Broken part pics from E motor
« on: April 20, 2011, 08:54:53 PM »
Not as bad as it could have been. Lucky that when the valve head broke off the stem it did smack the piston a few times, but got knocked back in and stuck... also glad I shut down the motor when I did...

One new piston and a set of rings ordered and on the way,

You're lucky.  At high RPM usually the piston disintegrates, and it's all over.  Been there, done that!

Thanks for your response to my C/FALT wing question.

You did get lucky.

Every time I think I've seen it all, something like this pops up and proves me wrong.

Yeah it is a bad sign if when you pull the head, there is no piston on the con rod, and the head looks like someone beat on it with a miners pick for a half an hour.

Quick a quick shutdown can save a lot of parts.

Had the same thing happen to an AMC 401 v8 - it broke an intake valve just like yours and the valve head sliced and diced the piston and all the pieces were in the oil pan. The broken valve head almost stuffed the exhaust valve head through the exhaust port too, head was a real mess.

The worst blow up I had was a 455 Pontiac motor. When I pulled the manifold I found piston ring pieces about 1/2 inch long laying in the lifter valley.I still cant figure that out.
Thank you to all the volunteers

Seen that one a lot. I measured a flathead at Bonneville once that had the piston perpendicular to the bore.

That cylinder head should be really easy to repair by welding. You're a very lucky man Charles.

PJ,, yes it sure could have and was mere seconds from being WORSE... I am Glad DART is working with me to cast a new block in my small bore size.  It delays the re build and I will not make May with the E motor,, but Hope for June  then a 200 MPH pass in July in Loring,,, I am sad the motor was hurt, glad it was not worse and now pumped on the new plan for the IMPROVED   "E"  motor...

Charles,
Any idea of the cylinder wall thickness on your new Dart block?

I would look real close for the reason the valve broke. Springs? Clearance? 8500rpm is not much on a good valve train. I run my SBC E motor 9500 so I'm not pullin your chain.

Doug, my E motor turned 9500 on dyno too...  for Maxton I have it limited to 8500... I was saving so rpms for Bonneville..

Looks like the water in the valve guides held that exhaust valve open... and piston smaked it.
but no way to know for sure,,,

My valve train is high end high rpm stuff.. Offset shaft roker set up ti locks and keepers etc..
the weak link is the valves there are good SS Ferrera's  but not the Ti like I would prefer. I am working on Exceldyne now for Ti valves... but these are one off sizes... Since you have an E motor then you know what I mean.

Charles, I just took a set of old Cup Titanium 1.625 exhaust valves and cut the OD down to 1.55. That is as big as will clear the small bore. Now yes I have engine building equipment and a valve grinder so my cost was just my own labor. If you want to know a cheap easy way to cut the head down, email me and I'll try and explain how I did it.

That is a good idea,,I will start looking,,, My intake valves are 2.00 not sure of ex valve size, but think near 1.50

My bore is 3.765 and we had to do some serious machine work on the block and heads,,,

Thanks for the heads up.

Bummer on the E-motor.  Want to borrow mine?  I have several.  Still, you'll have even more HP for sure.
