Could not assess which part of the project Eric was referring to with the quote " We're doing something that's never been done before."

Along with the "use of driver gender" to gain ink in the press, I guess they have to rely upon exaggeration to galvanise Corporate America into funding the attempt.  And I thought LS Louise was on the Black Rock in 1998 when the Sound Barrier was broken by Andy?

Perhaps the only possibility is that they are the first to aim low at 800mph.  Didn't Thrust SSC put 850 mph as a target on some of their posters.

As to the drivimg skills - either gender might do well if they have been trained to operate in such stressful environments.  But the release seems to have that underlying theme of finding the US Dollars that are needed and the female market opens up whole new areas of potential.  Beauty products, jewellery and fashion sprung to mind.

I thought it was interesting until they said "bring sponsorship to the table". Fossett had a lot of money and I'm sure health insurance. If these guys were half way professional, they would be offering a salary to their lady driver up front. The sponsorship money would come later. These guys stand to make nothing for all their hard work until they get a driver. The cart doesn't come before the horse. Offer a woman 1 M upfront for risking her life whether she breaks the record or not. It's only then a qualified woman might appear.

At the projected speeds for the project, just what skills do you expect the driver will bring to the table or have time to use them ?
The systems required to fly that vehicle must be built into the design and not be dependant on any real time human intervention.
The skills of the driver will be best measured by the supporting sponser interest.

No, but I've got a couple of web pages -

Although I doubt if five fins are going to get you into a nice Liz Clairborne fire suit.

But we all want you to look your best during the interview . . . :-D

How about Britney Spears.  She has been in the fast lane for awhile and she might be able to come up with some cash.  And alittle flash.  She just needs alittle trainning on driving.  Brian #7796

I'll confess to having made wise cracks on this posting, but Jack D makes a great point here.  The driving skills necessary to ride this thing are about as useful to whoever gets the job as pilot skills were to John Glenn 1962 - they'll get you in the cockpit, but if you have to do something, it's probably too late.

A lot of Monkeys flew in space before they picked an "All Star."
One of my LSR drivers was a "monkey", and many of you know him. the others are quite highly skilled.

Yuri Gagarin was chosen because he was a staunch party hack.

He died by crashing by crashing what I've been told was one of the easiest aircraft ever to fly (MiG-15U) in final approach.
