maxton bike build questions.
« on: December 02, 2009, 09:02:11 PM »
hello everyone! RUNT here. [FNG]

i am in the planning stages of a bike build to run at maxton. what i have is a kosman bt 18 drag bike chassis, set up for a xl / sportster powerplant. i have a oem buell set of rims and front end from a xb12r. so i can run the right tires.

my first [of many] questions is, being this chassis is a rigid rear susp. am i going in the right direction, or should i go for a chassis with front and rear susp? so far all the drag racers i know say, work with what you have, its a good chassis and there should be no problems. i personaly feel its a great start. but since i have never run LSR i would like some input, any and all info welcome

RUNT
who would have guessed it would take so long to go so fast for such a short time?

First place to start is . Do you have a rule book?
A lot of rigid bikes run at Maxton. But the track is not smooth.
Thank you to all the volunteers

I suggest you contact Todd Dross at Twin Jugs.  He knows bikes both drag and LSR, and he is a tech inspector and racer at Maxton . . . .

1st purchase is a rule book, its on my x-mas list! i have a few that are way to old to go by!

yes, the track is a concern of mine, when i worked for dan jesel, i remember his brother wayne saying the track was not smooth. even saw a picture of the left rear wheel oF the truck off the pavement while under power.

i will contact mr. dross, when i get back from deer hunting next week.

thanks RUNT

Welcome Runt. You have an incredible number of people/ experience to draw from. The Sporty/Buells are close to second to the Hayabusa as the most popular motorcycle at Maxton though there don't seem to have been quite as many this past year. Joe Daly over on Long Island has a really nice one And Walt Kudron right there in Jersey knows as much about going fast on a bike as anybody.Bring it down and wring it out.

I am building a rigid Truett and Osborn drag frame with an XL engine for next year ... Aaron Wilson has a similar machine that he runs at Bonneville and feels there is no problem with no rear suspension ... I have run a really hard suspension sit up Buell powered bike at 150 mph and there is no problem with the surface. I dont feel it will be a problem rigid ... PM if I can help you ...

Gee when I saw that I thought it meant "frenetic" or "frustrated" but by the wording of the post, must have been "friendly"    :-D

Then again i'm just another Jersey guy, it's the air & water up here.    :?

Todd Dross is on the road this weekend -- going to visit his parents.  Don't expect much back from him for a couple of days.

As for build diaries -- nah, go ahead and put your build on the thread called build diaries even if it's in the "Bonneville" section.  We've got plenty of topics already.  Charles is building his Stude for both Maxton and Bville, and the Vicky for Maxton (last year) and his diary is mixed in with the rest.  You might as well, too.

August is a busy time for land speed racers -- with both SpeedWeek and Bub's during the month.  You might not find too many folks that want to help out with an East Coast event during that month.

Runt,,

Like SSS said,,, we post all builds in the Build Diary section under Bonneville.....So get you camera out and start posting pics and play by play narratives.... It's fun to share your builds and project.... But just an FYI...there is a wealth of knowledge and experience on here,,, but every now and then you may be challenged on a idea or concept,,, many times it is with your best interest and safety in mind, or to comply with you chosen class rules,,, just don't have thin skin,,,, IT is FUN...

Now I do have a lot of fun at the track and really enjoy driving,,,, but hanging out on here, sharing my build and enjoying the LSR people is FUN as well,,, So GET THE DIARY STARTED..

Also  the Car folks and Bike folks do work together and get along,,, no divide here,,,just a GREAT group.
