Maxton May Meet - Who has work to do ?
« on: April 04, 2011, 11:13:04 PM »
Oh well the preliminary look into my "E" motor problem is WATER... I pulled the hood off and discovered a fuel stain on the intake right above #6 and 8 cylinders, that vacuum leak caused the rpm high idle. it also looks like it blew out the intake gasket and possibly head gasket. I pulled that valve cover and yep looks like a vanilla milk shake.

So for sure our refresh schedule has been forced up from summer to NOW...I will be pulling the engine this weekend and getting it ready for a complete rebuild.  While it's out we are going to "upgrade" a few things, add a few things all to increase the power and durability. (also beef every thing up in case we decide to add some N20 later)

May 14th will be here soon, so we gotta lot of work to do.

See you all in May... with a new and improved "E" Motor

Bummer Charles, I saw you pulling out of the lanes, you didn't look too happy. Good luck with the rebuild.

I need to change some shift forks in the bike, hopefully get the airshifter dialed in. Should keep me busy.

I have to deal with this front of the crank issue. I am about to remove the alternator and just run on batterys. I have two large ones and if we charge in line it won't be a problem. Add a second fire system and do some roll cage work. All in all not that bad. The Onan {brand New} stopped working on Sat. Thats a problem!!! starts and runs. Just zero output. Pulling it is worse that pulling the motor on the Camaro. Its 8 feet up on the side of the trailer and I just have never been able to lift 300 pounds over my weak butt. So its off to the tool rental for the fork lift.

Bob Cox,
Every time I have had generator problems like that, it was a film buildup on the slip rings. Remove the brushes and use a scotchbrite pad on the rings while rotating the armature. When you open the trailer door after it has been sitting a while all closed up, do you smell gas fumes...if so, that is what is causing the film deposit.
Hope it works for you...we're too old to be pulling that heap!!!

I've got a wife to work on, but replacement is not an option.

I've replaced 2 of them. It's not that difficult just expensive. I think the current one is a keeper, besides she drive the race car. :-D :-D :-D

Replace valve covers with some fabbed covers that won't leak. A trip to the dyno to work on jetting and timing...we ran a little rich. A new billit shifter for the TREMEK. A remote battery charger hook up. Check the valve lash. Replace the oil filters and check for any glistening shinny stuff. Read the instructions on my Go Pro camera so I will actually have it turned on during a run and not burning up the battery in the tow line. Fab a new airdam I hit a low spot in the shutdown area and bent it up pretty good.

Now that I bumped that 500 production record a few mph and got Oxcart Racing into the record book my attention turns to the 996 and getting that Airtech body, windscreen and the fender I picked up from Sabat in Maxton on her in time for May.  Afew other small itesm such as a 520 quick change sprocket system and conversion to one disc up front are also on the plate but finishing up cutting and fitting the body is the big one.

The meet went great! Nothing broke......! We're getting ready for Loring in July. I just want to say thank you to the ECTA staff for  a great experience. We were all blown away by the Green Hat Group that welcomed Brian so warmly.

We've really enjoyed our time at Maxton and look forward to racing with the ECTA again - hopefully a bit farther North....

We always have work to do.  Just seems to come with the territory.  Looks like we will make it to Maxton in May after all.  A big thanks to Monty Spears and the Run 1 Racing Motorsports Team.  With running a 4 bike AMA Roadracing Team, he has found time to help us out also.  See you all in May.

Motor Update,

Luke and I got the Stude on the lift tonight. Removed the trans tunnel, Removed the Radiator and drained the block... The good news was when we drained the system only water came out with no oil in the water/cooling system,,, I do know some water got in the oil via a blown gasket.

Tomorrow night the plan is to get the motor and trans out and on the stand for transport to the engine shop a few miles away.
