Another snowmobile on the salt?
« on: September 09, 2010, 11:15:02 AM »
Hello everybody. Last year, I was part of the team that set a record at the Shootout with a snowmobile. We did set a  203 mph average and we had an exit speed of over 210 on one pass. We where very happy to meet our goal and one member of the land speed forum even said we where "partying agressively". Well, we are proud of that too.

:)

We had the chance to meet very friendly people. Ray the Rat, with his wonderful pictures, Seldom Seen Slim, Mike Cook and sons, the team of Mormon Missile, Chris Carr and the Bub Team, the very likable Drew Gatewood, the very dedicated team of Speed Demon: 430 mph on one pass if I remember well. There was also the Buckeye Bullet team working hard and sucessfully and the Ack Attack crew did show up...
This is good, because, at the shootout, the atmosphere is very relaxed and we have time to talk and witness history being made. This will be one of the highligts of my life.

The experience was so great that we plan to get back in 2 or 3 years with another snowmobile and much higher goals. Gilles, the mentor of the project, went to this year's BUB event and he was told another snowmobile was seen making tests on the salt last month (August). Trying to know more, the best he could gather was from Dennis Manning who reported seeing it while preparing for the BUB event.

That would be wonderful for us to have another competitor. It will give us more legitimacy and credibility. And we would have more of a challenge for our next run.

We would like to know who they are. We'd be more than willing to help and share our knowledge with them.

Does anyone have any info?

Thanks

Robert Veronneau

Hey, question for you. What about those of us who compete, using a snowmobile engine for power?
Those who said it could not be done, should not stand in the way of those who are already doing it!

As far as I know the fastest snowmobile engined car is still Jack Harris' streamliner driven by his son Brett.  Their J/BGS record was 220.932 set at World of Speed in September of 1994.  Their car, the former Charlie Brown Special, built by the Burklands, laid claim to being "the fastest car you start with a rope."  Their back up engine was in a snowmobile on a rack over the cab of their truck.   Brett made his licensing, qualifying and record runs, all in the same day to take the record away from his dad.

Jack, "The Sheriff" Harris and his Posse, competed in the 2009 NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series.  Their Nitro Thunder, front engined dragster was the series champion with an AAFD record 5.56 E. T. and a top speed of 263.62.  Not too bad for some guys from Kaysville, UT!
