Your Helmet and SFI 38.1
« on: April 22, 2011, 12:09:13 AM »
As you know SFI 38.1 (e.g., HANS) is a “system”. It is not a single item, but a collection of parts working together for your safety. Change any part in the system and you become a test pilot.

The new rule book 3.A.2 Driver’s Helmet says” . . . upgrade to the now available Snell SA2010(FIA 8860-2010), Snell SAH2010 or FIA 8860-2010 standard helmets if making a new purchase. The Snell rating label change date from 2005 to 2010 will occur in 2016.

So not a big deal because of the very reasonable time frame. However, if you are making a purchase to meet SFI 38.1 it might be important for you to read the first two paragraphs here:
http://www.smf.org/standards/sa/SA2010/SA2010FHR7-22-10.pdf

You can see that only SAH2010 insures you meet the total system requirements. If you buy, or bought, a SA2010 helmet be careful how you upgrade to the “H” level. This is a subtlety you will not find anywhere except at SNELL.

DISCLAIMER: I’m not criticizing  any organization or person. I’m not complaining. I’m not trying to re-write or clarify any rule. I’m not asking for any change. You may or may not consider it valuable. I’m only providing the information so you can make a personal decision.

I should mention that the above link is an adendum to the Snell SA/K2010 standard finalized last July. Prior to that time the adendum for Frontal Head Restraint had not been completed. That link above is the final adendum. If you want to see all the standards go here.

But it is the adendum that is the most important because that completes the connection to HNR (38.1) device.
