Robert Rufi
« on: January 07, 2011, 11:26:14 PM »
Robert Rufi's daughter manages the store where I buy most of my speed parts.  She wants to know the records he held and how long he had them.  This is what I could find out and I am not entirely sure it is accurate.  He raced before WW2 on El Mirage.  Possibly other places after the war.  His was a special construction car.  The pioneer belly tank might have taken his record.

Not specificly answering your question, but there's a ton of information (and a lot of b.s.) on [just] the Jalopy Journal as shown by this google advanced search:

http://www.google.com/search?q=rufi+site%3Awww.jalopyjournal.com&hl=en&num=10&lr=&ft=i&cr=&safe=images&tbs=

the search can be narrowed by adding a word (record, perhaps) immediately after rufi once on google.com

Records did not go into the rulebook for a pretty long time; El Mirage wasn't done until the 80's, I think. Some of the publications (books) may have some of the info. If it is just Bonneville there are a few folks who have the results for many of the years but would not know if when the next person upped the record without having all of them infront of them at the same time. The Rufi entry name would be needed too. The person wanting the info would need to go to who has them. I don't think anyone will let them off their property....Good Luck

American Hot Rod Foundation, Jim Miller. He may be interested in talking to Bob's daughter, he is planning on making a recreation of the car. I hooked him up with a 3 port Olds head yesterday.

Wasn't the late Bob Giovanine partners with Rufi and won the 1949 SCTA championship in a roadster.
I know he was running a 1925 chev 4 cyl in a modified roadster when he passed away in 2000 and his son Curt has the car in Bishop calif.

It was pure coincidence.  Yesterday I was looking for a book on exhaust tuning at Powells Books in Portland.  There were two copies of ISBN 0-93-6892-18-8 "Flatout" by Albert Drake.  This book has a lot about Bob Rufi and his fellow racers.  There are several pictures of his cars.  He was a carpenter and he built the SCTA timing stand.  I bought one copy and there is one remaining.  The one left on the shelf is a used book.  There are some coffee stains on it but nothing real bad.  It would be a good reference for someone interested in his car.  Powells takes internet orders.

Al Drake is an early 50's Portland hot rodder, who ended up teaching English at Uof Michigan.  After retirement, he returned to Portland.  He's written a number of books on early hot rodding:

Buy his books, they're worth it.

wobblywalrus ---- While researching another project I came across another good picture of Bob Rufi's streamliner.

The Rodder's Journal  - #46 / winter 2009 - "The California Kid" on the cover.

It's a two page pic like a centerfold ... pgs. 120-121. Nice clear photo of the car, on a trailer without the wheel pants. I'm sure Bob is one of the three guys in the photo involved with the car going on / off the trailer.  Very frameable if it meant a lot to someone.

Unfortunately my scanner isn't scanning and it's a little too big to do it well anyway.
If this is useful information it might be worth going on a treasure hunt.

Plan B

If the scanner doesn't work, just do a high resolution photo of it.

Frequently the camera shot exceeds the detail of the scan.
