Title: Motorcycle crash helmet specification
Post by: Buzz Lightbeer on August 23, 2011, 09:49:16 AM
Hi Folks, is an Arai crash helmet purchased over here in the UK with the UK certification stickers, legal for SCTA racing? Or do I need a USA purchased helmet with the US certification stickers on it?
Thanks
Buzz

It is if it's got a SNELL 2005 or 2010 tag inside, way back under the padding probably.  No SNELL certified within the last 10 years, no green light for running.

It will be at the motorcycle techs discretion, but they are reasonable.  My Suomy with DOT and BSI British Standard Rating instead of SNELL passed with no problems.

DOT stands for U.S. Department of Transport so it would pass tech!!

But, DOT and Snell specs are different.

Correct sorry about that just had a look and rule book states

All helmets require Snell foundation M2005 or later as of 1st January 2011

As it is written so shall it be.

Not what I wanted to hear really:-(, can't beleive an ARAI crash helmet will not be accepted by the SCTA.

all it takes is for them to Snell test it---I looked at one for $1775. US  went with a  $249.00 with the SNELL Stickers and it will get in the old car, with the Hybrid Pro--several new ones would not.

to confirm that the helmet has been certified by Snell -- go to the site -- www.snellfoundation.org -- and look for the brand and model helmet in which you're interested.  If you find it there -- and the helmet you have does NOT have the sticker -- unm, I'd ask the vendor where you got the helmet about the freshness of the helmet.  Maybe they're trying to sell one that's out of date.

Hi Jon,
It's more the other way round.
SNELL is not recognised in Europe, we have a different classification system over here.

If we want to do any form of racing we have to have an EC conforming helmet, with the appropriate sticker from your governing race body (in UK its the ACU (Auto Cycle Union))

Hope this clears the mud a bit :-D

You can request a waiver from the rules committee for clarification

my trailer tires pass DOT. Should I put them on the race car? Different purpose, different standards

If you want too!

as long as they aint too old and have the correct speed rating!

are they the right size?

are your old ones worn out?

thought we were talking about helmets bet the one you wear in the car has a snell 2005 or later but before 2011 it may have had DOT certification.

When I ride my street bike I have a DOT helmet i wear. No Snell sticker.  Makes me feel good and makes the nannies happy. Locally Snell helmets are easy to find. So in order to complie with the SCTA rules, at Bonneville I wear a Snell approved helmet. It has the speed rating required. As do my trailer tires, for my trailer. But DOT has nothing to do with LSR. They don't want to. And I'm glad. I once called the NTASC section of DOT in DC and got a TV spot removed. Featuring Paul Numan. Produced with Disney studios. Because it was inaccurate. What a bunch of sissy's If I can back them down. In this case I chose to trust the SCTA.

Sorry old chap dont understand your banter
Top hole. Bally Jerry pranged his kite right in the how's your father. Hairy blighter, dicky-birdied, feathered back on his Sammy, took a waspy, flipped over on his Betty Harper's and caught his can in the Bertie.

Its going to be snell rated though really...... aint it

I have raced three times at Speed Week, and only had trouble with my Arai in 2000. Even then, the tech guys saw sense when I pointed out that Roberts, Doohan, Rainey et al all used them in Grand Prix. The last twice they just recognised that my Shoei was UK, in date and ACU approved and passed it. The ACU racing spec is higher than Snell. Nuff said.

Thanks Guttley thats what I thought, but its a long way to go to fail Tech Inspection :-(.
I will email the necessary people to get confirmation that I can use my Arai next year, cant wait to get back on the salt again :-D

Ask the tech guys to add the FIM/ACU spec to the rulebook. We had the FIA spec added to the car side for 2011.
