Brick in the Wind: Volvo moved by Ford
« on: July 11, 2011, 09:32:18 PM »
There comes a time in ever gearhead's life when he feels the need to hang a picture in the garage of himself in a Nomex suit, leaning against a car caked in salt, squinting in the sun, with a silly grin on his face.

I had a 1984 Volvo 242 sitting around that I paid $170 for and sold the drivetrain out of, and found a 5.0 roller engine out of an '86 Lincoln Town Car on the local Mustang forum for $40.  I have been scrounging, trading, haggling, and recycling everything I can to keep on an income-induced budget, and hope to meet everyone on the salt in 2012.

The Volvo as I found it:

We disconnected everything for the engine and trans pull in the barn, but had to push it out into the snow for the pull because the "engine hoist" was too tall to fit inside:

Neil - that's what we Midwesterners use to mix with salt on our roads in order to create a slurry to rust our cars away.  It's particularly effective on Nissans, Hondas and Mopars.

We don't call it "the Rust Belt" for nothing.

Sorry- lost power last night and did not finish.  As you may have guessed, the car is a little farther along than in those pictures.

The Lincoln 5.0 was hauled home and torn down:

I then cleaned, honed, and painted the block:

...And tossed a rotating assembly from an '89 Mustang that I found for $10 bucks in it (the '87-'93 Mustangs had forged pistons):

I bought a $16 water pump for a Crown Vic to get the proper clockwise rotation, and recycled the pulleys from the Lincoln engine, and bought a March alternator bracket, a new distributor, and all those bits, and began dummying up all the accessories:

After sourcing a Craigslist wiring harness from a '91 Mustang, I commenced wiring the EFI stuff:

More this evening, I must head to work.

Cleaned the gunk out of the oil pan and drilled a couple holes in it for oil drains, and welded them in:

Commenced tearing the interior out of the car:

Bought a '90 240 driving parts car for the manual pedals and euro-spec core support and front fenders:

Sourced a NOS 1981 "eggcrate flathood" grille from a dealership in Germany:

And hung it all on the 242:

I used to work for a guy who "wrecked" Volvos, it seemed there was a limited market for parts from those 2 series Volvos because very little other than the fuel pumps ever failed.everything in them , even the wiring, seemed to be a cut above.

Easy car to chop too

There's probably a mercury switch in the trunk light that you could use as a roll over switch.

You've got the recycle/mix and match deal down too, you'll fit right in here.

Gave a couple hundred bucks for a used Holley Systemax intake with an Edelbrock 75mm throttle body:

Cleaned it up a bit, added some junkyard 24lb injectors, and bolted it on:

Made an EGR blockoff/ nirtrous solenoid mount/ throttle cable bracket out of aluminum angle:

Degreased and rattle-canned the engine bay:

and drug the car home to drop in the engine:

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

I then partially undressed the engine and hung it from a chain:

Then, after taking a moment to say hello to my sister's kitten:

I dropped the engine in the hole:

And commenced wiring and plumbing:

I modified a stock slider to mount a Kirkey seat I found on Craigslist:

And put part of an interior back in to make it streetable again:

A bird liked my carpet, and pooped on it three times:

I picked up a 242GT steering wheel and Rsport gauge cluster and wired the dash:
