GPS-Speedometer 160mph
« on: May 08, 2011, 11:40:36 PM »
Looking for a used GPS / speedo for a bike project that will read  160 +..
Possibly a tach/speedo combo, if there is such a thing.

No combo but this unit will take you to 200, has large display and easy to read.
Better hurry, no longer made.
Was considering this unit for my car but with only a measly 200.....

I used my iphone with a free GPS app at World Finals.  I already had the phone and the app was free!  Downside, the free app I used didn't show 1/10ths.  Upside, it gave me enough info to tweak my position on the bike and pick up 2mph.   :-D

Looks like Summit is sold out. That was a nice size unit.

These guys are out of Orem Utah. We stopped by their shop a while back. They will custom make your speedo and not too expensive. They have off the shelf 200 mph and 260 mph. I think most run $250 to $300. we are thinking of buying one for the roadster just to help with licensing new drivers.

I really never thought of using a hand-held unit. I have a Garmin gps ll and a Magellan 2000. Wonder if either of those would work.
Actually, the motive is to have a tach and speedo close enough together that you could possibly catch any wheel spin. If known by calculation, a given rpm = a given speed. If the tach reading increses without the speedo increasing, time to back off enough to get traction again.

You don't really need a gps, how about a speedo on the front wheel...

everything you can ask for, including heads-up display

That looks like the ultimate combo. Price is not bad either.  I'm just wondering how readable that would be say at 150 with your chin on the chin pad and a 94" v-twin below that. Might get kinda blurry.

There are also some very inexpensive three digit digital bicycle speedometers that will work. I saw one at Bonneville last year that I was told went up to 175 mph (I'd like to see the bicycle that they build this speedometer for)

The heads up display would fix that.... or it may make more sence just change the motor to a busa and it will work fine  :-P

A small problem with the Veypor in my application.  I don't have a 12 volt battery or any other kind.  I don't have a coil.  I don't have points.  I do have a breakerless stator and rotor ignition with a kill switch wire and a spark plug wire.  I don't know the brand or where I got it - I bought it in 1956 as an aftermarket ignition for my Harley Hummer 2 stroke.  It replaced my lantern battery ignition which replaced my 6 volt stock ignition.  Hyper modern for the year and no battery to run down...
139mph with no bike, but with speedo and helmet.
