The nice part is that you won't need 11 miles.

As W.C. Fields once quipped, "Talk's cheap. It takes money to buy whiskey." I drove to El Mirage yesterday to see the lake for myself. What I observed from the gate with the big red stop sign that says Lake Closed was a standing puddle toward the center. I believe I was facing west toward Los Angeles County. The area to the left of the puddle (south?) appears bone dry. The area immediately to the right of the entrance on to the lakebed running (to the north?) toward the Shadow Mountains appears bone dry. So much for the rumors the lake is full of water! Horsefeathers!

The lake bed full of water report was following the rain storm prior to last weekend's scheduled event. Of course there is some evidence of water recession.

Rain last night has now added to "small" puddle you observed. I posted in another thread that an inspection will be made on Nov. 6th, and the decision to race will be announced on/before Nov. 10th.

Good luck with your event the following week. If the BLM posts the LakeBed Closed sign will you get an injunction to enter the area?

DW,

LOL! I'm not saying or threatening any thing that four lawyers with ninety-three years of combined legal experience are or aren't likely to do. As of yesterday there was plenty of bone-dry lake bed of sufficient length for us to hold our little piddly event. I am extremely hopeful the nice folks at BLM will accommodate us on November 21st.

Four lawyers, 93 years of experience.  Man, I don't think the BLM or Mother Nature have a hope in hell of preventing this meet for going on!
Get off the stove Grandad.  You're too old to be riding the range.

Alan, what happens is, if there is a little "puddle" on the lake bed and they open it to the public the 4-wheelers will turn it into a mud bog. The lakebed is protected by the BLM for that very reason. As mentioned above, you CANT compete with mother nature! If your event has to be cancelled your just gonna have to deal with it or find someplace else to run.

You guys are cracking me up! I have no intention of asking a Federal Judge to pick a padlock in boonies. We have a Plan "B" that will hopefully work out and, if not, we'll run the event some other time. Thousand of dollars worth of trophies and gear can sit in storage, and we'll eventually get around to using it. Maybe I can sell the trophies to Murphy's? The joint was closed yesterday or I've have stopped and swilled down a few cold ones.

FYI, Scott and I were out there yesterday for mud patrol, and at the west end there was water shore to shore.  The wind will blow the water from end to end, side to side, and perhaps when you were there Saturday, the wind had it all down where the SCTA starting line and pits would be.  It is by no means dry, and anyone travelling on it would leave trails that would be hard to remove, if you could get your vehicle back off the lakebed.  It appears that the weather forecast for next week could work in our favor, but the powers that be will ultimately make the decision.

Thanks for the report Paula. Don't forget to call me when you figure out what Saturday I'm doing patrol.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Alan,
I just spoke with the El Mirage coordinator, and received a photo of it's
current condition.  I still do not know how long the lake bed will remain
closed.  Moreover, there is a possibility that it will receive more rain in
the near future.  In light of this, I recommend that you think about a
possible cut-off date for your members as many of them are coming from
quite a distance.  If El Mirage does not dry out within the next 21 days,
we will honor any date in the future that does not conflict with a
grandfathered event.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel
free to contact me either through my email, or at my desk, I should be here
all week.  If you need anything else, please let me know.
Thanks,
Tim
