Where to go, what to see
« on: May 25, 2011, 03:51:01 PM »
A friend and I are returning to Speedweek for the first time since '79. I'm sure things have changed since then... can we still get into the pits? to the start line? down course? Are there passes we have to get? Where?

Thanks in advance. Hope to see you all out there.....I'll be the guy with the huge smile on his face.

From the SCTA-BNI website:

The Bonneville Speedway is located approximately 88 miles west of Salt Lake City, UT right off Interstate 80. Wendover is the closest town to the salt flats for accommodations, food, casinos & night life. The spectacular scenery and racing conditions at Bonneville make it one of the most popular areas in the world for speed.

Speed Week consists of seven days of racing in August and World Final is four days of racing in October.

ALL vehicles are allowed to run every day, weather and conditions permitting. There are no special days for motorcycles or cars, etc.

There is no camping ON the salt.  EVERYONE must exit the salt at dusk.

Private campgrounds and hookups are available in nearby Wendover.  Free camping on BLM land West of the salt near bend of the road.

You can purchase entry passes daily/weekly at the entrance to the salt.

Spectators are allowed to walk through the pits, view the vehicles, and talk to the drivers and crew members. Public parking is south of the pit area, on the west side of the race track, outside of the cones.

Be sure to bring a hat, and shade from the sun. If you intend to set up a 'semi-permanent' spectator area, you must secure a tarp as a floor covering on the salt. Don’t forget your camera and bring lots of film, because you will want to remember everything you see. Binoculars are also a great idea since the race vehicles are at least 1/4 mile away as they travel down the course.

There will be vendors located on the salt for food, refreshments, eyewear, sunscreen & much more.

Hotel and accommodation information is available through the Wendover Tourism and Convention Bureau, 1-775-664-3138 or Toll Free 1-866-299-2489.

Please pick up ALL of your trash and take it with you—everyday. There will be dumpsters provided near the pit area.

The colors, excitement, people and smells are some of the reasons we race addicts return to the salt, year after year. Better known as "Salt Fever." CATCH IT!

Records or parts, I didn't come all this way not to break something.

Passes?  Well, there aren't "passes" by that name -- you simply pay the admission fee as you enter the area.  The road ends and (appropriately) "Land's End".  There is a crew there that'll collect the admission fee (I think it's $10 - 15/single day, $50 for the entire week).  You'll get a pin/button to affix to your hat or your purse or whatever -- and that's the thing you'll need to show when you try to gain admittance the next time.  There are no other passes, such as pit passes, to buy -- you get full access with the one basic pin.  You may WALK darn near anyplace.  You're not allowed to drive through the pits, for instance, but you sure can stroll around.  Race crews are allowed to drive in the pits, by the way.  There's plenty of space for public parking, and you also may drive to the spectator area at the far end of the pits, and also to drive down to the starting lines.

Keep asking 'em - -  :-D

No, but dont think it is much, nothing big or fancy, as for super special things some of those west coast guys may have more info.  But if your not familiar with who some of the fast cars are these days, I am would try to see some runs from, Poteet & Main, Burkland, Nish, the Costella guys, Spirit of Rett, if the guys with the 911 blown fuel roadster come back that is an amazing sight....  just a few names that I can think of that you should keep your eyes open for.

You will also want to buy a program at the gate and visit the sales trailer by inspection for tee shirts and other goodies.Get the weekly pass.

While you can, and the SCTA hopes you will, buy a pit pass, program, and rule book upon arrival at the salt. It seems to me the best deal is to go the the home page here. Click on the BNI/SCTA home page. Print the membership form and spend $70 to get them to mail all that to you. Along with results and World Finials stuff too. Just a thought.

Don't forget that you can "rough it" at Bend in the road. Free camping, and you have access to Jon's famous "salt potties". Also you can't miss the "Salt Talks" on Sunday nite. The idea is to enjoy your visit.

Day passes:  $15 per person...good for that day only and will get you back on the salt same day if you leave....as long as they are still racing, the pass is good.

Week passes:  $40 per person...obviously good for the entire week!

Spectators are allowed on the salt starting at 7:00 AM.  This helps keep the traffic down for the racers who are lined up and in a hurry to get to impound.

Just because you're in impound doesn't mean you get to go on the salt before anyone else...you have to wait for the gate to be opened...and I don't open the gate until DW or Roy Creel say so.  Begging, Bribing, Bitc*hing will only cause me extreme displeasure and a "Discussion" will ensue.  Coffee is always a welcome diversion, but won't get you the salt any sooner!     And just so you know...I'm NOT a nice person without coffee in my veins, some things never change and that's one of 'em!

Speed Limit at Land's End is 10 mph  go faster, try to break out of line and pass others to get to the salt will definitely delay you longer.  Try to blow past everyone else and I WILL step in front of your vehicle, and NO, I will not jump out of the way.  If you hit me...that "Discussion" word will show up again.

I love all of "my racers" and will not allow anyone, including the racers themselves, to endanger the fulfillment of chasing those dreams on the salt by being stupid 100 feet from the salt.

I'm getting older, getting slower, and seem to have less patience with stupid as time goes by!!

Also, the lane setup will be the same as it was last year, that lane I make in the very center of the road is for the racers, the 2 outside lanes to the right will be spectator lanes, the far left lane is the emergency/exit lane...stay out of there it is not an entrance except for those rare green sticker people!  If your sticker is orange, don't follow up that exit, I'll stop you!

Okay, now that that's out of the way, I'm going to crawl back into my cave and hibernate for a couple more months!!!  See you in August, Everyone Stay Safe!!

Lynda, maybe you should post this last one over and over.  Say - every couple of weeks through the middle of July, and then at least weekly from then 'til the beginning of SpeedWeek.  It'd help me remember the rules of Land's End, that's for sure.
