fuel for thought or thinking about gas
« on: March 07, 2010, 10:22:11 AM »
Hi all,

Newbie here.

"Driving" my 67 GTO to the April meet for the HotRod challenge.
Thinking about what to do with the "pump gas" in my tank when i get there.
I take it I have to run the event gas. It looks like I will be by myself (no crew) so I
am limited to what equipment I can fit in the old goat; gas cans are bulky.
Also.. is there any camping on site?
 :-D

Yes, you're welcome to camp.  It's free, too, and there's rudimentary running water (a hydrant with a hose) and porta-potties on site.  I don't know the Hot Rod Top Speed rules about gasoline, but I expect someone here will chime in with his 3 cents' worth.

Fred,
Minimize the amount of gas in the tank when you arrive and buy event gas from the fuel vendor. He will seal your tank...if a protest arises, we can test your gas.

Ask Slim to bring a pump and donate the gas to the Landracing adventure. There you go Jon, an idea to save you money

Well, it's a kind thought, but we'll be driving the diesel pickup -- and running the fuel (nitrous) bike so will want a little more than pump gas in the tank.

But hey, I just remembered -- I think I'll have the Honda 1kw generator on the trailer to supply 110VAC.  It takes all of a quart or so an hour, but every little bit counts, right?

Fred,
Welcome to the site ... and the fun.

Regarding camping, keep in mind that the "rudimentary running water" is not potable,
so you will need to bring your own drinking water.

Second helpful hint, there are fire ants onsite, so be very careful where you pitch your tent.

From what I have seen . Don't walk in the grass . Don't park on the grass' don't camp on the grass. If there is no cement under your feet . Get some  and start brushing off your legs and stomping you feet.  Seriously they win . :-o

The cement is a cover for them in wet/cold weather.

Racer X ain't kidding. All I brought home from one meet was great memories and a truck/camper infested with ants from just parking in the wrong place right before I left.
The folks you'll meet and the time you'll have would be worth braving bears though.

Obviously the ECTA needs to charge an extra admission, a 1 lb container of Amdro per camper.  Spread it where you camp...  8-)

I have camped three times at Maxton.  Pitched the tent in the grass every time.  Never had a problem with fire ants.  But after spending basic training in GA, I tend to know what to look for when finding a spot for the tent.  :)

I agree with Joel, we've been there many years and camped in the beginning. If you pay attention to what you're doing then there's no problem. I think I've been bit once in the last 10 years?

I've camped a bunch of times, actually prefer it -like being at the track early, never had an issue.  Of course, I camp in my motorcycle trailer.
