Dan, you still lust after my Little "E" motor,, how sweet  :-D  LOL

Hmm, my motor in your car ??  I would say 165 to 180 MPH with ease.

We can build you a more budget friendly version of my "E" motor if you only want to go 150 MPH..

See you in October

Ok sohow much horsepower does it take to run 150. 3500 lb car? in 63, Fomoco had a 221 260 and 289 V-8. and a 270 hp 289 hi po.

I had a turbo charger dodge in Europe it topped out a 137. speedo said 140, yes Miles per hour.

Depends on aero and a lot of other variables, but a rule of thumb is 150 - your results may vary, plus tax and your old recappable tires, etc, etc.

The 221 keeps you easily in "E" but the tiny bores may hinder flow to the point that the six may have an advantage.  The 289 puts you in "D" - and near the bottom of it.  Might as well go with a 302/5.0.  Remember, aftermarket heads are OK as long as the port config is stock.

Forgt to tell you - I always liked those Meteors.  I was around when they came out.

Dan, I think your 150 number is really optimistic. There are a lot of street cars run at Maxton with (supposedly) twice that struggling for that speed. Accelerating to speed at Maxton takes excess power over what the final aero requirement will be. With lot more distance, might get there. My car is just a bit lighter at 3200, makes close to 300hp (calculated- 235 wheel hp dyno) and I am just over 150 at Maxton, 170 at Bonneville. As you pointed out, lot of variables. Lot of threads here where someone new come aboard haveing done well at drag strip or other racing venues and pronounce how they are going to go 200 at Bonneville and get a red hat. Met with lots of snickers if not worse. Anyway, build what you want, make it safe, go racing and have fun. Then when you get the big bug, especially after a trip to the salt, you can mortgage the house and wife and build some POWER.  :-D

Another thing would be the power band of the motor and keeping in it that band. Seems like Maxton you would need a bit lower and closer gears than at the salt flats.

We did build some stuff and run when I was stationed in Saudi Arabia, most of the country was hard flat packed gravel, not the sand dunes you think of.

I have in mind for the motor, four bolt mains and even a main girdle, to keep the caps from walking. Balance the crank without the rotating assembly, then again with it Oliver titanium rods. I have found you dont need high volume oil pumps, a reg. new pump does just as well and uses a few hp less.

Question on the head, does this mean you cannot port and polish them? So if I  used an aluminum head Twisted wedge "Fast as Cast" that would be ok?
right now I have a new set of 302. Gt-40-Ps on the car and even though the comp ratio dropped a bit I dont think it was a .5, the breathing is way better on the heads, even with cast iron manifolds, did put screw in rocker studs, 7/16 one at that. and Scorpion Rocker arms.

I have plenty of other horse power, they nicker at me when I walk outside.

You can port and polish anything. For Production ONLY, the port configuration must be similar to stock. For instance, my engine comes  stock with a  head that is not crossflow (like the straight 6's and 8's that folks have talked about here. I have a SB2.2 on it (older Nascar technology).  I have to run GC.  If the twisted wedge head does not change the basic port configuration you can use it.

Oops - I screwed up - musta been tired.  I meant to type 300 HP to go 150, not 150 to go 150.  And about 900 to hit 200.  Darn drag curve.
