Looking at the cover size of Speed Demon's manifold it eyeballs at about 12 x 24. The shape is complex so I'll simplify and say the manifold is 12 x 12 x 24. That's 3,456 square inches. At 20 psi that's 69,120 pounds of force trying to . . . Well, actually did, push it apart.

Any kind of hiccup that allows a backfire vastly increases that pressure. Pressure vessels are quite the art.
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

Oh, yeah....the one where the car decided it needed more holes in its head.  Forgot about that one.

Don't forget when it burned the oil line to the turbo on the 4 cylinder and about burned the car down two years ago.

Don't forget when it burned the oil line to the turbo on the 4 cylinder and about burned the car down two years ago.

Yeah, but that wasn't an engine failure.  That was a cataclysm caused by a kluge done during a turnaround.  An EGT sensor had blown out of a header pipe and the escaping exhaust gas melted a valve cover gasket.  They were able to screw the sensor back in, but didn't trust it.  Against Kenny Dutteiler's advice, they made a shield from hi-temp fabric.  You can see it in the attached foto.

The shield worked fine in protecting the VC gasket, when the sensor blew out again.  But it re-directed the exhaust gas directly onto an oil line and that's when things went to Hudson Hornet.

Gotta give the team credit.  They did a week's worth of work in under 3 days to restore the back half of the car from a charred and melted mess to a nearly-pristine hunk of race car.  If it hadn't been for the bubbled paint, most casual observers never would have known that there had been any trouble.

I otta make something clear.  That team pays me to do their photos during the meets.  And I've gotten to know many of the team members and consider them friends.  But I don't think that influences the way I report things about the team and the car.  I may have more photos of 'em cuz I''m there more often, but that's as far as it goes.  I try to maintain neutrality in reporting and call it as I see it.  On the case of the the burned oil line, it was a mistake they made in deciding to make that shield, even if the idea was well-intentioned.

enuff said.  I need to shower and get to the salt.

Good Morning, Bonneville.  Here's what we can see so far:

The Ack Attack team was here through about 2AM swapping engines.  They're lit the motors once or twice already today, so that's a positive sign.  The bike is still on the lift and they are putting the bodywork on pretty quick here really soon like, maybe.  They will run as soon as they do.

Scott Horner is working in the pit with Jamie -- will run this morning.  And the Jack Rogers Realty 757 Camaro will be making runs, too.  As will the lawnmower -- this time with real lawn.

Hunh?  Yeah -- I guess under the rules of fast lawnmower international sanctioning rules - a record requires that the mower drive over a patch of grass.  There's probably even a minimum size required (maybe a square yard of something about that size, maybe more -- I'll learn and help you learn).  John Hansen (Peppermill Group) offered to help -- 'cause since they're in the process of re-doing some of the lawn areas around the casinos they've got plenty of grass that's being removed.  He'll supply some for the event.  And that's what's happening at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Except for - - wait'll you see what I just got.   It'll show up in a post in a few minutes.

Ack bike should be ready to run in less than a half-hour.  Wind is 5-10 mph at the tower, zero at the three mile.  Scott Horner will run 1708 bike first--pretty soon.

Well, that was cool.  Scott decided to run from the highway.  Here's that shot:

He's been saying that he wanted maximum room to run up to speed.  So -- he used all of it -- look at these two shots - showing a bike whose rider was hard on the throttle:

So hard, in fact, that the camera wouldn't recycle fast enough for the second photo:

And here's the last one -- Scott Horner going away FAST.

His speeds were 240 entry, 229 kilo, 226 mile, and 207 exit.  Don't know yet why he slowed -- he's now stopped at the 7 mile.

In other news, the Ack bike is on the ground at the highway end - and waiting for the wind to get right for a run.

Nope, they're not out for breakfast -- they're waiting for the wind to do something like stabilize or mellow ouit.  It's dead calm in the pits but howling at 8-11 across from the saddle in the mountains, or it's 1-4 at the tower but 7 at the 3 1/2, and so on.  They're just as anxious -- probably more so -- than you and I.  They call for wind reports every two or three minutes -- just switched to a different radio setup so they can get faster wind checks from the tower and support crew on the race track.

I went to Scott Horner's pit and watched the on-bike video from his run.  I like the setup -- not only a camera, but there's GPS and accelerometer and tach and throttle position and boost indicator -- on the screen during playback.  I'll get more information for you -- I'm seriously interested in that camera system.  Whatever -- the playback shows Scott at about 240 well before the two mile and then cruising at that speed to and through the five, with occasional wheelspin to keep things exciting.  Then, in the measured mile, it gets kinda wiggly -- and he ends up moving from the left side to the right and nearly trimming the mile marker and even more closely missing a cone or two.  Exciting run for Scott.

Back to Ack -- wind has died down all up and down the track.  Maybe they'll soon run.  Hope your eggs haven't got too hard-boiled while you've been waiting.

Ack says they'll freshen the ice in the 'cooler and then have Rocky complete prep for a run.  No promises, of course.

And there are 47 minutes left in the window for Scott to return on the run.  He's going for a Leslie Porterfield record of 232.
