Engine swap
« on: July 21, 2010, 09:03:38 PM »
Can someone point me in the right direction as to what constitutes an engine swap that would make a car illegal for the production class? I am thinking about trying to make it out to the salt for the 2013 season, and I am trying to work out what class I would run in.

A GM 572 crate engine would be a swap in your car.

You mean like the bumper guards and the right side rear-view mirror?

Has to be an engine that was availible and sold with that type of car for that year from that manufacture.  With atleast 500 of them made.

Atleast thats what I remember.

Or the air conditioning? :-D

Walt, what class you thinking?  You may have gone too far with the blocked off grill to go production, but that can always be fixed.  Do you have a SCTA rulebook?

Walt - Are you asking if the 1.9 is considered a swap in your Escort with respect to SCTA?  I seem to recall you also writing about a V6, which would make the Escort really jump.

2010 Rulebook, page 40
4.N   ENGINE SWAP:
An engine swap is defined as the use of an engine from an engine design family that was not available as a factory or dealer installed option for a given vehicle year is used.

An engine design family is defined as engines which are made with the same basic material, have the same bore centers, crankshaft supports, deck height, cam location, head mounting, bell-housing and engine mount patterns, etc. All OEM parts shall fit the block without modification.

The use of an OEM or aftermarket replacement engine block from the same design family is not considered a swap. “Crate engines” are not considered engine swaps. Direct replacement aftermarket engine blocks are not considered engine swaps (Dart, World Products, etc.) if they meet the above engine swap design definition criteria.

That should cover it.

Are you looking for a swap ???

If so, how about a 2.3T, as in this Tempo?

The 'basic' mechanics of the swap seem relatively straightforward:

"The Tempo transmission bolts right up to the 2.3T block. You have to use a 2.3T flywheel that is drilled for a tempo clutch. The car was gutted and weighed 2500lbs without driver. My best pass was 12.00 122mph with a best 1.96 60ft.Very fun car,but after 300 FWHP it ate clutches fast.I went through every clutch that spec could build me.The small 7.5" clutch could not handle the load.So I called it quits and the motor ended up in my Datsun which now belongs to Bo (bo-port.com)."

Dunno how it would work in the Escort, though.

If you decide to put a turbo'ed 2.3 in the Escort, just let me know Walt. I have a little bit of experience with these motors as I'm running one in an old 1978 Pinto wagon. Fun swap, but it made me realize how much I hate soldering! Think I still might have one of the long blocks sitting over at a friends house, no room in a two bedroom apartment for all of my stuff. Think if the engine is still there, I would have a wiring harness and everything for the swap. Will have to check on that for you.
