Heavy-Weight Multi-Engined Streamliner
« on: March 30, 2024, 07:50:08 PM »
I can't remember!!!

Does any one remember such a machine that showed up 20-30-40 years ago.  When they unloaded it, it sank into the salt.

Just out of curiosity, has any streamliner run a Rolls-Royce Merlin V12? Rather than run multi-engines, it offers a large displacement and a small frontal area. The air racing guys are doing some neat things with them.

I worked on the Herbert-Steen liner in the early 90's when we updated everything with the 7 speed B&J's, suspension & changed to fuel injection & it never got stuck in the soup at Bonneville.
I do remember Tom Burkland going long one time on a 400+ run & getting stuck down there, that's probably the incident you're thinking of.

I saw it run in 1998? Left black marks at the starting line.

Yes, true. I always wondered why those huge wheel humps were not faired in to decrease drag. It looked like a NY taxi with both doors open.
