fire nozzle positioning..

on a rear engine lakester where should the nozzles be in the drivers compartment? i know on the engine they go in between the header and oil pan rail.. but in the driver compartment we had them behind the driver pointed at the firewall (because engine is behind you) and was told this is not correct.. anybody have any input? thanks

You'd be right 'sept......

Depends on the type of system you have.
If you have "cold fire" liquid/foam type system aim it at the driver BUT not at his face/visor. The foam will help cool the drivers body & suppress the fire but you don't want to obstruct the drivers vision with foam.
If using halon or that type of system aim towards the driver & area around him.
One note, Halon, Co2, and some other types of fire suppression systems REMOVE oxygen from the air to smother the fire. This also removes the breathing air from your driver, especially in a closed cockpit. Use caution.

Michael, I see you live in Chino Hills, did you know Gary Fore that used to work at Chino Hills Ford for Leonard Woods. He ran a black Willys coupe drag racing. We met him at the Goodguys in 1992 at Sonoma and he came to the Gasser World Championships in Denver 1994. He recently moved to Missouri and is running a Mustang with a jet engine in it.

Think about the area you are protecting... it this a large roomy area or just enough room for you.  How many nozzles were you using. 
There is no one way fits all. 
If you have a very tight compartment I would put a nozzle at your feet, single discharge hole, not a triple, this will give you the longest protection time.
Remember you are protecting you, not the car  :-o

The rule book requests that you contact the manufacturer for the best info regarding the fire system.

thanks for the input. currently we have 2 nozzles and they are both on the rear firewall..  steve davies suggests leaving one there and putting the other at our knee area. it is a pretty tight cockpit.. its a firefox system
