burkland 411 studebaker
« on: January 06, 2005, 05:23:00 PM »
Saw a picture of this car. I think it was an A/GCC. Just wondering how long ago it ran. ( I'm new to Bonneville this year) I'm building one that has the identical chop on the top for B/BGCC and looking for a few pointers. Any info appreciated.

Do you mean the 2411?  A sharp-looking orange car, right?  Well, I was in line behind it at the fuel truck this past season and that sure looked like nitro they were putting in, so I'd be safe in saying that it ran in fuel class.  Don't remember the rest of the details about the car.  I've got a photo of it around here someplace - drop me a note if you don't find one elsewhere -- so I can confirm we're talking about the same car.

picture I saw on the web. was in a museum so i just figured it was an old car. It had Burkland on the roof i remember. I can't find the picture again. It would be really cool if that car is still running. It was orange with flames and about a 4" chop..

Send me an email addy and I'll forward my photo -- I found it in my Power Point and can send it -- but it's not posted on my site, so I can't attach it through this BB.

The 411 to Bonneville coupe still holds the B/BFCC record at 262+ set in 1985. Ron and Gail Tenansky(sp?) currently campaign the car at the salt.

If you want to talk to Betty and Gene Burkland, they will be at the Bonneville NW Banquet in Portland, Feb 19, 2005. They built the car and ran it until they built their 'liner.

The orange stude is the car Gene got into the 2 club in in 1978 A/FCC 255mph. After that they built another comp coupe out of a datsun B210. Tom got into the 2 club in the B210 in 1985 in the 295 mph range for B/BFCC (not bad for a B210). Bothe the stude and the B210 are still running at the salt. the stude is orange with green and blue flames. The same paint as when Gene ran it. If you see a 25' long B210 that is thats the one Tom ran. I do believe the Stude was at the museum in wendover for a while while the Burklands were running the Datsun.
Records or parts, I didn't come all this way not to break something.

I stand corrected. 1985 was too late for the Stude, of course the datsun B210 was in play at that time.

Looking at all the records in the rulebook, I think it would be neat to include what the car was in the listings..I had no idea a studebaker ever ran 255. I under stand that the record Tom Burkland holds from 85 was in the datsun car.
  really neat stuff...

In reply to ulrace 1-7-05, There was a Studie that ran in much excess of 255 back in the Middle 60's.At one point that car had ALL the Comp Coupe records except X that Geo. Vose had. The best top speed was a 298 mph pass and Freud even took an enlightening Photo at the 5 mile clocks of the left front wheel off the ground apx. 5", this speed was 298 and change. The first record we set had a return run of 272+ mph in 1966 in A/CC with a Blown Chrysler on Alky. This car is going to campainged again as we have a new Rear end that will hold the horsepower. Prior, every run over 285 cost a ring and pinion set with ALL the teeth gone! We now have a Scheafer/Eaton Quick change with a 1 to 1 ring and pinion. Good luck in your endevers with your car.

Ya but I'll bet your kid drives it.
It won't be traction systems, EFI,late model aero ,turbos, computers, or factory hot rods that do the ultimate deed.
Showing off for old man Freud with a wheelie in the lights is a little much, although playing to the stands does help build the crowd.
All in all, I guess the Stude has not been perfected yet. When can we expect to move on ?

ENJOY (Well at least He was smiling last time I saw Him)

Scott, It has been a very long time. The picture you put on the Landracing sight was taken in the downtown park in Ely circa 1966.I notice that the Top Fuel dragster numbers are still on the back door window from Lions Drags. I was thru Ely Three times this last year. You will have to give me your phone and address and I will stop when I travel thru to the Salt Flats in Wendover. This last year we got the 1350P/PP flying mile AMA record at the BUB Trials. The old coupe will run again, should be a lot of fun and thrills. Good hearing from you. Thanks Neil T.

JackD, It was a real treat to see you again at Bubs Meet. It was a long time since Sturges in '83 when I saw you at the Belle Fourche, So. Dakota Drags for Bike Week. How about the fuel Harleys of today, What a Ride they would be! Hope to see you soon. Neil T.
