lakebed closures - what about the rest of El Mirage
« on: February 19, 2010, 11:15:44 PM »
I was thinking about riding some non Hayabusa powered dirt bikes at El Mirage.  Is the rest of it open even if the lakebed is closed for mud?

Sounds like a wasted trip to ride if your going to ride there.  There are much better places to ride dirt bikes than El Mirage.

even if the lake bed is closed the rest of Elmo is open for riding.
i will agree with bvillercr there really are better places to ride
dirt bikes then Elmo. give jawbone or redrock a try both great
places to ride and there is no charge to ride at ether one.

Good input.  The plan was to race at the Mojave Mile and then Saturday night head to the desert and camp, ride dirt bikes a bit, and ride a little Sunday before heading back to Sacramento.

Anything "close" to Mojave Airport that fills that dirt bike bill?

Hey Bvillercr, your Ist trip to the desert [about 1yr old] was El Mirage just to the right of the main entrance a mile or two at the
base of the mountains. My 1st Hare and Hound.
But as you say there our better places to ride Jawbone canyon [verify on map] is about 30 miles from Mojave and Red Rock about
10 more. I would go to Red Rock as they have a campground and a ranger station with info where you can ride. We use to start a race in Dove Springs head to Jawbone race down a steep hill to the canyon floor and loop back to dove springs over to Horse Canyon
up the road into the pine trees and down the Socal hill [VERY STEEP and not sure you can go there anymore ] then race back to
Dove Springs, refuel and head out on the second loop.

                     Good luck JL222

You can get maps of the mojave area at most motorcycle shops.  They also have them at the jawbone ranger station.  Lots of places to ride as mentioned above, plus lots more near ridgecrest, johanesburg, spangler hills and more.  Like JL222 said there is camping at red rock canyon, that's a good start.

Come 45 miles NE to Randsburg, where I live, The dirt bike Capital. Old mining town welcomes dirt bikes. You can ride on on the streets here. Many places to camp and a lifetime of exploring!

there you go, a personal guide.  Can't get any better than that.  I've ridden all over that area, and if you don't know where your at you could be riding in restricted areas. All the areas I listed above are also pretty close to Randsburg.  A heavy duty skid plate is mandatory.  Don't pass on the invite you will regret it.  Have fun. :-D

I had another friend at work tell me to go to Randsburg.  He said they used to ride right into town to a burger joint and he loved it.

How far from Mojave airport is that?  That or Jawbone sounds great.  I think the race wraps up about 5pm Saturday.  My hope was to drive somewhere within say an hour and camp (maybe get in a quick dusk ride) and get up the next morning and ride half a day.
