The new Costella/Cunha J streamliner

If you haven't looked thru the pics from the June El Mo meet it is worth while to look at the picture of the new No. 8080 JGSL from Costello/Cunha. Especially look at the amount of dust that is at the rear of the car. In my thinking the amount of dust behind the car is a pretty good measurement of its aero efficiency. The smaller amount of dust the more efficient the design. Looks to me that the 8080 car is ready to be rewriting some records in the 750 class!!

It will be interesting to see Jack's rear engine roadster.  If the other cars he has built are any indication, it should be very fast and interesting.  :evil:  Tony

They ran less than 1 mph from the El Mo record on their first time out so I am thinking they should be able to really smoke the record once they get the hang of it. Looking forward to see the car at the salt.

Very pretty, but it is pitch-unstable just like the one that blew over a couple of years ago.  All of that area out front and all of the weight in back is not a good idea.  I would recommend to anyone with any design to make a styrofoam model of their vehicle and weight it up to create a scaled CG.  Then throw it off the back of a pickup at 30 mph.  It will stabilize in the same orientation that the real thing will seek when it gets out of shape on the salt.

Don't guess.  TEST!

Would a front engine, front wheeled drive long tailed tubular cross-section streamliner get a lot of records with a guarantee that it would never crash?
Are 80 records enough of a test?
I have a design on the drawingboard that has never set any records.
I think I will now go jump out of a pickup!

Attention, attention.  It has been brought to my attention that Jack Costella spells his name as I have a few words ago -- that is, ending with an "A".  The well-known "Costello" spelling refers to the guy that paired with Abbott.  Please adjust your posts accordingly -- if for no other reason than it's nice to spells folks' names right.

First my apologies to Jack for mis-spelling his name! It is Costella from now on! Regarding Jack's design philosophy, I may not completely agree with it, but as Jack said, it is pretty hard to argue with the results! And remember many of the records that were set by Jack's cars were by over 50 mph over the existing record!!! Also there are some other non Costella cars that follow Jacks flat bottom design that are going pretty fast, Potett and Main's 436 comes to mind.
