4-Wheel Independent Suspenion With Air Bags?
« on: November 15, 2009, 01:34:29 PM »
I have a Lincoln that I'd like to run at Bonneville.  It has factory 4 wheel independent suspenion with air bags.  Would it be wise to replace the rear axle with a solid 8.8 or 9" and use coil springs instead of the air bags?  I plan on using this car for USFRA's 130MPH and 150MPH clubs and then going to SCTA's D/PRO class with it, which has a 226MPH record.  Maybe go for a FIA record too.

Justin -

It doesn't appear that you can change out to a solid rear in Production.

GT lets you do it, and it's my understanding that this modification was permitted in the 1960's to accommodate Corvettes and XKE's.

If that was indeed the intent of the rule when it was adopted in the '60's, you might have a solid argument for a rule change, seeing as so many more production vehicles have independent rear suspension today, but as the rule reads now, I doubt if Production would permit it.
