Thrust driven bikes at El Mirage
« on: December 09, 2009, 08:29:55 PM »
Just killing some time in the office waiting for the traffic to die down...thought of a question I've been meaning to ask.

Why no thrust vehicles at El Mirage.  Is it that the course is too short?

I'm going to guess -- and it's just that - a guess.  The blast from a thrust engine would create a dangerous condition for anyone behind (or even nearly behind) it -- from flying debris, dust, heat, fumes, and so on.  They don't have those thrust deflectors here and there around airports just for decorations. . .

SCTA  does not allow or run thrust vehicles of any kind.

What about Bonneville (I know, I should read the rule book)?

There was a major shift in the 60's when the thrust LSR cars showed up. All of a sudden traction and horsepower meant nothing. All of the thrust vehicles have had nothing to do with piston driven records.

Cool to look at and 1000 mph is bat sh#t crazy, but has very little to do with us.

The piston record in the 60's was 400 and hasn't changed much since then. Several hundred levels of more complicated than sticking a rocket out the back.

I don't think any functional reason exists, only that our sport doesn't want them.
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.

Especially since it would be blowing in the wrong direction.

If you've never seen one of the jet cars at the dragstrip, I can say that safety is a serious concern, as would be damaging a soft track like dirt or salt.  Little pieces of track would be thrown hundreds of feet backwards.
I've seen one knock down a chain link fence on a part throttle license pass.  Love the roar though.

oh no, I feel a spam onslaught coming on....with indignant quotes from magazine articles from 1963, with no analysis, ......I sooner walk down the main st of Mecca in a bacon suit than mention thrust power where HE can see it...

:?  Maybe I should have let sleeping dogs lie...I was just interested in bringing a toy out to play.

So I guess the only option would be to run a thrust powered bike at Bonneville, like Mike Charlton.

Sorry Daks , that probably didn't make a great deal of sense to you. There is a "land speed racing fan"and self appointed historian ( and there is no more appropriate word than "fan") who has a long interest in thrust power and has got himself banned from here several times. He runs a long email list that's kind of like a travelling fight show, . It can be a little bit of fun to get those emails but he doesn't understand the BCC thing so once he has your email so does every spammer in the world....

Good luck with the jet bike, they're tolerated but not necessarily loved 'round here.

That would be at Mike Cook's Top Speed Shootout. Was it $5,000 for Mike Charlton to run?

Thanks Dr Goggles,

The bikes' been in storage for 15 years so I guess a few more years wont' hurt anything. Thanks for the heads up too..
