Bike P-PP Class and Carbs
« on: December 18, 2009, 01:03:57 PM »
This may be old but I can't seem to find any discussion to guide me.

I run an Italian bike in P-PP class. The carbs are 30mm Dellortos. The specific model of carb is VHB30 or "square slides." Dellorto hasn't made these carbs in over 20 years.  I am having difficulties getting good, unmolested VHB30 bodies.

The PHF30 or "round slides" carb is the replacement for VHB30. per Dellorto UK "...the PHF was fitted on the later big V twin Guzzis, they stopped making the VHb in around 1980."

I would prefer to use PHF's as I can get all parts in pristine condition.

How do I go about getting a ruling on this? Since the square carbs are no longer available and the round carbs are what the manufacturer makes for this application, can I use the PHF30's in place of the VHB30's?

Thanks for any infos,

Alex

I am not a bike guy

but I think you will be "ruled" by "must appear identical" and "Any performance modifications shall be out of view."

IE if anyone can tell the difference by looking compared to a show room bike you will be subject to protest at the least in my opinion.

In the meantime -- Mike Rich, of Mike Rich Motorsports near Scranton, Pennsylvania, specialises in Moto Guzzi bikes and might be able to help you with finding parts.  He has helped with Tom Liberatore's Goose -- which has set records at the Salt as recently as last summer.  For that matter -- you might contact Tom (no, I don't have information and he's not a regular on this Forum) and ask if he can help your search.

And back to the specific question -- you're best off if you ask and get a response from Tom Evans, chair of the Motorcycle Technical committee, or Van Butler, head motorcycle inspector.  I think they're both identified (and contact information given) in the rulebook.

Alex, production is identical to factory produced appearance...
If they look the same on the outside you are OK, if not better run Modified or pick a bike that you can return to identical to factory appearance.
If you don't have a rule book you better get one, read the section 10 times, think about it and read it again.
