What happened to this streamliner?
« on: May 02, 2010, 11:51:50 PM »
Does anyone know if this streamliner still races at the salt flats? Burke bros - Cook -Hoyt? If so, who is the current owner? I don't recall seeing this car for awhile. When was the last time this streamliner saw the salt?

If anyone knows...

Is this the Dave Tuttle built car that went to Oz?

The streamliner was the Burke-Cagle car. It was driven by Mel Chastain in 1970 and crashed. The car was destroyed and never rebuilt. Mel Survived the crash.

From what they were telling me yesterday, this car was campaigned at least in the 80's. And maybe the 90's as well. The picture of the program was either '85 or '86 I think.

Your definite on the crash though? The poster remembers the car as a kid in the 80's tearing it up.

The liner did crash. We teamed up with Gordon Hoyt a few years after the crash and I ran that same motor in our Roadster. We started running with Hoyt about 90 or 91 so the crash was in the 85 to 89 time frame. They were running D/BF when the liner crashed. I believe Steve Burke was driving, the car rolled and then flipped up and over the mile board, clearing it by several feet.
Records or parts, I didn't come all this way not to break something.

Dallas is correct on the car running again. Steve was the driver the 2nd time it crashed. It was a pretty car.

Any possible theories on the cause of the crashes?  : too short, or lift in the back somehow?

I made corrections to my files on this issue. Sorry about the error on my part. I was not on the salt in 1970 when Mel crashed. Anyway Tiny is on top of it with his family connections to the Cooks and Burkes.
