How/where to get one of these forums
« on: November 03, 2009, 09:24:33 AM »
Hey, Slim,

Have the snows in Northern MI settled in enough to trap you for the Winter yet?  Makes me shiver just think about life in the "Uppper Half".  ('Course I've never been there so what do I know?)

A my co-driver, the lovely and talented Lady "Bearcat" Talbot, wants to set up a forum like this one for another group she is involved in.  Who does them?  How can I get some?  Where are they located?  Etc., etc., etc.

Thanks for any feedback you can give.

It hasn't just yet, but I have high hopes.

Thanks, Triple S,

Hope I'm not stepping on toes:

If you are willing to pay for software, you might check out vBulletin.  It is perhaps the most popular and stable.  IIRC, it's under $200.
An example of the software on a site would be http://www.duramaxdiesels.com/forum/index.php .  That is the 3.8.x version, there is a 4.x version being released, but I'm always leary of new software versions.

Hi,

This is Bob the Web Elf.  I haven't had a lot of experience with the various forums out there, but I am impressed with this Simple Machines Forum.

I like it from a user standpoint (as a user on a Kawasaki Concours forum) and also from the admin standpoint here.

I'd be happy to share what I know.

When I setup this website years ago, I went thru about 4-5 different forums "programs". Some cost less then $50, some more then $200.

This Simple Machines Forums is about the best out there and cost is zero.... It is open source and the upgrades and additions are limitless... This is one of the most stable forums out there and In my mind can't be beat...

Open source programs seem to be beating the market when it comes to stable programs and tons of tech support fast when needed all for free, why pay lots of dollars for a unstable program with touchy and long tech support.... Open Source is the honest answer...
