International LSR Truck?
« on: November 04, 2009, 09:27:43 PM »
I am trying to remember something from the days of when I was 8 years old or something. I remember seeing in "Truckin'" magazine an International 4900 shape land speed racing truck. Story was (I think it was on the salt) that it blew a tire and it was totalled, iirc. If anyone has any information on this truck, please let me know. It's for a project I'm doing for school.

The only International I can think of is The Phoenix.....
And it stills exists AFAIK.

It was the Endover (SP) The truck blew a tire and the fiberglass semi streamlined body exploded and the truck spun as I recall. Somewhere I have some photos of it when it happened. I will take a look when I have a chance in the next few days. The Truck did not crash but it was never rebuilt or brought back to the salt. I'll see what I have in my files.

yes Glen, that is also my memory... the Endeavor had a full streamlined body until it spun, then the body was everywhere.... Don't know what kind of truck it was.

They rebuilt the truck and the body work - but they never run the truck again.

The truck is today in Auburn/Indiana - not in the Cord/Auburn/Duesenberg museum - but on the same place is left of the C/A/D museum building the old facility entrance from C/A/D - and there is another car collection. This museum is run by a small group of people which gave other people a chance to display there toys....also owner can take there car/bike there if they like to sell them.

I remember it as being a lot smaller than the Phoenix and after seeing it at that International website my memory is confirmed. Watching two entirly different ideas for speed confirms why I enjoy LSR..JD

It was from Spokane Washington, and a diesel shop built it. McComb Diesel i think was their name.  When it spun it peeled just like a banana going two hundred miles an hour.  It was very good looking Truck IH.

Very cool pic!

I think somebody will eventually best the 272? mark set by the Phoenix by using a mini-truck with 500ci.  Once bulletproof pistons are figured out that is.  That will be the cheapest path to build a competitive vehicle.  An S10 with streamlining done will probably take about 1200HP to crest 270mph, and while that is currently possible with 400ci, the pistons do not live long enough at this time.

I knew I wasn't making it up! My memory is shockingly accurate, considering that I was only like 8 when this whole thing happened. It's pretty, for how ungainly those trucks are. Wonder what the cockpit looked like....
Slightly amusing that the third biggest logo on the truck is Goodyear... :|

I suppose EGTs are the issue with these trucks. I remember watching the pyrometer on my F-350 move as fast as the speedo under WOT. Peak/Warn gauges TOTALLY saved my motor about 20-30 times over the life of that truck.

I don't think any S-10 truck will leave the impression that the Phoenix left. The speed at 272  mph, pulling the 24' green chute and turning out in one mile was a show stopper. The pit fence was lined with the rail birds just like when the Burklands, Al Teague and Nolan White were making runs.
