Is there any consideration to adding the  BSI 6658 Type A (European Saftey Certification) to the hemet Requirements?

Is there any consideration to adding the  BSI 6658 Type A (European Safety Certification) to the helmet Requirements?

Are you asking to add that spec as a more restrictive requirement ?  or to add that spec as another acceptable certification  "an additional choice"  ?

Most good helmet manufactures helmets pass both the BSI standard as well as the Snell standard. There are good and bad points on both standards but if you look and compare the testing charts on both, the Snell standard passes the worst case scenario better.  In our sport the speeds would seem to dictate to be prepared for the worst-case scenario.  Just my two cents.  Tony

To respond directly to your question -- you'll have to ask either Joe Timney or Kieth Turk to learn whether they are considering any changes in the rules for helmet certifications.  Joe and Kieth are the president and racer director, respectively, of the ECTA - and they would have the information or could steer you to the person that is, if there is such a person, doing research on the certification.

When does the Snell 2005 or later rating take effect? 2010 or 2011?

Jan 1 2011

However, if you are running a car or M/C streamliner using a M2000 or M2005, you need to put a SA2005 (not sure when the SA2010's come out?) on your Christmas list now.

Thanks McRat. That gives me another year to see who else comes out with the M2010 models at what I hope are lower prices - yeah I know, dress for the brain you want, not the brain you have.

Can't predict future rules, but normal accepted life for a SNELL is 10 years max, in most race orgs.

What puzzles me is why the SA rule kicked in a year early.  This will have some folk buy SA2005's today, and they will expire after 2015, whereas if they gave a year grace, you'd buy a 2010, and be good to 2020.

I will get to asking Joe and Keith, just thought someone might have an idea.

I would think it woluld be an additional acceptable certification.

As I understand it, helmet manufacturers have to Pay for Snell Approval....some time ago, DOT certification was more stringent than snell ( this was prior to Snell2000) but I can't put a date on it.....

From my reading the Euro standards are quite strict although I have not gotten into them enough to compare the two.

On the age out.  I thought the helmets aged out time from manufacture date....don't have the rule book in front of me but I thought that is the way it was.......which brings into play losing helmet usefull life when buing a last year model.....despite it being a new helmet

There are questions in this thread about what year the 2005 helmet is to be required. Below is the wording from the 2010 rulebook:

3.A.2   Driver’s Helmet:
All drivers/riders shall wear a full-face helmet with face shield. A Snell Foundation tag reading SA2000 or M2000 or later is required. Snell Foundation 2005 Certification will be required on all helmets beginning on January 1, 2011. No open face helmets will be allowed. Helmets will be visually inspected at least once each year. Helmets shall be undamaged and in serviceable condition. Eyeglasses worn under the helmet shall be shatterproof. All cars and motorcycle streamliners require SA rated helmets.

As you can see from the bold print that the 2005 helmets are required in 2011. That will give those with 2000 helmets one more year. The 2010 helmet spec is due to be released in late 2009 or early 2010.

ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE that they're not allowing Snell 2010 helmets in 2011!!!

So all of us who want to buy a new helmet for 2010 have to buy a helmet that meets a 5 year old standard. We can't buy the latest and greatest. If we do, we can only use it in 2010, because it'll be illegal in 2011.

What kind of -------- ------- make up these rules anyway?

VeeTwin,,,,

PJ is correct..  2010 is "later" ,, so you can use a Snell 2010  whenever you get it,,,

I have an SA2005, ( I will continue use it when I run the Vicky), I need to buy a new Helmet with the accommodations for the air circulation system, so I will wait and get a new 2010 in the next few months to use in the Stude.

(not sure when the SA2010's come out?)

I have check with several supplires and manf. and I was told that they will be available in the fall of 2010---I will not do the cage on the new car untill I have a new helment
