New location?
« on: June 13, 2011, 11:15:08 PM »
Hi kids,

Drove by this the other day - full of water!  had never seen it with water. (This is not my image)

Lake Sevier - west of Delta, UT.

Looks like a few miles of flat when it dries . . . .

When (if?) this baby hits 88mph, you'll see some serious poo.

I've been considering as a place to test my car. That makes no sense since I'm sure I'll be thrashing on it 'til race day. The Sevier River runs through my valley and ends up there. With as much water as we've got right now it will be a while before that lake is dry again. Wayno

I believe Andy Green and the Bloodhound crew already ruled this
out for their project years ago.  Why I can't remember..

I think Andy and Elmo are at different ends of the spectrum -- no offense, Andy.

If it's Flat and Dry, I'd run on it.

I grew up in the town closest to Sevier Lake (Hinckley Utah).  Over the years I've tried to drive on the lake bed several times.  The problem I found is that the lake bed never completely dries out.  I would invariably break through the dry crust and get into really tacky alkali mud.

Now a few miles west of Sevier lake is a hardpan called Ibex hardpan.  It does dryout and if I remember is about 6 miles long.  (Don't hold me to that number since I haven't been to Ibex in years and, even in the desert, things change over time.)  I need to go have a look this summer.

It is actually the Ibex Hardpan that I'm going to take a look at. A friend of mine was out there last week and said it was perfect. He said it is about 3 miles long and quite hard and flat. I will drive out there in a week or two.  :-D Wayno

Ah, Trent, did you happen to note the altitude?    Or perhaps do a mapquest on how to drive there??

I believe this one's been mentioned before when the rocket powered cars were looking for an alternative. There are issues!

Look at the bright side, the Aussies will then think getting to Gairdner is a cakewalk compared to the salt in Bolivia! :-D
