VINTAGE MOTORCYCLE TRANSMISSION
« on: November 16, 2009, 06:58:04 PM »
hello-i have searched on the forum and scoured the 09 black book-

i can,t find any suitable info-

i have an early pushrod motorcycle engine-i have no transmission-can i use one from a later bike, say an after market harley type and be legitimate for records ?-

i saw a few vintage bikes competing this year at bonneville, but the guys and girls i spoke to were not in the know, and the inspectors were always very busy when we spent time with them,[mainly drinking beer]

In England there are at least three classic bike magazines who list owner's clubs for about every type of bike made.  These folks are a wealth of info about what fits and what doesn't, where to get it, etc.  Almost always they will help if asked.

production has to be stock from the outside with a couple of exceptions---modefied doesnt mention the transmission although it lists the lights-instruments-fenders-gas & oil tank-seat-forks-swing arm-brakes & wheels as optional it doesnt mention the transmission ---- and A you can run any transmission that you want ---sidecar and streamliner you can run any transmission---you can call the chief motorcycle inspector and ask him his number is in your black book page 168                      willie buhta

willie-i can see that in vintage something that would give you a competative edge that was from a later era could be illegal-and i would agree, say a modern hybrid turbo or two on a big old knuckle head-or chief-but a transmission merely transfers the power the vintage engine is making...so i will check it with tom-or todd, they drank most of our beer so they must be the most enlightened...

thanks willie-

just talked to tom evens and he said you have to run the stock trans in production but other than that you can run whatever trans you want                                               willie buchta

i think that if i were going to run in modified i would e-mail the scta and have them send me a response in writing just to be on the safe side
