The biggest issue is Maine Fish and Wildlife ... Loring AFB property is a nesting area for a threatened species ... Bob can help out with this ... I think the upland plover or some such bird ... Dont what they did when the B-52 were there but it is the issue ... we cannot race before August when the fledglings are out of the nests ...

There is a 4500 acre Refuge on the property, abuts our main runway on the East side.
The Maine Inland Wildlife Dept categorizes the Upland Sandpiper as a "Threatened" species, and will not allow our racing activity during the breeding season of May through July. We have been fortunate that we have been allowed to infringe slightly in both of our events into July, as in one day in 2009, and two days in 2010.
Ideally we had originally planned on holding our event(s) exactly in that three month period until we were informed otherwise.
All of the arguments regarding the birds existing happily at other relatively nearby airports, or similar points have been raised before on this list, and we have dozens of threads and thousands of posts to search on it if you are that interested.
We are currently exploring other dates , notably end of April or a mid  September.
Hang in there, we are really on it.

Freud,

No spares per say (extra engine yes)  For B'ville, we will have extra's, so should the E motor give up, no spare for it,, it is highly specialized and to many one off custom stuff in it...but if that far from home and it does let go,,, we will just stick a "D" or "C" motor in her and change classes and enjoy the experiance.

Why do you ask ?  do you think I am going to break ?  I only turn 8200 (she can go over 9,000) the only way I would dial up the limiter is for a return run on a solid qualifier.

I don't know about northern Maine, but up here in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, it is not uncommon at all to have some snow still on the ground in late April.  Before you guys get too excited -- someone might ask a few locals about the "all-clear" date up there.

N/A motors seem to like "a bit chilly"  so do use big drives sitting all suited up in Black Cars !!

There may be some snow in the woods and left over snow banks but the runway would be clear.

Don't rule it out but it is rare. Snow can fall but will be gone as soon as sun hits it.

I grew up in Caribou and can remember one June when I kicked over a pile of tops in a potato field and found snow under it still.
That has been a long time ago though!!  Snow happens!!
