Next week will be our 4th time at the Shell Eco-marathon Fuel Efficiency competition in Houston Texas.  This now 4 year old car keeps changing and is providing excellent learning. With lots of overtime and great hands-on experiences for the students in our industry partner and volunteer Ed’s machine shop we upgraded the Urban Concept car’s rear engine compartment ingredients.

- We replaced the whole rear steel tube frame, engine with its CVT belt drive and:
- Moved firewall forward and took advantage of the space under the seat.
- Aluminium frame machines and fabricated from extrusions and tubing.
- Single wheel drive and aluminum axles eliminating the differential and steel axle.
- A new Yanmar L48 210cc 4.5hp diesel engine.
- A tuned velocity stack with intake air temperature sensor; exhaust is now strait up which makes it quieter
- Machined off the flywheel forced air cooling fins and replace it with a thermostat controlled electric fan to keep it hotter = less fuel
- Very light weight (and high $$) Lithium MC-battery
..... and, taa-taaaa strait coupled it with a 5-speed transmission from a 250 cc Yamaha – thus the 3rd pedal.
8 points of data including 3 way acceleration/GPS are collected with an AIM EVO4 and displayed on a MyChron3 Dash.
With losing weight and gaining a transmission we are still ~25 lbs lighter than last year at just about 408lbs.

It is now a “drivers” car – our two drivers Brooke and Hunter are already betting on who will set the higher mileage.  No prediction yet because after just a few laps for each and some debugging it went in true race fashion onto to the trailer bound for Houston!

It sure ticks over nice in 5th and has the “right speed”.  Wondering how fast it would go on the 130/150 track at WOS?

Stay tuned for the link to the documentary film Shell has made about our car program and educational outreach to Elementary and Middle school students.
