions with you in case this information would make ordering easier for your next 36hp engine project. I have also included Shauns email address at WW so you can contact him directly regarding any questions you may have about the items described below.

Friends of the Challenge
Three 'big deals' have recently occurred regarding this years racing in the 36hp Challenge that I will list below:
1st---RK Smith from HOT VW's has just announced in the April issue of the magazine that he has scheduled a visit to Bonneville this year to cover the 36hp Challenge and other VW's racing at the World of Speed event in September. Be sure to have your VW's looking great as they may get caught on film(O.K., on a digital card, but you know what I mean). In the past I have provided Bonneville coverage to HOT VW's and the 2010 year event's story should soon be included in a summer issue of the magazine. Having HVW's on site in 2011will mean better photography and more timely publication of your efforts and their interest is truly appreciated.

2nd---Weber 48 IDA(and IDM) Carburetors are now legal in the DSS36 categories of the 36hp Challenge. We have recently received confirmation by way of published reports showing these carburetors were available in 1964 on Shelby Cobra's making them pre-65 and legal to run in DSS. This should open up more carburetor possibilities for many DSS Challenge participants that have been unable to locate good performing components in the used market.

3rd--- Wolfsburg West has offered a $1000.00 contingency award to 36hp Challengers racing in the Bug, Ghia and Bus DSS (pre 65 dual carb) categories. To win this award, it is not necessary to use the complete Okrasa replica kit they now manufacture. You only have to run the WW dual port heads supplied in the kits and also sold separately. These heads can be modified and used with the aforementioned Weber 48 IDA carbs if you choose.

4th---The Australian version of Bonneville kicks off this years 36hp Challenge with as many as five or six 36hp entries participating. The DLRA Speedweek starts this week with Steve Muller and his Team Ratmuller Racing leading the charge with both big block and 36hp racers being assembled as we speak. In addition, Mark Holyoak will again return with his big block Super Beetle to make their Speedweek the biggest down under VW land speed event ever and coverage will be provided by VolksWagen Magazine Australia (VWMA). These mates from OZ will be great competitors to us above the equator folks so do not be surprised if some 36hp Challenge records get bumped up before the Maxton, Mojave, Texas, Maine and Bonneville events.

This year is already shaping up to be even better than 2010 when we had over 13 36hp Challengers on the salt along with another 11 VW air and water cooled racers. If you think you will be racing your 36hp Challenger at Bonneville in September or at any other venue around the world this year, please get in contact with me and supply both photos and details of your effort. As you know, I maintain a history of VW land speed racers and want to make sure your efforts are included.

I just got word from Colton at BC Autoworks that the 2010 World of Speed story in the May 2011 issue of Hot VW's magazine is just hitting the newstands now. Lots of land speed racing VW's, both 36hp and big block plus watercooled are featured.

Plus HVW's will be at Bonneville this September to cover the Volkswagen racers at the 2011 World of Speed. You are right, the salt is going to be a hot(VW's) spot this year.

Those VW's that expect to reach or exceed 115 miles per hour would benefit greatly from the installation of an original or replica Herrods Helper rear wing. They bolt onto the air intake grill below the rear window on bugs and increase high speed stability. And they are vintage period pieces so they look good too.
If you are running in the 36hp Challenge DSS, NA36 or K36 classes and have the potential to reach that speed, for safety reasons, this specific aerodynamic device will be allowed without penalty to your speed record.

What does "big block" mean in your circle?
SB, since starting the 36hp Challenge back in 05, we have referred to the 1961 and newer Volkswagen air cooled engines as 'Big Blocks'. They are the 1500cc and 1600cc stock engines as well as the 40hp 1200cc and later 1300cc engines which are essentially the same design of engine case and all the various cranks are 'bolt in'. These big blocks are unique in almost every way from a 36hp engine with almost no part interchangeability. The later Type 4 style engines which includes the 72 and later Type 2 and Porsche 914(and some mid-seventies 912's) are also big blocks but were never installed in Beetles, Ghias or Type 3's.
Since the 36hp engine never grew larger than 1192cc's from the factory, we felt the small block connotation was a fair description. Now we just have to educate the rest of the VW world to see it our way as most of the folks involved in Volkswagens today are from younger generations and have had no involvement or knowledge of the 36hp engine era. Like the Ford flathead and other 'X' category vintage LSR racers, most of today's folks have felt the small block 36hp engines were throwaway anchors, but like the perrenial flathead, are enjoying a revival of sorts in various forms of motorsports. In Australia, a group of land speed racers have taken the small block 36hp concept and created the 36hp Challenge Drags so they will have more venues in which to compete as well as the once a year event at Lake Gairdner.

I have a question guys, I need to sell and have had no luck getting rid of it. I have a 4 speed transmission off a 1963 Karmann Ghia. Only thing wrong with it is the 1st gear synchro is shot. Otherwise it runs beautifully. Anyone have a suggestion as to where I can sell this with any kind of luck?

Doc, the best location for selling anything Volkswagen is a site called www.thesamba.com . It is free to register and sell and in general can help you with anything to do with VW's. Ebay of course is another source as is Craigs List.
Good luck on finding the wounded tranny a new home.

Hi 36hp Challenge and big block VW racers, pit crew members and spectators
Septembers World of Speed and the BIG Volkswagen land speed racer gathering is getting close! Just a touch more than two months to go. If you are planning to join us this year, please email me back and let me know your plans. Will you be bringing a car and how is the project coming along or are you coming to spectate or help one of the racers? Please drop me an email with your plans so I will know to to keep an eye out and make sure to let you know of any last minute salt racing updates. As of now, Utah is experiencing good hot temps and the salt should be dry or close to dry as we speak. I expect the course to be every bit as good as last year and will be attending next months SCTA/BNI SpeedWeek event. When I return I should have definitive information on the race course and will let everyone know by email.
I am also excited about a couple of visitors who will be joining us on the salt whom most of you will be acquainted with but have probably not met in person. This will be a great opportunity to enjoy a little one on one with these folks who make our hobby possible. And remember, R.K. Smith from Hot VW's is planning on being on the salt with us to cover the event as well. It is gonna be fun!

Hot VW's magazine editor and photographer, R.K. Smith, will be coming to Utah this September to cover VW events at this years World of Speed being held on the Bonneville Salt Flats. The activities begin officially on Tuesday the 13th with VW racing beginning on Wednesday the 14th. Racing will continue through Saturday the 17th but most racing has concluded by Friday afternoon.

In addition to Hot VW's joining the VW Bonneville racers, a well known Samba moderator from Europe will be on the salt on Thursday and Friday as well as Tony Moore from Wolfsburg West, who will be joining the event to oversee the $1000.00 contingency award he has made available to 36hp Challenge racers running his new Okrasa style 36hp dual port heads.
If you can arrange to join us between Wednesday, Thursday or Friday (Sept 14th to 16th), please contact me for details and so we can put you on our mailing list to receive event updates. If you would like to put a club cruise together to motor out to Bonneville, that would even be better. Free camping without facilities is available at Roads Bend, just a couple of miles from the salt and limited rooms are still available in Wendover.
I hope many of you can join us on this first occasion of Hot VW's visit to Utah. At present, over thirty VW's have indicated they will be on the salt to race, including Big Block VW air cooleds(1600cc and above), watercooled VW's(up to 158 miles per hour-a radical turbo Golf) and 36hp VW's competing in the 36hp Challenge.

www.samba.com is one of the more successful automotive websites around and focus's only on VW's and Porshces. It was established early in the 'puter world and gained worldwide recognition within the VW/early Porsche(air cooled) world and has been a mainstay ever since. It has a massive parts/cars for sale section(like Ebay but free and without time restrictions), technical section along with many others segments. It is all free with financial support given strictly on a voluntary basis.
Even if you are not(or ever will be) a VW guy, the site is worth a look. The 36hp Challenge, while a small segment of the Land Speed Racing family has grown subtantially because of the Samba. The moderator oversees specific segments of the Samba to keep things in line and non-offensive.

VW Land Speed Racers
Great news for folks with Volkswagen air cooled powered racers has just been announced by the SCTA/BNI ( go to http://www.scta-bni.org ). Their "Classic" category of race cars that was previously open only to American cars built between 1948 and 1981 has been opened to include "Foreign Cars", and that means our Volkswagen's. The benefit for VW racers that comes from this change is our 1930's designed air cooled engines will no longer have to compete head to head for official land speed records set by radical watercooled Asian and European dual over head cam modern technology engines, most records of which are in the 200 mph plus range!
NOTE: This "DOES NOT" affect the 36hp Challenge and 130 Mile Per Hour Club record keeping that I maintain!
The tough part, only race VW's built to the demanding SCTA/BNI Rulebook can compete for these records which means much greater expense and serious effort is required to move to this level of competition. Any racer who is racing or building a VW they expect to exceed 135 miles per hour should seriously consider following the SCTA/BNI Rulebook safety requirements for two reasons. First and foremost, is safety! Speeds in this range involve much more serious consequences should something go wrong and Bugs "without wings" are extremely unsafe at these speeds (Ghias are much more stable and therefore better! And have better "aero"!). Second, building to the SCTA/BNI specs will allow you to race on the long three mile tracks at both the USFRA World of Speed at Bonneville and SCTA/BNI Bonneville Speedweek giving you greater opportunities for higher speeds and now with this change, potentially, SCTA/BNI land speed records.
I cannot speak for the USFRA or SCTA/BNI sanctioning bodies regarding safety and rules and the below interpretations are a simple overview of how I understand the rules as written. Therefore, I would strongly encourage you to obtain a 2012 Rulebook as soon as possible if your VW racing aspirations are in the 135 mile per hour plus range for now or the near future. This will insure you have information directly from the horses mouth before starting construction or improvements to your Volkswagen land speed race car. Questions can be answered by Mike Manghelli, the SCTA's resident VW racer and also SCTA Rules Co-ordinator directly at
rulebookinfo@scta-bni.org .
General Classic guidelines:
ALTered: Stock body and fenders (chopped O.K. if pre 1948)( Fiberglass replacements, i.e., one piece front ends O.K. if "stock" proportions and shapes remain). Removal of bumpers and front lights and covering of grill(s) and front openings "is required"! O.K. for front air dam, engine hood scoop and rear wing ( like a Herrods Helper or drag style ) mounted in the trunk area. Engine "MUST" be swapped for a non-original engine such as a Type 2/4 engine in place of a 1600cc VW type engine or a 1600cc VW in place of a 36hp engine.Supercharged or turbocharged is O.K. as a B blown( G gas or F fuel )ALT entrant. Air cooled VW's must add a rear engine support under the case. No belly pans or other streamlining!
GC-Gas Coupe(or Sedan): Stock body and fenders (no chopping). Stock bumpers required. OK for front air dam and engine air scoops. Rear wing if production (Herrods Helpers are probably NOT legal!). Any engine. Supercharged or turbocharged is O.K. as a B blown GC entrant. Only minor body trim alterations permitted. No one piece front ends.
PROduction: Stock body. Stock bumpers required. No scoops or wings/spoilers (no Herrods Helper!). Engine original to "that body style". No supercharging or turbocharging however bigger and multiple carbs ( if they fit onto original intake manifold bolt pattern! ) and most other engine modifications are legal!
Engines: No electrical fuel injection. No sensor management system's with loop. No dual distributors or magnetos.

F......engine size below 3000 cc's (1st F letter)
C.....Classic category(1948 to 1981 vehicle)
B.....Supercharged or turbocharged(Blown)
G.....Gasoline as fuel
F......All non gasoline fuels (2nd F letter)

If a Bonneville class is "Open" with no existing record, like the F/CPRO class, you can enter that class with a car that meets the engine displacement requirements (0.0L to 3.0L) and body, technical and fuel requirements and "establish" the base record for that class until someone goes faster than you.
All SCTA/BNI land speed records are set using the "average" of two runs. First, you must qualify by going faster than the record at which time you car is placed in "Impound" overnite until the next days early morning record runs. You make your second pass early in the morning and the speed from this run is averaged with the speed from your earlier "qualifying" pass. If the combined two pass average speed is above the existing record, you have set a new SCTA/BNI land speed record.
Each SCTA/BNI qualifying run at Bonneville in the classes Volkswagen air cooled racers qualify for are made on a three mile track instead of the one mile track we run in the 130 Mile Per Hour Club events at USFRA's World of Speed so your engine must maintain this high speed for a substantially longer period of time(build accordingly). VW's can run either at the USFRA World of Speed in September on the longer competition track west of the 130 track and set SCTA/BNI recognized records or they can attend the August SCTA/BNI Speedweek and race for records on one of two 3 mile competition tracks set up for cars running up to 175 miles per hour. Two way average records set on either three mile track become SCTA/BNI certified records. All cars racing on these three mile tracks must meet SCTA/BNI safety and class guidelines as set forth in the SCTA/BNI Rulebook. Details and rulebooks are available at http://www.scta-bni.org . Order the "2012 Rulebook" to receive details on the new Classic classes allowing "foreign cars" into this 1948-1981 category.
In addition. if you are building, or contemplating building, an SCTA/BNI certified racer to go after this type of land speed record, contact the SCTA through their web-site and you can be assigned a personal individual SCTA member who will guide you over the phone to meet and exceed the safety definitions in the Rulebook. These SCTA member "guides" are invaluable in reducing problems during your tech and safety inspection when you first arrive. Upon passing your initial tech inspection, your car will be issued a SCTA/BNI Inspection record book that documents the history of your inspections for future guidance. If you have any questions, you can contact, Mike Manghelli, the SCTA's resident VW racer and also SCTA Rules Co-ordinator directly at rulebookinfo@scta-bni.org .
Racing a 1200 to 1500cc ( 1.5L ) or 1600 to 2000cc ( 2.0L ) Volkswagen? At present, the new Classic classes do not have records available in those engine sizes so you have to compete with engines up to 3000cc ( 3.0L ) in the F class . Classes G (1.51L to 2.0L ) and H (1.1L to 1.5L ) will only be added after 2012 "if" cars show up to race in those engine size categories. The SCTA/BNI needs to see interest before any smaller engine categories will be included in future events.
This is super news for VW folks serious about going the extra miles(s) in land speed racing for the long term.

I just received this message from Walter (BeetSpeed) over in Belgium. They have been trying to find a sight to hold VW and 36hp Challenge land speed racing and have finally located a venue. Good news Burly! (I think/hope):
The organisation: http://www.straightliners-events.co.uk/events/
is holding 6 regular 'Topspeed tuesdays' (mostly for bikes though) in 2012 and upon contact with their main man, he lets me know that if there is enough interest, also a weekend day or full weekend could be arranged in 2013 for a 36hp Challenge to take place or combined with a regular event to take place in 2013, to be discussed. How cool is that!
Their 1 mile and 1.4 mile (!) track is located at a former airbase in Elvington, near York in the UK, England only 30 miles (40km) from the ferry that arrives from the main land in Hull!
They have a 101 dB static test sound limit, but that seems not too much of a problem for our cars if we know in advance (and now we do).
Think I will spread this possibility/opportunity a little further now and see how many serious racers for a european 36hp Challenge there really are.

The main goal is to find 50 plus "serious" folks who would commit to racing their VW, be it 36, watercooled or Big Block AC at one meet a year. INTRODUCTION:
A crew of four North Carolina craftsmen have been building the body, chassis and engine for what is a recreation of the most beautiful Volkswagen ever crafted, the infamous 1939 Volkswagen KDF Type 64 (aka Type 60K10) Berlin to Rome racer.

This very special project began almost three years ago and is now 80% complete. The chassis is rolling and the front and rear windows were recently fitted.
The car will compete in the 36hp Challenge Unlimited 36 category and the teams goal is to capture the fifty one year old record of Dick Beiths Pepco supercharged belly tank racer (aka lakester). Minimum speed goal is 130 miles per hour against the 51 year old record of 129.68 miles per hour.
Wolfsburg Wests Okrasa style heads will be part of the potent big bore 36hp engine being developed to meet and then exceed their goals. Our "1" Club hats are off to Bruce, Dave, Whitey and Elbert.
UPDATE:
It has been a couple of months since we first introduced the Type 64 project being crafted in North Carolina for the 36hp Challenge. Below are some new photos showing the progress to date. The world is watching as this team continues to create a very special reproduction of the 1938 Volkswagen Type 64.

The car is not going to run on the salt to protect the uncoated alloy body. The builder plans to leave it in a bare form so the craftsmanship required to construct the car will be visible. When finished (hopefully this year), the car will be raced on the pavement at the Wilmington, Ohio, ECTA events. The car will be brought to Bonneville for a September WOS Bonneville event when complete but only for display. The best we can hope for is that once there, salt fever will overcome any reservations they might have so we can all enjoy seeing the Type 64 heading down the long block line.

G'day Challengers
One of the most asked questions I get is what is the record for a stock bodied Volkswagen Beetle (Bug or Super)regardless of the type of VW engine powering it? Up until last week, the Hicks/Forlano Beetle was thought to be the fastest VW with a top speed of 132.100 miles per hour at El Mirage Dry Lake in California. Exciting new information came my way when I was able to talk with Mike Fischer who crewed for Dean Lowry on his last VW racer, a 1973 Super Beetle he too raced at El Mirage. On their first trip to the desert, the Lowry/Fischer VW (which would use a Herrod's Helper rear wing in all later runs!) went 133.062 miles per hour making it the new king of production bodied land speed racing Beetles. Mike by the way will soon be joining the VW Challenge with a beautiful new LSR Ghia! The photo below shows Deans Super Beetle at a event with a wing now attached that allowed him to reach over 141 miles per hour. Sadly, Dean passed away shortly after that final run without ever finding the true potential of the car.
Also below is a list of the "FAST 8" production bodied Beetles and surprisingly, Dean is also at the other end of that bracket with his 1966 Bonneville top speed in the EMPI Inch Pincher at 125.86 miles per hour.
Here is the list of the eight fastest production bodied land speed racing Beetles over the past five decades. Production bodied means no aerodynamic assists such as wings or spoilers to aid stability which becomes a huge problem when Beetles reach the 130 mile per hour range.

Creating a T64 from scratch is an expensive and time consuming process. Here is the latest photo from Bruce Cook and his crew showing the car is now resting on the chassis, windows and frames installed. Plans are to have the car ready to race in 2015 and take it to a ECTA meet in Ohio for preliminary test and tuning. And hopefully set a new 36hp Challenge Unlimited top speed record.

A crew of four North Carolina craftsmen have been building the body, chassis and engine for what is a recreation of the most beautiful Volkswagen ever crafted, the infamous 1939 Volkswagen KDF Type 64 (aka Type 60K10) Berlin to Rome racer.

This very special project began almost three years ago and is now 80% complete. The chassis is rolling and the front and rear windows were recently fitted.

The car will compete in the 36hp Challenge Unlimited 36 category and the teams goal is to capture the fifty one year old record of Dick Beiths Pepco supercharged belly tank racer (aka lakester). Minimum speed goal is 130 miles per hour against the 51 year old record of 129.68 miles per hour.

Below are two new photos of the T64 dash and engine compartment plus reposts of earlier photos that became deleted. Hopefully these will not disappear a second time! While you can see progress is being made, this will be the last update post for awhile.
The publicity this car has generated created a problem for the builders with too many interruptions from both media and curious observers calling and stopping by the shop(s) and it has seriously slowed their ability to spend time completing the T64 versus "talking about it"! Any further updates will be at the discretion of the builders and it is requested that all contact with them be deferred until after completion of this very special 36hp Challenge racer.

It has been awhile since the last update on the 36hp Challenge Type 64 recreation being built in North Carolina. The crew of Bruce Cook, Dave MIller, Whitey Worsham and Elbert Efird have been working vigorously behind the scenes to make this masterpiece come together so I thought I would post the latest photos they have shared. The doors and lids have been been assembled. The front lid and doors are hinged and latched.

The rear lid needs more attention to the fit, and it will be pinned and latched rather than hinged.

The difficult engineering and design issues have been solved, though I am certain that there will be refinements before the project is complete.

Yes, there is still a lot of work left, but I can see the completed body from here.
I’m still working on the taillight configuration, but I think I’ll stick with “snowflakes.” Fortunately, the taillights will be pretty simple to change around. It looks like each of the original T64's had three distinct and different configurations, so I figure a fourth would have also.
The rear 3/4 view shows the "snowflake" 55 to 57 taillight assemblies. I will describe them as "non T64" style to distinguish the clear definition between the Copacetic T64 vehicle(s) and the KDF originals.
I’ll let the engine and chassis guys update you on their progress.
