El Mirage 200 MPH Club Report May 2007

The first meet of the year was greeted with high winds and cold temps during Friday inspection, typical of the high desert this time of the year.

Racing began Saturday morning and a large first meet turnout of racers was greeted to more winds and brisk morning temps. This didn’t deter our boys and girls though – I think there were 7 records laid down by the first ten down the course.

The club welcomed three new members this weekend. The first being Lynn Goodfellow driving the Goodfellow Crushers B/DS at 202 MPH. Lynn, a Glendale High School class of ’60 classmate of mine, took advantage of the new Diesel Streamliner class to run his converted lakester with GM Duramax power. Long time racers Jack and Gerry Kelly are the proud parents of son Paul Kelly who drove the Kelly & Hall Racing E/GS to a 208 MPH record. The beautiful little belly tank took on a set of rear fender pants to move into the Streamliner class for this meet. The bike side also had a new member with Mark Richards on the Baling Wire Racing ‘busa in the 1350-APS-BF class at 229 MPH. Mark and his uncle, Don Pearsall, made the trip down from Washington State for the two day meet.

Other club members who made significant runs were; Rick Yacoucci in his 2 cyl. ‘busa powered Streamliner in J/BGS at 173 MPH. Willie Freudiger ran the family F/FMR to a new record of 186 MPH. Bob Jucewic took over the seat in the Cohn-Jucewic Monza and set a new D/CGC record of 199 MPH. Usually we find Bob Moreland in the motorcycle impound. This meet Bob, John Noonan and Richard Lux put together an H/GRMR to set a record of 149 MPH using yet again another ‘busa engine. This car figures to be a contender for the championship as there are numerous classes to run. Howard Hoffman became a new club member last season, this meet the Hairball Racing driver took the D/CBFAlt record to a new standard of 206 MPH. Mike Manghelli is very busy at the races. He can be seen with his laptop running between the Wilson & Waters roadster, Rich Manchen’s lakester and his own White Goose Bar pickup truck. I guess one out of three is not too bad as the White Goose Bar H/MMP set a record at 114 MPH with Mike driving. Club President, John Noonan, rode the Noonan/Moreland 1350-SC-BG to new class record of 187. The sidecar rigs are still hitting the minimums for championship points. Jack Costella’s belly flopper streamliner ran under the Costella-Rock banner in the 250-S-G class with a new record of 144 MPH.

Congratulations to our new members. Come on out to the June 10th meet, the course is good and the racin’ fine.
