From all this chatter I have to assume you guys are talking about people who hammer the crap out of their turbo'd engines before they bring them up to operating temp.
The setup in my tank, the thermostat opens at 180 & that fires the pump. The fan comes on with a 192 switch & only then will I shove my foot down the carb. The temp runs steady under boost at 210 deg all the way up to 150 in second gear & holds 195 deg just cruising. When I shut down, the system keeps running until the fan shuts off at about 170 deg & the pump shuts down at about 160 then cycles one more time after that. No theory here, just real world results.
The bypass thermostat system you guys are talking about is standard on most modern diesels. Automotive stuff tends to use a bypass hose or the heater circuit or a cross port.
