Ray Therat is on a mission and can't be interrupted.

I am on a chair and I can post.

Check this link. It's in the Everett Herald newspaper this morning.

Thank you all for your wonderful comments on this site and NPR (Chris); it's been a lot of overtime and a whirlwind, thus I am slowly catching-up on emails and posts etc.  The success of the Urban car in Houston of setting an new Americas record is HUGE and a foundation for more things to come. We are updating our website and will have more photos available soon  -  stay tuned

Off to the school board meeting now to update them.

It's been a while since my last post about our "LSR Urban Concept Car" (if LSR and Urban Concept go together?) - here an update.  Yesterday we spent the day at the PACCAR Test Center in Mt. Vernon (see an aerial view at http://www.paccar.com/company/PTC_open_house.asp ) After switching back to the higher speed rated Pirelli Diabolo 100/80-16 tires (from the Michelin low resistance tires we used in Houston) we ran 2 tests

- First a 6 miles fuel efficiency, that's 4 laps on the banked oval, using pump mineral diesel then repeat the same session with B20 biodiesel; best result overall with the B20 was 159ml/6miles = ~142 MPG.

- Second we did the 2/10 mile acceleration test which we will repeat at World of Speed running a best of 28:92 seconds, again with the B20 (and we removed the muffler  :-D  )  now with some lengthy math, since all Elapsed Time calculators only give me the 1/4 mile, I got 24.896 mph. Can someone please verify or help with a formula.  I will have the students figure it out tomorrow too.

Additionally we tuffed the current car body to get some aero flow feedback.  We did not finish the longtail LSR body in time to test.  Stay tuned for the 35mph photo on the banked oval (no at that speed it is not self steering)

all in all a great day for 5 students and us adults - glad one of them had the 24 Le Mans live on his mobile phone !

I'm happy that they aren't spoiled.......................

It must be difficult roughing it as you have to do.

GREAT job, Michael.

Freud, I know it's really rough and tough......I had to give up my Saturday and miss out on honey do's  :-)

Picture 1 - we added a few tuffs (fuzzies) with blue tape - nothing is going on in the center of the nose - front fender - side of the roof and back-top of body show more flow and rough air.
Picture 2 - at about 33+ mph at the top of the bank - how much fun can a kid have (and still be within the liability insurance guidelines of a school district?)
Picture 3 - So, you want to drive one of these Urban cars on the road......?
Picture 4 - Testing cars is serious business; team photo at the end of a fun and educational day.

And here a first glimpse at our LSR tail body mock-up/jig.  It will curve to a point and will be made from styrofoam and fiberglass.  We will be able to split this rear body at the max. car length allowed by the Shell rules (350cm), having some sort of a Kamm effect blunt tail, or use the whole tear drop shaped tail, which brings the overall car lenght to 430cm (~14 feet).  The idea is to have many ways to test all sorts of things and make it educational; Philippe the Firewall our mascot is all smiles (and he is not a ginger bread man)

Quiet time at school - kids are off on vacation. Nonetheless a lot of logistics and preparation needs to get done, including drafting a "fitting the occasion" new LSR-Long Tail logo for our T-shirts, vests, perhaps even a sticker etc.     There is room for sponsor logos  :-D

I also contacted the -Save the Salt - Coalition to find out if they would be interested in us carrying their message/web address on the new tail as our contribution to raise awareness.

What else?  It's still raining here in WA State !

The Treit and Davenport project, Target550, are offering the transportation and shop facilities to the

Granite Falls HS teams for their trip to World of Speed.

When a High School "shop class" can present a project so impressive that the CEO of Shell Oil comes to see them at

The Aspen Ideas Festival, how can we do any less?

Thank you Marlo and Freud for your offer. I understand it's a long trailer - so - we thought we make a really long tail to fill the trailer and fit the occasion :)

A good few hours of work at school today to continue the LSR long tail build

Picture 1  Jasmine and Tim using our homebuilt hotwire and templates to cut the 1/2" foam for the top.  Bandsaw and table saw were used to cut the other pieces.
Picture 2  The l-o-n-g tail; we marked the original urban car tail in red; then there will be an intermediate "Kamm" tail and the tear drop LSR tail bringing the base 9'8" long car to 14'5".   5.6 oz Fiberglass with epoxy resin in-and outside is next.

.........and then there is the $$$green$$$ - your (sponsor) logo here message :-)

We once again showed both our cars at the annual Show-N-Shine car show in Grnite Falls, and we won 1st place in the Going Green Award. See our little orange and black #200 on the right. The 51/53-2011 cabover Chevy Truck carrying the powered Radio Flyer was created by our Skills Center welding instructor Bob Throndsen.  Which one would you rather have?

...and here 2 more pictures from Friday - we reassembled the jig to laminate in the engine bay bulkhead and floor in place.

picture 1 - Semira applies resin to the 2" tape joint bulkhead - floor. She is also one of 2 "ShopGirls" (i.e. from the all girls prototype car team) who is joining UrbanAutos for this Bonneville venture. Jasmine and Hunter maneuvering the longtail body in place.

picture 2 -  The bulkhead is "re-purposed" from a just right size Shell poster foam core board we picked-up at the last Shell Eco-marathon in Houston. This saved us time!

Additional News - Advanced Refining Concepts   http://www.clearrefining.com/    sent us 10 gallons of their GDiesel to use for our alternative fuel testing at World of Speed.  It was alternative fuel coordinator Kent Singleton who made us aware of this new fuel.

X-24 Days  :-)
