Ellwoods Crankcase Supercharged bikes
« on: November 13, 2009, 04:44:26 PM »
My bikes are not streamlined land speed style bikes, but I race on the flying kilometer on ice here in Sweden ( class 3B). The black bike is a 500cc adapted Godden speedway engine, with double reed valve inlets into the crankcase. The single reedvalve outlet goes up the silver pipe, which gives a nice flow      ( but really ought to be an intercooler), all around the saddle, then through the throttlebody with indirect injection. The spikey tyres slow the speeds down by 20%, but its fun anyway.
2009 record 111.34 kmh (69 mph)
2010 record 151.14 kmh (94 mph)

Flying Kilometer View 2010 (by Photo4Fun)

2010 clipons have replaced straightbars, and static compression raised to 14:1 The goal for 2011 is 200 kmh = 125 mph

2010 exhaust rewelded, and new cam chain fitted

I`m building a 1300cc version, but its becoming a long term project. Its got triple reed valve inlets, and one reed outlet leading via boost tank inbuilt in seat unit up to the intercooler, then to throttlebody with indirect injection leading to a rotary cross valve. The boost pressure is low. The engine can run on most fuels, but runs best on methanol.

I'm not sure how any of that works -- but WOW!

Hi Stan, you can see some pretty good explanation how it works from the Kneesliders site.

Reed valve crankcase boosted 4 stroke rotary valve engine LSR project. WOW That's exiting! I'd like to know more about your project and the engine. If you could lift this topic with some updates and tech, it sure will raise interest! How do you lube the cylinder for instance?

Hi Charlie101, the cylinder is lubricated by 2 stroke oil which is pumped into the crank.
If you zoom to the the top of this page you see my website link on crankcase supercharging.

Congratulations, a friend and I have looked at making a KTM motor in the same way.  The most recent production version of that idea is at this link:  http://www.shindaiwa.com/usa/en/technology_2/c4/index.php
They also have an animation better explaining the process, cool stuff.

This company makes leaf blowers and other small gas engined portable tools. There is a patent on an airplane drone motor using the same system for more horsepower and less fuel usage than a normal 2 stroke motor.  Husqvarna made a 4 stroke out of their 2 stroke bottom end in the 70's (if memory serves correctly), but did not add the idea of running the intake through the crankcase......who knew?
Always fun to see really different ideas crop up in motor designs!
Beautiful workmanship!

In the late '50s & early "60s, the US Army used small drone aircraft that were manufactured by Fairchild & Radioplane. These had 4-cylinder 2-cycle air- cooled engines made by McCullough. These little engines were nicely made-- 72 horsepower and they weighed only 72 lbs. They used "Schnurle" cylinder scavenging and compressed the air/fuel/oil in the crankcase. I never heard it referred to as "supercharging", but then again, I'm no 2-stroke guy.

The whole ice things sounds plain crazy- therefore I love It!

That surely is an unique way to supercharge one, at least a way I haven't seen before. Great build, and would love to see more!
With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine. However, this is not necessarily a good idea. It is hard to be sure where they are going to land, and it could be dangerous sitting under them as they fly overhead. -- RFC 1925

Hi, ive just printed a few new books on this crankcase supercharging, exactly how it works and how to adapt/build such an engine. let me know if anyone is interested.

Here is my new landracer rocket sled with a big gas bottle and 150 Bar pressure.  also my old Tranny van still holds the record on ice in its class
