Mike -

Neat parlor trick.

I wouldn't want to try it on a Corvair, though.

Labor and Industries would love that one.  They might put it in their tranning videos of what not to do.
 Pretty cool though.

DRAG RACING A BEETLE!  You can gain up to 10 HP by dropping the belt, you pull up to the line then someone drops the belt for you. 10HP doesn't sound like much, but when you make less than 50 (stock), it's a huge increase. Some of the more adventurous guys have adapted the electric clutch off of a AC compressor to eliminate the need for it and to keep their fingers!

Over the summer while in college I worked at a VW dealer.  This trick was passed down from old mechanic to new apprentice.  Had to make sure the shop steward was not there when teaching.  Some mishaps occurred but no big injury.  Mostly something made a bang followed by scurrying and laughter.

I remember small wedge shaped things to use for this purpose on any car.  JC Whitney?

And if you go back far enough... to get a steam locomotive back on the track you used wedge shaped devices to drive back on.  Perhaps Glen knows?

If you worked in the 1800's you got very up close and personal with live belt changes.

You built your factory next to a river and the water wheel drove a central shaft through the building.

Turn the machine on? Hook a belt. Turn if off? Hook a belt. Change speeds? Hook a belt.

Trip and fall? Flap, flap, flap. Oops! Hire a new guy.
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

I don't doubt it.  I mentioned "Corvair" earlier in this thread (I've owned two), and both times that the fanbelt broke, it was like someone kicked that thing right in the arse.  Of course, the Corvair was also turning a big cooling fan, and the fun only lasted until you overheated.

Watch it? I say we film it. On second thought, I`m kind of squeamish
