93+ octane pump gas in Wendover?
« on: July 27, 2010, 02:08:11 PM »
I'm going to be running the 130 club (again) in September, and was wondering if anyone knows if 93+ octane pump gas can be found in Wendover?

I'm pretty sure the Chevron station has 93 octane premium grade gas.

You can always get a little regular unleaded and mix it with some ERC 100 octane unleaded....

Actually you may do better using ERC MULA... the 100 octane oxygenated unleaded... available on the salt

There is a sinclair station on the Utah side of Wendover they have good octane due to the 10% ethanol.  I would be carefull of oxygenated fuel, you would surely want to run it low
RPMs', and then check your plugs for heat.  I remember a few years back a motorcycle guy turned his heads into sacrifices to the gods of speed with oxygenated fuel. :-o

We ran  MULA in the 1000, no issues, ran quite a bit better than with the 110K leaded.  Of course we were not using the stock tune because the motor was sightly modified from stock.  You won't have a detonation problem with Mula.

For what it's worth:  Don't I remember that last year Rick Gold did NOT have MUL-A but instead the "newer" MUL-B?  I don't know what, if any, difference there is -- just thought I'd toss that little fact out there.

In answer to my own question -

I drove by every gas station on both sides of the strip in Wendover this morning, and they all had 91 as the top gas, no 93 in sight.

Had filled up with 93/10% in Twin Falls on our way in, and still had about 1/2 tank left. Not crazy about the 10% ethanol, but decided to run on it anyways. Put a 91 octane map into my ECU to be on the safe side, but fallback plan in case I couldn't make 130 was to add a few gallons of the ERC 100 and then run a 93 octane map.

Didn't need to worry. Ran a 134.43 on my first run, even though I was taking it easy on the engine, shifting 1000 rpm below redline. Didn't want a repeat of last year (two busted rods). Backed it up with a 134.48.

My dad ran the car this afternoon, and got a 133 and a 131 (bogged start), same gas and map. Oddly, though, there is now much less than 1/2 a tank left in the car.

Remember racers, at 4200 plus feet your NA motor don't have the compression ratio it had at lower altitudes (DA, ya know) and you may not NEED the octane.

I could bore you with a drag racing story about running at Bandimere (Denver) but I won't.

Sure, but a WRX is turbo'd. Extra octane doesn't hurt, but not enough can be costly.

What turbo, intercooler setup and what typical peak boost are you running?

At max boost of 18 psi on my 2002 WRX I needed to run 104 octane at 5800 ft altitude to avoid detonation while drag racing on the stock TD04 turbo and 2.0 L engine.  The WRX engine is not tolerant to detonation as some other engines are, I would err on the side of too much octane, go talk to Rick over at the ERC and get a fuel you know will protect your engine. Good fuel is very cheap insurance on that engine.

The Subaru ECU loves octane -- If you are running the stock ECU and tune, (or a reflash that retains the stock behavior) it is adaptive and will use all the octane you give it up to about 104 -108 octane.

Stock turbo, intercooler and all engine bits. Short intake and full exhaust are the only performance hardware on the car. For the ECU, I use an Accessport with off-the-shelf maps. Haven't a clue what the peak boost is.

Might have been able to go faster with more octane, and maybe icing the intercooler, but it was definitely fast enough to achieve the objective.
